Buyed a used Fender SRV custom 6 months ago for 1500 € (1700 dollars). In Italy it costs 2300 € new (2500 dollars) I know the ex owner, he never played it, he just collect guitars so it was brand new. Had do lower down couple of fretwire at 15/16 frets and adjust the nut saddle but it is well build. I love it, but I am not a great playet and my hands are small so I struggle a bit 😂! (I just play at home, no bands or gigs). But he's my favourite guitar player and I enjoy myself playin it, if I get used to the thick neck I guess I'll keep it forever. If I can play some if his songs it's also beacause of you, so thanks Anthony 😉

Exactly..I got into building my own guitars when I couldn't afford the price of a completed guitar. As such I built 15 to 20 guitars and sold them off complete and parts. In my experience you get a better return from the individual parts than a completed guitar.

One thing that makes a video like this useful to me is that as a lefty, there aren't nearly as many options out there as there are for right handers. Although there are certainly more to choose from than, say, 20 years ago many manufacturers limit their color choices to basic boring two color burst patterns and black or white. To get a wider variety of color choices, going custom build is often my only choice. You're certainly correct about the resale value of a partscaster build, it's not something that you're gonna make any money on, so take your time and research your options to ensure that you get everything you want in your build.

One of my favorite things about strats is how easy it is to mix-and-match and create your own “signature” model. My current strat is a patchwork of the stuff I like: Fiesta Red, rosewood fretboard, big CBS headstock, reverse-angle bridge pickup, shorter tremolo arm, and Gen4 noiseless.

Good job Anthony, I have been through the agony of this thought process a couple of times thinking I was really going to cut down the price. As you have proved here, that just isn't going to happen. Do this build if you want the sense of accomplishment that comes from building your own guitar and be happy. I have decided to rebuild an old strat style Peavey that I really liked before I took it apart. It's enough for me to have modded it with all the hardware I wanted.

I've built a couple of Strats from total scratch, and it was some serious fun. The first one took 14 months and it was totally worth it just for the knowledge and experience alone. (Re-dos and rethinks along the way are part of it.) The cost of making one from raw wood was $945. in 2001. I don't recommend this rout for someone not used to cutting wood. It was a ton of work that I could have put into learning to play better. No regrets, though.

I have bought parts and built four Strats and a tele. They cost me $900-$1200 case included. My problem is buying an off the shelf Strat that I liked everything about it. I like to pick the color, neck shape, pickups etc. I realize if they are sold you will take loss, unless you part it back out. I built mine with the intentions of never parting with them. Buying the parts, new or reliced, choosing the color the style of tremolo, brass block or not. Neck material, pickups, finish color etc, then putting it all together and setting it up is very rewarding to me.

Very informative! I have asked the local guitar tech to do vintage wiring and fix new pickups. It's taking forever since it's hollow body, and especially some items coming from oversea countries, it would be worse. It took 2 months for me to get new pickups, 3 months to get my wiring and pickup works done. Then that guitar tech probably missed changing capacitor to Russian PIO and insisted this wouldn't work (he seemed he never saw Russian PIO.. and obviously never tried after discussing he would do it) . So I asked another guitar tech to change the capacitor and nuts to TUSQ (It's gonna be bone when I called them up after a month for checking how things are going and mentioned TUSQ is out of stock for now - So I asked them to use bone nut.... ) Any variable can cause you trouble and more working time... Endless waiting side of all these work was the most stressful thing I have experienced... I don't want to do anything crazy because I am kind of sick of it, but.. I imagine my self doing this again in the future.. ha

Great article as always Anthony. Can i just add that if you are afraid of wiring and making a mistake. Then plug and play is the way to go. I used a system from Obsidian wire on my 'Frankencatser' IIm not a pro musician or a builder. At the time I wanted the best I could afford ( secretly dreaming of the SRV strat) . My starting point was a Squire Classic Strat ( € 200) then I put the obsidian wire package in and swapped out the pickups for some I bought on ebay. ( € 85) after lots of research. Your figure is about right for a higher end self build but I'm happy with mine except the neck. Thats the next upgrade. I eventually bought a 2012 SRV and it's everything I dreamed of but I often wonder why I bought it ? I mostly play my Frankencaster which to me sounds and feels way better ( except the neck. So if I wend down the neck replacement rout with Mighty might or Warmoth I'd have pretty much what I want. So Yes it is worth it in some cases. Looking forward to your next article. Keep up the good work mate.

If you assemble from parts you have the advantage of getting the exact neck profile and frets etc that you like and can customize it all to your taste. Overall costs are still less than a comparable Fender custom shop guitar for sure. If you find a competent tech who has put these together before you can pay to have it done and set up. The advantage is a very personal guitar. Resale? Its true to part it back out. But most people keep theirs because it is so personal.

I think going used is the way to go. Stainless frets aren’t required but they make the playability skyrocket. Everything Mojotone I’ve used has been great, especially the pots and pickups. I replaced my R9 Custombuckers with the Hot 59 Clone PAF’s. They were exactly what I wanted in a PAF style pickup. They put together an awesome amp kit too.

If you can buy a guitar that suits you, feel and tone buy it and spend your time playing. If you can't find one straight from the factory then consider buying something very close to what you want and then customize it by swapping out parts, pickups, neck, locking staggered tuners. I used Mexican parts, witch there is no difference when I do it myself because I did a hell of allot of custom work especially on the neck. Mainly sanding and filing the fretboard, making it really comfortable to play. But if I would’ve used American parts it would’ve cost me $1,132.00. That’s a hell of a savings! It's a satisfying exercise to build your own. Probably the longer you leave it the better though, to know what your preferences are, have time to learn setup skills and have bench marks guitars to copy playability. I built my first 2 guitars mainly because it was back in the day and there wasn't much around for left handers. I made the body, bought a neck and it's had 2 sets of pickups in 40 yrs. It was playable from the start but I was able to finesse it over time as I learned more. Would never sell it and its the guitar I'm most attached to for its personal history. It doesn't hurt that it's my favorite for tone as well.

I built an SRV strat recently from parts. In total spent close to the money I could’ve bought a stock SRV guitar for, but I could’ve been cheaper if I had a couple things in mind beforehand. American professional body, Planet Tone HSS loaded pickguard, Warmoth roasted flame maple neck, SRV profile Stainless steel 6105 frets 10 inch radius, dark rosewood fingerboard, 22 frets, Wudtone bridge, fender locking tuners, Graphtech saddles... Yeah it’s a killer guitar and has everything I picked, it’s more versatile, durable and suits me better than a stock guitar would

My build evolved over the course of months but I bought a fully loaded American body but ended up swapping out all the electronics and the entire trem unit (because I wanted a vintage 6 screw trem rather than a narrow two-point trem.) If I was doing it again I’d go with a unloaded Mexican/warmoth/wudtone body and it would’ve made the build cheaper by $600. But the other parts I took out can be used on other guitars.

I think the one thing you forgot to say about buying a new guitar is, you get a warranty. My 2010 MIM strat had the neck develop a twist, and Fender replaced it for free. Have I modified this strat? Yes, 1969 Fender cs hand wound and a reverse wound fat 50's in the middle, all CTS pots and a brass blocked tremolo. So my 600 dollar guitar became a 1100 guitar, that is only worth what a use MIM strat is worth. And then I picked up a SRV used strat for 900, that was so lightly used, I cut the old strings off to clean off the corrosion off the fret wire.
@druwk4 жыл бұрын
Having the guitar with everything you want, and prefer...it is MUCH easier, faster, and cheaper than buying a (good) Strat and modding the shit out of it! That said, you can buy used parts selectively, and put together a quality guitar. As noted, resale is not an option. If that’s your game then, definitely buy a real Fender. I love Warmoth, and my parts-caster is 100% Warmoth wood. I did a India Ink dye, and Tung oil finish on the body, pre loaded pick guard from Lindy Fralin (best decision) and quality bridge, tuners, etc. I would definitely go with roasted maple on the neck wood. If I were doing it again, I might get some used parts instead of getting new Warmoth (body only). New neck to specification is totally WORTH EVERY PENNY! Also, I reshaped my Warmoth boat neck to asymmetrical perfection with some sand paper(s). Wouldn’t have tried that if it was a “Fender” neck? All said and done with a pro setup...$1200-1350. Could shave a couple hundred bucks off (?), if we’re going to do it again?

My main goal is to have my dream specs all in one instrument and ultimate playability! I will never ever ever sell this guitar, even if I get some defects with the paint or anything, this instrument is for life and I will be soulbound to it! Probably the asymmetrical neck profile. He did a video on neck profile awhile back. It was the main thing he loved about the SRV Strat vs his other guitars. I have own quite a few Fender Strats... and played the SRV... JM Strat... and the EJ Strat. There was a HUGE difference in the neck profile of those guitars. I like the SRV the best by far. To me, the best thing about the SRV Strat is the neck profile. There are plenty of other things I do not care for... like having to take the neck off to make a truss rod adjustment.
