Usually I do. No need today, I just looked at a 2009 sport 2.2 diesel auto, as I am in the market for a mid size, economical, comfortable sedan/wagon on a limited budget, to do regular long trips in and hadn't considered an X Type before. Great timing for this video, but now I'm a little concerned about the diesel reliability and rear seat room/access. P.S I'll probably just end up getting a VW Passat.

Lovely car. I bought a 2.1 V6 17 years ago and still run it. Had a Mondeo before, worked for Ford at the time and got a good deal on this new Jag. They both drive well, but you feel you're in the Jag and on the Ford. Funnily watching this review has made me appreciate just how good a car it is. Mine's held out well at 140K but a bit of sill and rear axle rust on the advisories last MoT. 24MPG around town FML. Ulez compliant though, which is a major purchase consideration for us in and around London. Love this channel, thanks for all you do!

Good to hear from a likewise owner of a 2.1ltr X type. You are one of lucky ones who got the most practical model. Too many people go for speed and performance, thanks to "Top Gear" This car Could have been a better car with a 2.5ltr 4 cylinder engine. But the buyer wanted the V 6 and the result was they got a over cramped engine bay.

Must admit I was surprised to see it was a manual but then heard your comment that "Jags should be automatic"! Totally agree. When I was growing up, my Dad always had a mk2, & he always went for the automatic. Having said that, the car looks to be in good nick for a 59 reg.

It was the first and only manual jaguar ever produced, I assume that the UK got a lot more manuals than the US, they are so hard to find. I have been looking for a 3.0 X type sport five-speed for years just like the one I had back in the day and I’ve only found several 2.5 L manuals, it wasn’t the best clutch but it was much more reliable than the automatic, and the 0 to 60 time with a 3.0 manual was under seven seconds where the automatic was like 7.5.

Hi just watched your video about dealing with the public (well some of them)and it reminded me of when I had my hackney carriage business and brought back some FOND memories. ....like the one that on the meter the fare said £3.10 and before I could say just call it £3 he said to me "you'll be okay with £3",I hate it when people say that.I calmly replied that if he did not want to pay the metered fare then to keep his money and that I would see him in court because the minute they refuse to pay they have committed a crime of theft and I had the full backing of the law, this went on for about 15 min when he then produced £5 and told me to keep the change!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what a muppet anyway enjoying your vids and you seem to get a nice variation of stock.......oh and can I bid you £1000 less with full warranty, tank of fuel, lifetime guarantee on any car lol 😂😁😆

Nice to see a positive review of the X type. I've got a 2002 2.5 petrol AWD X -Type and I love it. I did a lot of research before I bought it which I think is a must before you buy any motor. I paid less than a grand for it 18 months ago and all I've had to replace is 1 worn tyre! I've probably been very lucky but there are bargains out there. For anyone wanting that feeling of luxury on a relatively low budget, I would highly recommend trying out an X-Type for size. You could do much worse!

Great video thanks Matt. My first Jag was an X Type 2.1 V6 and probably the most reliable car I've owned I loved it! I had mine for nearly 12 years and sold it with 195K on the clock - still going strong' only issues I had was a fuel pump and a couple of o2 sensors other than that just routine service items. Being a 2.1 it wasn't the quickest but a great long distance cruiser. The Mondeo jokes become very tedious particularly as the X Type only had about 20% Ford components mainly suspension and brakes. Why don't Audi's get the same stick as many share a lot of components with VW's and even Skoda's ?!!! I think there is an event at the British Motor Museum Gaydon this summer to celebrate the X Type's 20th anniversary - hoping to go although sadly no longer an owner!

As someone in his 60s, I would have been quite happy with a 3L awd back in the day. It looked like a smaller version of the XJ6/8 of the time. With a diesel, a retune would be first on the list. Ok, first retune I looked at boosts the engine from 96Kw to 128Kw, or 128 to 158 Hp. Torque from 330Nm to 380+. That would make it a lot more fun. I currently drive a c220cdi with 125Kw, and it is great at that level.

Why must it have an auto? I've got a mint 55 plate 2.0d SE, just 60K on the clock, one reason I avoided the 2.2d is that I don't like autos (or at least not that era which sap torque from what is already a modest output in diesel guise), apart from not wanting a dpf. I like the extra controllability of a manual. Overall, X Types aren't quite up there with Beamers and Audis of the same era but they aren't far behind.

The new logo & colour scheme look great. Also I've always appreciated the X type but the only thing about it is that if you want the full and proper Jag experience, you need to have the auto with the V6. If you drive a manual with a diesel engine, you may as well be driving the Mondeo.

I liked the cars being produced by Jaguar in this period, Ford did a lot of work on product quality and reliability. Unfortunately, for one reason or another, the new look Jaguars (XF onwards) have never sold as well and JLR have fallen on hard times. I've always wondered if Ford realised they made an error by changing design direction because just a couple of years later they sold to Tata? Luckily Land Rover have been more successful. 🙂

Derek fitted himself! Lol, that is too true in the place I live and the sort of people who park these old rough Jaguars on double yellows, while they pop into the chippy! 😅 I think they are nice cars. Any A4 is just a Volkswagen with an Audi badge and people buy those in mass. Only thing that let's it down is the Ford diesel. Even for the time it was noisey. A Jaguar should not be mistaken for a Transit! 😄

Both are great cars, back in that time I was just hitting my senior year of high school and I was working hard and I bought a X type 3.0 sport five speed, with the Aruba 18 inch rims it was so unique, but you had a lot of choices back then, and both the three series and the B6 Audi A4 were beautiful, I think that the A4 aged the best but they are all great looking cars to this day.

I was talking about the X-Type with a petrol head mate the other day - and his thought was that you shouldn't think of it as a low rent Jag - but a top of the line Ford, with an almost unbreakable engine, and with the trim and styling done by Jaguar. Seen in that light it's a bit of a no brainer - especially if you see the prices they go for

@@automotivania I'm the opposite. I think that estates are usually always better looking than the saloon. For example the BMW 3/5, Audi A4/A6, Merc C class/E class, Volvo V60/V90 all look better as estate cars to me than they do as Saloons. Saloons have had their day I think. The XF also looks very good as an estate but do think as a saloon that's maybe the best looking one.

I bought an ‘06 plated estate that was used as an airport taxi, with 625,000 miles on it. I loved it. Sadly it wasn’t worth spending the money getting it through the next MOT! Paid £100.00 for it and got that back from the local scrap yard 12 months later. A year of pretty much free motoring. Comfortable, economical and cheap to keep on the road, if you buy Ford parts over Jaguar! I’d have another one tomorrow, if I can find a good one.

Back in ''13 bought one of these. Yes, I'd heard all the Mondeo jokes. Looked 2 cars an '07 X-Type SE and an '06 E90 SE. (Same price) . The BMW I thought looked far more modern but the Jag had all the kit. Swayed I was by leather, sat-nav (was a thing in cars then), electric seats and xenons (was a thing in cars then). Immediately regereted it after I bought it because it looked so damn old. I liked my diesel X-Type very much. I got it new having looked at Audi and BMW alternatives and found it better equipped as standard. I then moved on to the XF following my experience with the X-Type and realised that was a step above. Downsides - it ate front wheel tyres and being front wheel drive struggled up ramps which were slightly icy. PS, I am a Freemason!

I'm 23 years old and I own a 2009 Jag x type silver 2.0 manual. I bought it just after my 21st birthday. I love the car, it has cream interiour. The only thing I dont like about it is that it feels a bit sluggish when you accelerate below 50mph. Once I get it on the motorway it has plenty of overtaking power in fifth gear and you can then feel its torque, but when just pottering around at lower speeds I find it to be underpowered.

I've had my 2003 2.1 litre petrol sport x-type automatic since 2009. It's done 120,000 miles, and my biggest repair cost has been replacing the radiator. The engine runs so smooth that it feels like it's made of lube oil, and the suspension is as sure-footed as the South American jungle cat that gave the car its name. One night, I missed my exit off a motorway, and the next one was too far away as I was already running late. No car was in sight in my rear view mirror, and their was no railing visible on the slip road that I should have taken, so I slowed down to about 25 mph and drove up the steepish, rough, stone embankment to get on the slip road. The car's suspension took the climb effortlessly.

the B5 Audi A4 was based Volkswagen’s Passat and shared far more than the X-Type did with the Mondeo. The Mondeo was the class leader, not Passat, yet being Mondeo related was somehow seen as undesirable. The Mondeo platform was heavily modified by Jaguar being 44mm shorter and 45mm wider. The body was the stiffest in its class by some 30% and the original suspension system on the AWD models bore little resemblance to the Mondeo. It's a bit like saying Saab cars were rebodied GM platforms. Technically speaking they were but were so heavily modified by Saab that eventually GM had had enough and called a halt to Saab production.

Yes you could do worse - how about the X-type indeed. Get a "Mondeo"(which it isn't) for half the price, with leather, and a fat V6 plus 4WD. Ford never got further than 220 horses with the V6. Jag sent it off to Yamaha (again) and got 238. It is the same V6 that you find in the S-type and the XJ. Minus the variable air intake, which wouldn't fit under the bonnet. I'd go for a 3.0 4wd estate... but much too happy with my S-type. Sooner or later I'll stick one of those V6s in my Ford Capri though, and really blow the doors off.
