Nice to see a positive review of the X type. I've got a 2002 2.5 petrol AWD X -Type and I love it. I did a lot of research before I bought it which I think is a must before you buy any motor. I paid less than a grand for it 18 months ago and all I've had to replace is 1 worn tyre! I've probably been very lucky but there are bargains out there. For anyone wanting that feeling of luxury on a relatively low budget, I would highly recommend trying out an X-Type for size. You could do much worse!

Great video thanks Matt. My first Jag was an X Type 2.1 V6 and probably the most reliable car I've owned I loved it! I had mine for nearly 12 years and sold it with 195K on the clock - still going strong' only issues I had was a fuel pump and a couple of o2 sensors other than that just routine service items. Being a 2.1 it wasn't the quickest but a great long distance cruiser. The Mondeo jokes become very tedious particularly as the X Type only had about 20% Ford components mainly suspension and brakes. Why don't Audi's get the same stick as many share a lot of components with VW's and even Skoda's ?!!! I think there is an event at the British Motor Museum Gaydon this summer to celebrate the X Type's 20th anniversary - hoping to go although sadly no longer an owner!

As someone in his 60s, I would have been quite happy with a 3L awd back in the day. It looked like a smaller version of the XJ6/8 of the time. With a diesel, a retune would be first on the list. Ok, first retune I looked at boosts the engine from 96Kw to 128Kw, or 128 to 158 Hp. Torque from 330Nm to 380+. That would make it a lot more fun. I currently drive a c220cdi with 125Kw, and it is great at that level.

@thomasgray5406 Жыл бұрын
Why must it have an auto? I've got a mint 55 plate 2.0d SE, just 60K on the clock, one reason I avoided the 2.2d is that I don't like autos (or at least not that era which sap torque from what is already a modest output in diesel guise), apart from not wanting a dpf. I like the extra controllability of a manual. Overall, X Types aren't quite up there with Beamers and Audis of the same era but they aren't far behind.

I was talking about the X-Type with a petrol head mate the other day - and his thought was that you shouldn't think of it as a low rent Jag - but a top of the line Ford, with an almost unbreakable engine, and with the trim and styling done by Jaguar. Seen in that light it's a bit of a no brainer - especially if you see the prices they go for

My son had a 2004 or 2005 2.0d as his first car. A tatty one with starship mileage. But... He loved it. The sills were made of papier maché, hidden under odd plastic trims.... He got fabulous MPG and had few issues. He loved the retracting hook on the glovebox lid for takeaway food bags. Or handbags or whatever ... It was a Mondeo with a Transit motor, but it was not a bad car. And far better than anyone deserves for their first old smoker.

I have one, near identical but 2009. 2.2D sports. Didn't go looking for it, but saw the value and the seller was super keen to sell so I boughtit looking for a quick turnover. 3 years, one dead wallaby and 30,000km later I still own it and loving it.

Another decent car plagued by brand/badge snobbery. The same 'Mondeo with a Jag badge' was also thrown at the S-Type of course and still hung around with the XF. Personally, my Mondeo was one of the best cars I ever owned so to be compared with one is no bad thing is it.

My BRG '55 plate 2.2 Diesel Sport Estate still gets comments of how good it looks, and as I lend it out to whoever needs it, all users give glowing reports on its performance and especially handling. With 180K, and having only needed a starter motor, crankshaft damper, and 2 rear wheel bearings, it's been an ace car. It just won't die.

@@sandersson2813 I’ve been looking on autotrader and I do prefer the estate now. Don’t normally like estate versions of saloons.
@sandersson28133 жыл бұрын
@@automotivania I'm the opposite. I think that estates are usually always better looking than the saloon. For example the BMW 3/5, Audi A4/A6, Merc C class/E class, Volvo V60/V90 all look better as estate cars to me than they do as Saloons. Saloons have had their day I think. The XF also looks very good as an estate but do think as a saloon that's maybe the best looking one.
@automotivania3 жыл бұрын
@@sandersson2813 Fair enough, I agree practicality wise (and looks for CLA and SLA shooting brake and XF estate) but in my opinion the 3 series, s60 and s90 saloons are some of the best looking normal cars on the road. I do like the 3 series touring though, especially in M Sport trim and an RS6 and a E63 AMG.

I am on my 2nd X type. First was a 2.1 litre straight six petrol manual and we drove it to death, with assistance from my son, who actually killed it. Current is a 2.2 diesel auto (2008) with low mileage. When i was young. many years ago, i always lusted after a Jag and this for me was a bucket list car. I am now old and very happy with my purchase, especially in snow/ice when most sensible people ditch their BMW/Mercedes for the wife's Toyota/Nissan. It is the last Jag that actually looks like a Jag and I will drive it into the ground!

I just sold my XF to put my 17 year old X type estate back on the road. Apart from the sills and the usual shit you'd expect after leaving a car sat outside untouched for 4 years, it was pretty much solid. It's on 160,000 miles now, genuinely been the most reliable car I've owned, although things like the parking sensors have given up now.

I just exchanged a Mk (V Mondeo 2.0 Petrol for an X-Type 2.0D just like the one in the video and I am very happy with it, though the clutch took a bit of getting used to. I've wanted a Jag for a long time, since I was a child, but since becoming of age to drive I never got one as the XJs I wanted were and still are not really suitable for me to use as a daily, and I never really liked the X-type until recently, prefering the S-type but I'm glad I gave the X-type a chance as it is a very comfortable car and I find it very stylish.

very reluctant to part with my 2005 150k x type estate. Most reliable well built car ever had. Now the cheapest motor I've ever owned for running costs. Only reason might now part with it is that infotainment and kids are embarrassed their Dad is driving something that old on the school run. Could afford new, but if do, may keep the jag on.

I'm in the US, and bought a 2002 X-Type 2.5 new. We had it for 8 years and 180,000 miles. I would probably still have it but for a hillbilly that rear ended it and destroyed the car (with my daughter driving!). It had minimal troubles, we did have to replace the driveshaft, but when it was wrecked it still looked and drove like a brand new car. Haters gonna hate you when you drive a Jaaggg.

I've had my 2003 2.1 litre petrol sport x-type automatic since 2009. It's done 120,000 miles, and my biggest repair cost has been replacing the radiator. The engine runs so smooth that it feels like it's made of lube oil, and the suspension is as sure-footed as the South American jungle cat that gave the car its name. One night, I missed my exit off a motorway, and the next one was too far away as I was already running late. No car was in sight in my rear view mirror, and their was no railing visible on the slip road that I should have taken, so I slowed down to about 25 mph and drove up the steepish, rough, stone embankment to get on the slip road. The car's suspension took the climb effortlessly.

I had a 2 litre diesel estate model. A comfortable and economical car that I used to lug around a drum kit and p.a. to gigs as well as a daily commute to my “proper” job. I made a point of getting a low mileage example as I had read that past 100,000 miles the repair bills start mounting up. I got to 112k before my mechanic reported a list of issues (including that dual mass flywheel) that made it uneconomical to repair. I still love Jags and now drive an XF.

I had a 2005 Vanden Plas 3.0 AWD in champagne gold. This was when I lived in Austin, TX. It was a great card, and in the wet it could beat any 2WD car from the lights. It was comfortable, got loads of compliments and it was a real pleasure to drive. I put 20k miles on it and bought another Jaguar - a 2008 XJ8.... The only thing I wish jaguar had done was the rumored SVR. If they had put the 3.0 V6 supercharged engine in the X-type, it would have been an absolutely amazing car. The 247BHP 3.0 NA was just not quite quick enough. A 340BHP 3.0 SC would have been epic.... Sadly, as you say, they are falling into the hands of chavs or people who just buy on price and drive it into the ground. Even here in the US, there are very few good ones left.

I always wanted the estate version (wagon) since they were introduced. They were always a bit more than we could afford. But here in Atlanta, it was a unique choice in a land of Mercedes, BMW, and whatever look a like SUV every Buckhead housewife was racing the I 285 in. After the X type had aged a bit too much, I finally saw an ad for a fully loaded, white, gasoline powered wagon at a Cadillac dealer in Miami. It was around 20K, very low mileage, and I was drooling. I finally got my head on straight and reasoned a 15 year old Jag was not the way to go. I ended up buying a 2 year old, fully loaded VW Golf Alltrack. Every once in a while I regret never buying an X type, but then I remember how fast my VW can keep up with those Buckhead housewives on 285.

Good review, but I do have a couple of comments. I have had 2 x-types both 2.2 diesels. Fantastic engine! I have covered over 100K miles and 2 rusted pipe clips on the intercooler is the only failures I have had. Neither have I had any rust. I recently did a long journey mainly motorway with little in town driving and the Jag returned 58.5mpg. The model I have is 58 Reg, Saloon Sovereign 2.2D Manual. If you are looking to buy one then either the XS or Sovereign will give you the best spec and experience

I had a 2.0D Estate for about 2 years. It smoked badly when I kicked down and the local Jaguar dealership couldn't fix that. The driving experience was similar to going in a lift; it was so boring, I couldn't wait to end any long journey.
