Love thiccpads. I have a P50, myself. Having the added heft in the base of the laptop does improve the typing experience because it feels more solid in your lap. I don't get the same stability when typing on an X1 Carbon 6th gen. Build quality is definitely better in the X1C, with keys that are more tactile, springy, and don't wobble like the P50, but P50 has superior weight and travel distance.

Louis Roussman once showed another benefit of a T440 over later models. Since the T450 the batteries cannot go beyond the back end, because of the hinges that make the laptop thinner. If you take a bigger battery it gives you something to hold the laptop while it's open and that way you can actually work on it while you are on a walk. Also the newer style of hinges seems to break more often, but that might only count for macbooks. Had I known that I can replace the clickpad, I would have gotten a T440. But I'm still happy with my T450s

I’ve owned a couple of these over a couple of years now. The first one I had, I accidentally snapped one of the latches for the touchpad ribbon, preventing me from connecting one to the main board. I decided to pick up another and found one on eBay for £130! This had an i3 CPU, but the beauty of this laptop is the socketed CPU. Upgraded to an i7 with 16GB RAM, 480GB ssd and a 1080p IPS display for less than £200. If you look at the build quality and specs of a modern laptop at £330 (the most I would have payed the the laptop + upgrades) they don’t come close. I’ve not used a brand new laptop that feels this solid in years. They just don’t make them like this any more. Most of the things you’d want to upgrade are under the bottom cover which takes 2 screws to remove. I’d take a half inch extra thickness for this any day. Its better than having to use a spudger to pop snaps out of place to upgrade your ram, risking affecting the way the case fits together permanently. This hardware plays nicely with linux out of the box too, a massive bonus. I hope in the future lenovo can appreciate why people like these older models and what makes them the “engineers” laptop, and wake up to the fact that its the product which is truly great, not the aesthetic and brand

I used to have a T500 with 2, maybe 3 hours of battery life max. I used it for school and couldn't really use it all day due to the battery life. It was also super heavy and the screen was awful. The T440 might have a much better screen and maybe better battery life but it's still heavy and new Laptops are honestly better for a lot of things. Fun fact: You only have to go up slightly in price to match the Haswell quad cores and those are at half the TDP and you get a way slimmer machine. Not every new Laptop is a Macbook.

Not bad at all in my opinion for a 3-4 year old computer. The trick with using the awful touchpad on the T440 (or X240) is to turn off the trackpad in Synaptics setup. This means that the trackpad now ONLY has functionality as buttons for the trackpoint. If you do this, than it works Ok, and it really isn't much worse than regular trackpoint buttons. However, if you try to leave the trackpad enabled, it just doesn't work at all, and you are constantly selecting wrong things and clicking when you don't intend to. I'd still recommend an xx50 or newer model (xx60, xx70) instead, as the specs are slightly better, they're still almost as cheap, and the dedicated trackpoint buttons are still better than the pad, even just as a button.

I'm opting to keep Windows because I prefer much of Adobe software for my photography business, and just don't want to add complexity to my life with multiple OSs. I may switch my T420 with Windows 7 to a Linux Distro though as Windows 7 is no longer supported.

I still completely love my T440 (non-P, which makes it quite a bit thinner). My only complaint is that Lenovo ditched the old-style keyboards in favor of stupid chiclet keys. It is funny that you refer them as the "new design" of keyboards. They were actually introduced back in the 70's and 80's, but fell out of fashion due users widely considering far inferior--that is--until Apple brought the design back, after which the public suddenly decided they were amazing. 🙄

We are still running multiple ones at work, because of how modular and serviceable they are, and I myself work on a T560. (That one has the ventilation on the other side of the control thingy of the docking station). I think you can actually still use external GPUs by taking out the LTE card
@criticallycheesycaleb66815 жыл бұрын
You can connect an eGPU to the laptop if it is equipped with a mini pcie slot, like where you would find the wifi card. My t450 actually has an extra one right next to the wifi card. The companies that made eGPU adapters that connected via express card decided to go a different route when the industry stopped making laptops with express card.
@WolfgangsChannel5 жыл бұрын
This would be somewhat inconvenient since you would either need to drill a hole in the bottom case, or just take it off every time you want to connect an eGPU. Also you'll need to choose between Wi-Fi or eGPU
@criticallycheesycaleb66815 жыл бұрын
@@WolfgangsChannel would you rather have it a little inconvenient or rely on intel Hd graphics? Of course, the eGPU would not be a mobile option. As for choosing between WIFI and eGPU, mine has two mini pcie slots, but for the ones that don't, you could use a usb wifi adapter or even ethernet. Good video!

@@WolfgangsChannel No one reporting success with an eGPU? There are a few KZbin videos of people successfully connecting an eGPU and playing games with it. I'll link one in a moment.
A couple things I'd like to say after owning a T440p for about a year now. Firstly, your old chargers aren't useless because of the plug change. You can get adapters on Amazon for about 3.50 USD each. Secondly, I can't speak for Iris Pro graphics, but I'm quite certain after using it that the GT 730M is about 2-2.5 times as powerful as the HD 4400 graphics on the CPU. Thirdly, I'd advise against getting one at all if you're a heavy user on the go. I was extremely disappointed when my unit arrived and I realized it only supported a single 6 or 9 cell battery, hence ditching support for hot swapping. Other than that, I guess it's okay.
@WolfgangsChannel5 жыл бұрын
Something worth noting here is that if you want to use a more beefy power adapter (like 130W) you'll need to use the "native" charger since all of the adapters you've mentioned have a resistor built in that only lets 90W through. You can always cut it open with a hobby blade and replace the resistor but I imagine that the majority of people will prefer to just buy a "native" power adapter marc.merlins.org/perso/linux/post_2016-02-29_Hacking-a-thinkpad-slim-tip-adapter-to-output-more-than-90W-_required-to-charge-a-Thinkpad-P70_.html Other than that I agree

@tatua.38205 жыл бұрын
Why not get a t440s instead? Then you get the dual battery option instead of the optical drive and a thinner and lighter model. That was my personal daily driver until I got a x250 to replace it. Next one will probably be a t470 for the thunderbolt but need to wait a few years before they become affordable on the 2nd hand market. I actually put a t440p ips screen into it since the one on it was shattered when I salvaged it. That said, I did grab a i7 from a damaged fujitsu the model of which I forgot and put that into another 440p I still have. Is the most powerful laptop I have rn but I still wont lug that thing with me if I don't need to.

@@WolfgangsChannel I checked my T430 for pwm and unsurprisingly it flickers like hell. I was wondering why I feel so strange looking at the screen and attributed it to poor viewing angles, but pwm might be a big part of it. I got a Dell Lattitude E6440 for a 100 euros with a 250 gb 850 evo, put 16gb in and waiting for the cooling paste to come in so I can replace the i5-4310M it came with with an i7-4700MQ*. Very easy laptop to open, reach the internals, it's rigidly built, and the battery is detachable. Keyboard is really decent for a laptop. I wanted a thinkpad t440p, but it's so memed to this point that I can only find it for 150 to 200 euros here in Holland. * If you have an E6440, beware that the i7-4700MQ might not operate well because it's wattage is way higher, I'm gonna try it out, but don't take my word for it that it won't fry your motherboard / thermal throttle your cpu to death.
@dorusie55 жыл бұрын
Thermal paste came in today, tested the thermals and benchmarked the cpu. With the new thermal paste, it runs even cooler than before (47 normally, 68 during stress test). It's quicker, but not by much, it's mostly having the extra cores that is nice of this upgrade.
