We've got one of these - it's even the same colour as the one one you're in. Bought it new in 2023. I'm intrigued to know why you don't think it's the best looker in its class. It has class the competition don't have, some of which are almost offensive to the eye. [Yes VW, I'm looking at you]. We bought ours to replace a Focus we'd had for about 14 years which had been OK but lots needed doing over the years. Suspension parts, split drive joint boots, worn drive shafts... nothing serious, but stuff you's think should just work OK for the car's life. I'm on my 3rd MX5, all bought new, and all of which have been 100% trouble free. Nothing except the usual consumables being replaced,. My last one (a 2007 NC) I had for 14 trouble free years, and my present one which I traded the NC for in 2021 (a 2021 ND2) has (so far) followed that trend as well. We looked the new Focus before we bought the CX-30 but..... not for long. A tiny 3-cylinder petrol engine blown by a turbo does not blow my skirt up. It's a recipe for poor reliability and big bills. Turbos are jet engine tech at car prices, so will always be a potential failure point. And little engines worked hard, ditto. Our focus was a normally aspirated 1600 and we never had engine problems. A normally aspirated 2.0 petrol (we don't do big miles so don't need a diesel) is just fine for us. And while my MX5s have never ever failed, my daughter is on her 3rd Nissan Cashcow in 5 years, the others having died, one with serious engine problems. And Cashcows are pig ugly next to the CX-30! So, what do YOU think looks better than a CX-30 in this sector? BTW, our CX-30 is a manual. The gearchange isn't up there wit the MX5's (direct into the box) gear lever as there are linkages in between on the transverse engined CX, but it's pretty good. Certainly better than that on the Focus (which itself, was OK). I normaĺy broadly agree with your views, but I think you got it seriously wrong on this one. And from comments here, it seems I'm not alone. Vince

Agreed. I was a bit baffled with some of the comments on this review. Styling, interior/exterior design, interior quality and ergonomics, driving feel/handling are definitely top of this class. It was this, Focus or Megane and I'm not regretting my choice. And I service it at the main dealer since they are super kind. There was recall for cooler which could leak so they replaced it for free at 100k km when car was out of warranty. Good luck seeing that on European competition. Oh yeah, Sky-X also wakes up above 4000 rpm, but if you drive slowly you really get low consumption, not far from likes of 2.0 TDIs and stuff.

Have a read on the skyactive engine, then drive it. It has a very high compression ratio to assist with feul economy. You looked more engaged as the review went on😅

the coarseness is deliberate, its the engine ECU deliberately running a super lean mixture to heat the cat, it stops after 30 seconds, if it does not stop, walk away.

Mazda are an excellent car, great point on reliability. The main thing that lets them down though is rust - I had a late 2019 Mazda 6 from a main dealer and it had rust on the bonnet and around the boot sils. Unacceptable for a 3 year car with 60k miles on it IMO. Beware.

Not ideal, but you can get it sorted and then wax the car every 3 to 4 months, and wash it in the interim with a wax infused car shampoo. That should protect the paint work

I have one, it does everything well….stellar at nothing, but reliable as rain. Our one in the states comes with 2.5 liter engine…much more pep. The rear wants to come around front on ice, but recovers easily and pleasantly. Very predictable handling.

Your review was in line with my experience, as I hired one from Hertz in Brisbane last year. It was nice, inoffensive and fuel efficient, but had somewhat of a charisma bypass. I found I couldn't get one large and one medium suitcase in the boot, so had to fold the rear seat down. In summary, prefer to keep driving my R170 SLK230 compressor.

Got my CX-30 at the beginning of 2020 new for just under €20k. Reasons I bought this over competitors: The 2.0l naturally aspirated straight 4 engine is very reliable; I wanted a manual transmission car and needed the extra ground clearance because I have to drive on dirt roads and the interior was way nicer than any other car I tried at this price. The small 3cyl turbo engines feel good at low speed but go beyond 80km/h and it feels like you have to get out the car and push it. Overall the CX-30 felt nicer than any car I test driven in this price range: Suzuki Vitara/S-Cross, Dacia Duster(the old version), Peugeot 3008, Nissan Qashqai, VW T-Roc, Skoda Karoq, Ford Puma or Kia XCeed. I would still buy the CX-30 over any of the cars I mentioned above but I do have some nitpicks: Turning radius. If you don`t need the extra ground clearance I would get the Mazda 3 that has the same 2l engine with smaller lighter wheels and is nimbler. Stock 18" rims are too heavy. They do look nice but the car handles and accelerates much better on lighter 16" rims. Rear suspension feels terrible. Driving over any speed bump or pot hole is pain. This is an issue for any car at this price point, not just Mazda. They use torsion beam rear suspension instead of independent because it`s cheaper to manufacture but it is @$$. Mild nitpick: the car is designed to be right wheel drive (Japan) meaning the fuses are on the right side so you get a smaller glove box on the left hand drive that also doesn`t have a light inside. Android Auto is garbage! Apple CarPlay is fine but Android Auto is unusable without a touch screen and Mazda`s own infotainment maps need to be manually updated and are often wrong. Barely anything changed in the car in the past 5 years from release. This is not a bad thing per se since the yearly update is dumb but an upgraded version should be just around the corner and you could either get the new one if it`s worth it or get this version for a discounted price.

Am renting one of these for a couple of days and think I agree with you. Below 4,000rpm the engine's dead and it needs more torque, way more torque. You constantly fall behind traffic when moving off from the lights and when you gently squeeze the throttle nothing happens, until it suddenly kicks down where you're violently thrown back in your seat with a big whoosh of power. But overall it's ok, not great. But ok.

My brother is a mechanic and he has worked on many cars and he said the Mazda Skyactive diesels are not good at all. He has replaced several of those 2.2 Skyactive diesels. A previous work colleague also had a CX5 with the 2.2 diesel which ended in disaster.

The sky active Diesels were change out in 2017 for a brand new Design, which is very reliable. The new engines are spotted by having Adblue, the older very unreliable ones do not. So I was told from a Mazda dealer.

Great review Matt- So enjoy & look forward to your reviews- So we purchased a Mazda 2.2 diesel SportsNav Estate 2016 model in 2018 with 28000 miles - now covered 71k - car serviced by Mazda - plus an oil & filter change interim too as we do a lot of town driving- in 6 years of ownership- one pulley belt -£25.. an O2 type sensor near turbo- known fault with upgraded part & that’s all - it’s our family car & it’s best car we have owned - previously BMW 5 series 525 petrol - lovely car when it worked .. it does everything well - but it’s not exceptional in any one area .. we go camping a couple of times a year & it’s always fully loaded- average about 38mpg around town - mid 40’s on a run - only use shell V-Power Diesel- would be a perfect car if AWD .. Mazda make excellent cars with great spec - No hesitation in buying another Mazda product.. oh and on your advice- gearbox service -£200 ! Job done !

Here in Australia the 2.0L is the small engine. The 2.5L is the one people want even though it is slightly more expensive. More punch, a much better driving experience and only marginally worse petrol consumption. Mazda 'own' the segment here with the CX-5 due to their reliability in Australian conditions. The BT-50 ute is also popular. The others that you mentioned can't really handle the conditions and end up costing a lot more in the long run. In 2022, Mazda dropped two CX-60 pre-production pilot build vehicles into the outback for 6 months of testing before release. Also, being built in Japan or Thailand, it's not as far to ship to Aus, thus cutting a cost involved with the European models. And that is reflected in the price in Aus for a similar spec 2020 2.0L being about AUD$28k - AUD$30k (£14k - £15k). My pick would be a CX-5 or new CX-60 PHEV both with a 2.5L petrol.
