I`ve just parted with a 2002 Jeep Cherokee 2.4 litre petrol after 9 years of faithful service operating in rugged, wet and snowy rural North Wales. It`s at its best in the worst winter conditions that can be thrown at it. I remember leaving it for a frozen week covered in heavy snow and it started without difficulty at a temperature of - 17C. Downhill traction on the 1 : 4 lane down the mountainside here in snow when low range 4x4 was engaged ( with a mechanical "clunk" like a Victorian signal box lever !) was brilliant and outperformed my neighbours` VW Toureg and BMW X3 respectively who were left floundering. I agree that the interior is basic but it was sturdy and never got any worse ! Someone said that JEEP stands for "Just Enough Essential Parts" and if you approach it in this spirit you won`t be disappointed....at least it is more comfortable than the 1942 Original and, in my experience, just as tough. It isn`t for the soft-roader brigade or for parking on the pavement outside your local wine bar but is strong enough to confront and overcome the challenges of American climate conditions which are even worse than our own. You could fry potatoes on the heater output and it gave a regular mpg of around 27....not so very different from the 2.8 litre Mercedes diesel in the model you tested. I can`t recall having trouble in locating the handbrake (really I can`t !) and the brakes gave excellent and reassuring retardation in all conditions. It did have an appetite for front discs and pads as well as the rear section of the exhaust system, none of which were cheap even if one went for the option of pattern parts as replacements. The bodywork and paint finish were as good as you would wish to find on any vehicle abandoned to the elements throughout its 17 years in the UK. And why, at last, did I part with it ? I watched your video extolling the virtues of a used Range Rover Sport and was seduced !

OMG,lots of haters here that probably have never even sat in one.I have owned a 2011 3.7 V6 KK for 3 years now and with 120000kms and have only replaced a water pump and a battery plus general maintenance.I love it and love driving it except for the leather seats that are too firm but the leather has held up beautifully and better than european cars leather seats.The V6 has heaps of power and is fun to drive and also has the benefit of being an older style engine which makes it quite easy to work on which is great for me as I do all my own work on my cars and was one of the deciding factors to buy it.I have lifted it and fitted taller tyres,bull bar and winch and it is very capable offroad and with the after market suspension handles really well and personally would disagree with you about being tiring to drive and I live in the bush with lots of roads a lot worse that you are driving on with lots of bends and hills.The traction system these vehicles have is awesome and very similar to the ML Mercedes,nearly as good as lockers.I have owned 4x4's my whole life and this KK handles better that most of them and if you think otherwise you must be too used to normal cars.A couple of little creaks is nothing for a 4x4 but I do agree that the plastic used in the interior is not too good but it has held up really well with no cracks or anything falling off or even fading for that matter and still looks new on the inside.I also love the utilitarian look of them,not everyone's cup of tea though.One person in the comments mentioned these were terrible engines,that is not true,they are an old school engine that was around for many many years in various forms because it was a good engine and the sump sludge someone mentioned doesn't happen if you use good synthetic oil and change regularly,which I do every 7500 kms.Anyway each to their own but I love my KK and know many peeps here in Australia that agree with me.

I have 2012 mod 3.7 l version of it. Had it for 3 years, soon 4, and i never had anything wrong with it. The most reliable car i ever had, and i have had a few during 35 years of driving. Yes it's expensive to use, but you get a rugged car that takes you to where ever you want to go. This car is close to the discovery when it comes to offroad capabillities. I live now in South Brasil, with a lot of terrible mud roads, and i have never got stuck. And you don't buy a jeep like this if you only drive around in town.

@@HighPeakAutos Really - one can abuse the KK for taking kids to school or grocery getting but that is quite a shame . KK got an outstanding offroad capability in it's class ( certainly not compared with a Jeep RUBICON ) and with it you can drive circles around all those street focused car based SUV's . Also it was found to be an excellent tractor for pulling heavy trailers by AutoBILD Allrad Magazine as well as ranked no.2 in the annual Winter Test of the same Mag, issues 09/2019 and 02/2020 . Of course KK is not a barn burner but it is not meant to be one.

I had the older model, the Cherokee XJ with the 4.0 straight six engine. Absolutely loved the engine but didn't like that it wasn't permanent four-wheel drive. It creaked and clunked when I put it in 4x4 mode but it never let me down. Mine run on LPG which reduced costs massively. It was so easy to fix that pretty much any garage could work on it. I have the 3.7 V6 model in the Middle East and I think you're very harsh on it although the trim I have is better than the lego set you're in. I love the car it's got loads of character and handles well on and off road, easy to park as well. Great all round visibility too. Main issue is the electrics - they are really poor. Lights just come on and off whenever they fancy and with a year and 15k done on it since I bought it, runs just fine. Overall I recommend the car but you're right about the leg room and storage, it's poor for a car of its size.

Probably one of the most hated Jeeps here in the States, along with the Patriot and other little “Jeeps”. If you’re going to buy a Jeep (later model), buy a Wrangler or a Grand Cherokee, or don’t buy one at all. Also, if you look at Jeep as a luxury vehicle, you’ll be disappointed for sure, but if you look at it in terms of utility and usability, it’s hard to find something that compares for such a price.

I’ve owned the same model for 3 yrs and everything in the review is true. The 2.8 diesel is rough sluggish and thirsty. Heating has packed up which is a £700 fix. Sometimes the stereo sound goes off which is sorted by turning ignition over a few times. Mine came with all terrain tyres which are lethal on damp tarmac. Parts are dear and hard to source. Jet washing blows the rear door seals off. It’s great for match fishing as good off road and the boot is huge with the seats folded. It’s so bad I’m going to run into the ground and chuck it away as a px. Wouldn’t even think of selling it to someone.

My Wife used to have a last of the line WJ Grand Cherokee Limited with the 4.0 straight six. Despite a bit of a low-rent interior, the car was fantastic, rode really well, didn't rust, was super easy to work on, was very quiet, very very comfortable, was incredibly reliable and despite the 180'000 miles on the clock, was built like a tank. I then went to work away for a while, and without my knowledge she traded in our mint WJ Grand Cherokee for a newer WK Grand Cherokee Overland 3.0 CRD. What a complete and utter heap of shit. Despite the claim of 210 bhp, I'd be amazed if it's even got half of that, (it's slower than my old 300tdi Discovery), it can't even manage 20mpg, so this diesel Grand Cherokee is a lot worse on fuel than our old petrol Grand Cherokee, it's very noisy, very uncomfortable, cramped in the back, rusts like nothing I've ever seen before, (and that includes late 80's Fords, Land Rovers and British Leyland junk), parts are expensive, the build quality is appalling, worse even than TVRs or 1980's Lotus's, it looks like it's been painted by Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles, (I've never seen paint as bad on any car in my life), and when you poke about underneath the car, it becomes obvious of all the places Daimler Chrysler have pinched 50cents here and there throwing the heap of junk together. In my opinion, the older, proper Jeeps are decent motors, built like tanks, whilst the newer stuff, especially made under Daimler Chrysler are utter, utter, utter piles of putrid, steaming shit, only one very small step above walking barefoot in the rain. I'd rather be bummed by a broken bottle than buy another WK Grand Cherokee again.

@@HighPeakAutos : Not just more reliable, but better in every measurable way. How on earth you get a 3.0 turbo diesel to be significantly worse on fuel than a 4.0 petrol I've no idea. And the ride quality in the car is the worse I've ever experienced. Worse even than a base model Fiat Cinquecento I had in the late 90's. It feels like the dampers are filled with concreate and the springs are made out of marshmallows. Whoever signed off on the ride and handling of that car needs to be lined up against a wall and shot.

This guy is talking absolute shit. Yes I agree that the interior trim is awful inside but having owned one of these for 7 years now, I have done just over 100,000 miles in it and other than routine maintenance, a turbo hose rupturing and two oil seals which needed replacing, it has been absolutely fantastic. It's brilliant in the snow and offroad (although perhaps not quite as a good as a Wrangler), and it's one of the few proper 4x4 SUV'S still around. I have taken mine through rivers, over open moorland and rough rocky tracks and it has been brilliant. So yes its not a Landrover Discovery but to be honest it has been a lot more reliable than a Landrover. Would I buy one again?.....for off road and snow use 100% yes, but for motorway cruising probably no, not because of its comfort but because you only get 24mpg af around 75mph! But with its 2.8 CRD Fiat truck engine under the bonnet/hood, that means it's pretty robust. If you are in the market for a weekend proper 4x4 'truck' which you want to have some fun in, and you have a limited budget, then they are well worth considering.

I’m told that although it’s cheap inside, they hold up well. Thinking about picking one of these up for a work truck. Can get a 2010 here for about $5500. They are everywhere here in the states.

I've a 2006 with the 3.0. It has a lot of plastic. Owned it for 4 years and its great in the dirt. Steering has good feedback and comfortable on the road. Turbo lag is an issue. Takes a few seconds from the lights, but once its up and going it takes off. Watch the ones from 2007 as they had bodgy DPF's. It was a quick fix by Mercedes and very expensive when things go wrong. I've replaced the Alternator and it was very expensive as you would expect from a Mercedes. Parts are starting to get harder too find so again getting expensive.

I have a 2008 Liberty that I drive in the winter here in the US. Gets around great in the snow, but it's such a terrible vehicle to live with everyday. It's loud, cramped, inefficient, and slow. I'm sure it's good off road, but I'd rather have a nicer vehicle most of the time.

I must say that I felt a small prejudgement against anything american.. I will have to agree with someone below that this is a very good off-road vehicle and this review, even if it was nice overall, it was not covering the off-road part at all, which is why most people would buy this. And for the price you get a good off roader with nice looks and size. For handling, fuel, tax and materials I agree. Thanks.

So how do UK Road Tax Brackets work? I see him talk about luxury cars like the BMW 5 Series that cost like 300 pounds to tax and then there is a cheap car like this that costs upwards of 500 pounds?
@alpal482
@alpal482 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry you had to wait a year, the answer is emissions the higher the pollution the higher the tax. However more people are buying low emission and no emission cars like electric so when the emissions don’t make the UK government money they’ll find something else to pick on, probably boot/trunk space.

I think these cars are designed from their origins- War time vehicles that you drove through mud / scratched and basically ran into the ground. No premium features because that's not what this car is designed for its a thrasher or a "paddock basher" Aussie slang

Boy that's cheap and nasty. A mate had the Grand Cherokee 5 litre V8 back in 2006. It actually drove OK but the reliability was horrendous. It spent so much time back at the main dealers, (and the petrol station) that it wasn't funny. Eventually they bought it back off of him but at huge loss for him.
