The wife and I now have a 2008 Smart Car, and we love it, it does have 95000 on the clock, but the engine is sound, and apart from a little bit of a problem with reverse gear, which is now sorted, things are now looking up. We do take it on the motorway, M5 and it is NOT the white knuckle ride you talk about, in fact we went on holiday to Ellesmere Port and on the motorway we had a great drive up and back, as long as you stick to 60 or 65, then you don't have a problem. We both feel there is loads of room inside, and the car is very comfy, anyway we are very happy with the car and hope the pleasure it gives us will continue Smart Cars give good M.P.G. and the tax is negligible, which as pensioners in our late 70s is a God send. I would love to get a sat nav fitted, but don't know where to start, also a couple of cup holders. Thanks to you and your video, it was the only choice we needed. Mike and Maureen Palmer

Agree.....I take mine up the m5 regularly from Devon to the Midlands and never had a problem even in windy conditions,it cruises easily at motorway speeds and has plenty of acceleration for overtaking. It also handles really well around twisty lanes and is great fun.I don't understand when people say they accelerate slowly....mine gets up to 60 effortlessly.

Had one of the last of this particular style and you know what... might just be the most fun car I've ever owned. No, I'm serious! More space up front than most superminis, ridiculously practical for its size (two people, luggage for a week and xmas presents was no problem) and surprisingly rapid up to around 40mph. Takes a while to get up to motorway speeds but, honestly, still better than most entry level superminis will do. Quite happily did 250 mile journeys home and got out the other end feeling no worse than any other car. That said if you DO buy one two things to watch out for. 1) The gearbox does have a mild identity crisis every time it has to swap a cog. It'll take it a few seconds to remember it's a gearbox and not a North African swallow so plan ahead. 2) High winds are not your friend. That one I discovered when going over the Severn Bridge and if you've ever seen the Top Gear episode where Jeremy built a 3 floor camper van on a Citroen you've got a pretty good idea of the driving experience.

I've been driving smarts for 19 years. They do take some getting used to initially, but they are the perfect city car for one or two people, plus a small amount of luggage. I regularly drive on motorways in the UK and many European countries and it's no problem. Economical, very easy to park, quirky and reliable if maintained properly.

Totally agree, I like this reviewer but he's complaining about 4 hours on a motorway. I drove a 2002 cabrio one in winter to visit my family there, I live in Portsmouth. This drive was only a couple of years ago, and the Smart 450 had 102,000 miles on it, and it has the 599cc engine. I fitted it with winter tyres, legal requirement in Switzerland in winter, and I had no problems on snowy and icy roads.

I own one if these. Fantastic car for zipping around congested cities and parking is never an issue. It's a pretty stiff ride and positively terrifying at highway speeds on a windy day, but overall the benefits outweigh the downsides. Extremely cheap to run and very reliable. Also, I'm 6'2 and I fit just fine, although an adjustable steering column would have been nice.

I've even brought timber home in it with the back 'window' open. I actually drive it up and down the M25 once a week and I actually think it's quite good on the motorway - I cruise comfortably at 80mph. When I grow up I really want to buy the Brabus version - it sounds downright fantastic. Honestly, when you're inside it you completely forget how small the car is. It's only when you get out that you remember. Smart cars rule!

That was an interesting review and your comments are spot on. We bought our RHD ‘peanut’ headlight smart 4-2 Passion from new back in 2002 and we still own it twenty years later 😁 Once out of warranty I had it modified. Roadster turbo, uprated air induction, remap, Janspeed exhaust (they were involved with the mods),lowered stiffer suspension, uprated front discs and wider wheels/tyres. What an improvement. We will run her until she drops. Luckily I know a superb independent smart service engineer who has kept her running well so hope to have her for a few years yet. Still get friendly waves from owners of earlier models 😁

My wife had a 54 plate semi auto as her first car, it was good fun and went like a go kart. Servicing was fun, the rear bumper and crash bar had to come off to get to the 6 spark plugs (twin plug engine), one of which was tucked behind an oil pipe. Needed a special plug lead puller because they were buried deep in the head. No sump drain plug on the engine either so I bought a boat pump on eBay and sucked the oil out through the dipstick tube. Early engines used a bit of oil. Loads of accessories though, even got a DAB radio working!

Great cars. I had a Smart Roadster which was the best handling car I've ever driven. An old girlfriend had a fortwo and it was surprisingly spacious, comfortable and fun to drive. Just a pity about the auto gearbox at times as it's a bit dim. The roadster was fun with flappy paddles though :)

Was a little nervous there Matt. Knowing your direct approach and factual honesty! Yes was first smitten with the ForTwo in its “Smart Coupe” name when we purchased one of the first RHD 450’s (Pulse) from Smart in Birmingham. Loved it. Years later (many) and slowly building a more modest (to yours) collection of vehicles including a 2CV and Clio RS, we now have an 06 450 and driving it has brought as many smiles as those 20 years back. Accept what you say about the reliability of the older ones but as you mentioned ours is being given to Smart Technic in Birmingham for a proper seeing to. Enjoyed the review as always and hope your “scrapper” N/S drop glass has been fitted to the LS 430 👍

I bought a 4:2 mk1 9 years ago. It now has 285k km on clock. Bomb up and down motorway almost daily. other than servicing only cost has been an electric clutch, battery and next week rear brake cylinders and anti roll bars. Very pleased with it. Will get another when ours gives up ghost.

I used to own a Smart Roadster Brabus Coupe (Nice short name) back when they were only 2-3 years old. It was the most fun car i have ever owned, people used to think it was a Lotus Elise but it had massive reliability issues: doors unlocking while driving, leaking water in via mirrors, faulty heater, broken interior door handle ... all of this in just 10mths ownership from a approved used Merc Dealership. Whilst my car was in the dealership getting fixed (Quite often) i got to drive a courtesy Four Two and Four Four, the Four Four was rubbish but i loved the little Four Two.

I'm glad you liked the ForTwo. I'm 6'2' and have a 2013 Convertible for driving around town and I love it. Even more so as it's wrapped in orange, so it's like a car in a High Vis. You can park it anywhere. It uses almost no fuel and with plastic panels, you don't much care if anyone bumps you when they are parking. Our dog fits in the back and she sits above the engine so it's warmi(ish) even in winter with the roof down.

Good balanced review! I owned a MK1 Pure for 5 years bought second hand 3 years old... I absolutely loved it as a city car. Never went wrong apart from blowing the odd headlight bulb, servicing was cheap, running costs low, and body panels don't dent. Surprisingly spacious inside with ample boot space for a week's shopping for family of four. I even had a 2 meter Christmas tree in it one year! A critical check is oil & filter quality... check these have been changed at least to the service schedule. MK1's had no sump bolt to gravity drain engine oil... it has to be sucked out from the top, so oil servicing can get omitted. Buy it right and it'll run for years.

Always seen these car as a sensible first car for a new driver, 2 seats keep the numbers down in one, fast enough, but not to fast, good safety setup, good visibility and cheap to run and own.

I watch all of your videos and love every one of them , always very informative and you come across as the first honest car dealer ive come across 😁 . I own a 451 84bhp convertible 0-60 before bedtime 😂 , but i love it , people laugh at me but i dont care im saving in the pocket , they are very quirky and like marmite , you either hate them or love them . Ive had over 60 cars in my time and its definitely one of the best cars ive ever had , but im much older now speed is a thing if the past lol . Gear change is quicker when you know its about to change gear just ease of the accelerator and it also does change smoother.but i tend to use mine in manual mode mostly. You mention about smart specialists , i only use one of these because they know them inside out as they are very different to other cars . I know this video is 2 years old but still very enjoyable to watch . Thanks very much for posting the videos you do , keep up the good work . 😊👍😮

A friend had a MK3 - with the 900cc turbo. It made a great racket, was surprisingly swift and would turn in it's own length. The only complaints I had were the fact the steering required constant adjustment - and that being 6'5 he looked ridiculous in it!

I also own the 71BHP mhd and this review is pretty much on point. Something I noticed, that wasn’t mentioned, is that mhd versions of the car are troublesome. The start stop system is flawed and the cars often have issues with the accessory belt snapping or even the belt pulley. If that happens mid-drive, you run a risk of cooking the motor as on that same belt is the water cooling pump. After I bought my mhd, with 60k miles, the belt pulley broke on the third day. I would recommend the Turbo variant, it goes like crazy, gets similar MPG and doesn’t have start-stop.

We bought ours (fourtwo passion) in 2003 and still have it. We specced it with pas, electric sunroof etc. It was also adapted with infra red controls so my wife can drive it. (she had a severe stroke). We now live in Southern France and the UV and heat has taken its toll. The headlining fell down a few years ago and the plastic rear quarter windows are totally crazed, also we're on our third set of front springs. . However, and this is the important bit, it's still going strong. Although I have a powerful BMW I very often prefer to take out the Smart, it's great fun to drive.

I drove an early model, about 5 years ago and laughed my way around a test drive. I loved the style, but not the ride, too fidgety. The gearbox was awful but fun, I could make the car lurch as I moved the lever!! Then I looked in the rear view mirror and saw a lorry who was so close I thought it was trying to mate with the smart. I did find it full of character though!! I am glad they improved the quality.
