I bought a 1998 4Runner SR5 with 256,000 mi and after doing routine maintenance promptly drove it across country and lived out of the vehicle for about 10,000 mi and 5 months. My only unexpected event was a loose battery terminal. Most amazing vehicle I've ever owned and it is currently still running like a sewing machine with 309,000 miles. This may sound wild to some but if you have one of these 3rd gen 4Runners you know.

$4,000?! What planet are you living on? These are going for at least $10-15K! I’m currently looking at a ‘99 that has 218K miles for $16K. I can’t find any that are going for lower than $5K unless it’s a piece of junk.

Recently bought a '97 in that green color from a buddy for less than a grand. 281,000 miles and it has some frame rot, but gonna have some SafeTCaps welded in by a reputable shop. All other work I have been taking on myself. Just replaced the parking brake hardware yesterday. That was rusted up. Got all the parts to do the Tundra brake upgrade and Billstein Old Man Emu lift once the frame stuff is done. The list of maintenance is long, including new LBJs, rad and timing belt, but it's been fun so far. Figure I will be into it for about $7k once all the major stuff is done.

Best decision Ive made in my life so far, I picked up my ‘96 3rd Gen with 114K miles for $17k last year. Original motor, no accidents, brand new paint job, ridiculously clean interior and a binder full of receipts on what was done to it …and not to mention its a manual. The 3rd Gen was a better choice for me only bc there was nothing on the Market that seemed worth my while. The fact that it was a Manual SUV put me over the moon, theres nothing like it on the road now and since that its a Toyota my kids will be able to learn how to drive Manual one day! #SaveTheManuals #4Runner

Had a 99 limited 4wd in 2020 I got for dirt cheap, simply because it was all rotted away and a clunker. Engine ran good at 303k though. I have a vid of that high on my list. That was in MI. Picked up a 98 sr5 4wd from TN couple weeks ago. I'll be making a vid of that sometime. Better truck in every way including no rust. Retired the 09 tacoma, sold it to my grampa. Rocking the slow life right now with the 3.4. Low miles. 301k haha. 4500 for mine. Cleaned up nicely. It was out in the mountains/farms of TN.

I wonder if any one will comment on not buying a 3rd gen? I have had 2 base 1st gens before getting my 3rf gen and I do like them better but they are no longer cheap beaters (under 2k). The 3rd gens can still be had in good condition for cheap if you can do the maintenance (Suspension, tires, brakes, fluids, exhaust, radiator gaskets, etc.) I bought my 01 SR5 with 170k with clean paint and clean frame for 3500. I have had to do all the above maintenance plus new bumpers. Total money spent is under 6k for a take me anywhere rig that will go will beyond my ownership. Also 4th, 5th, and newer used prices are ridiculous.

You want to replace that radiator. Over time, they get old, coolant will find it's way into the trans fluid. I replaced mine then drained the trans fluid into a container that was transparent to see if I could see anything separate (the coolant will settle to the bottom if your radiator allowed cross contamination). I was lucky, it didn't happen on mine. I replaced the thermostat and added new fluid.

I've torn 3 cv boots. One on drivers side, two on passenger. They boots rub and eventually wear. There's a boot stretch mod that has been documented alot on the web. I haven't done it. The answer is yes. Don't think about it, just do it. Find 20 grand and buy a 96-02 4runner. The fact that they are selling on lots with 200k for almost 20 grand should tell you everything you need to know. The original MSRP was 30 grand 23+ years ago. You can never go wrong with Toyota!
