I bought our 2015 Model S 85D a month after you (@ 18,460 miles) and can definitely mirror your analysis. It has been fantastic! You can tow with the Model S especially a small boat, you would just need to install a hitch. It is fairly easy to do after removing the bumper.
@ElectricTechAdventures4 жыл бұрын
One reason why I haven't added the hitch up to this point was simply the cost, and also not knowing how much range I'd lose towing. Shortly after recording this video I decided to go for it and two days ago I ordered the EcoHitch and a wiring harness! I intend to do the install myself [crossing my fingers I don't run into any problems beyond my skill level] and I'll be making a KZbin video about it. Initially I found the hitch ($450) and wiring ($229) on etrailer.com but found I can get the hitch from Torklift for $378 and the wiring from Amazon (3 different purchases since I had to somewhat create my own "kit" that etrailer assembled) for $156. So I saved $195.42 from what etrailer.com charges. Right now I plan to do the install May 30th, so here's hoping it all goes well, I've never installed a trailer hitch on any vehicle before. I'm excited to have the ability to put our bike rack on the trailer hitch receiver and tow our small 14 foot fishing boat, and I'll be reporting here on KZbin how that goes. We're certainly going to get looks from people on boat ramps...
@ElectricTechAdventures4 жыл бұрын
Well ya...that is pretty obvious. Unfortunately I don't have a more recent X as it would cost $79,990 (excluding taxes/fees) where my Model S was $39,400...double the price. Instead I installed the trailer hitch on my S for $378. Pretty big price difference if you ask me, that very much justifies getting by with my 256 miles of range instead of the X's 351 miles of range to have nearly the same functionality (just lower towing capacity).
@ElectricTechAdventures4 жыл бұрын
As an update I installed the trailer hitch a few weeks back and yesterday I took my boat out on the lake for the first time and it towed very well. The power consumption was obviously higher, averaging around 430 Wh/mi over 15 miles at 70 mph on the freeway. I intend to do another test towing it with the boat cover on to see how that reduces the aerodynamic drag. I raised the air suspension on uneven terrain and never once scraped the hitch. I'm going to upload a couple videos about the trailer hitch installation and trailing lights wiring in a few weeks.

Thanks! Our Model S has certainly been an awesome road trip car as I've shown through many road trip videos here on our channel. It's supercharging speed has begun to slow down so we've been slightly adding more time to our expectations of how long it'll take to get somewhere. More recently we've been taking our all electric travel trailer on most of our trips so we've had to take our gas Ford F-250 truck sadly. I want to get an electric truck that can tow our trailer AND seat 6 and I'm really hoping the Cybertruck is that vehicle, because so far none of the other trucks seat 6 AND can handle the tongue weight of our trailer. I wish you the best in your own EV journey!

Oh, I forgot, I had a parking brake alert come up one morning. Called Tesla and the said to bring it in. The alert went away and has never shown up again. They found it in the car’s log but said it was just a fluke! I’ve only driven mine 14,000 miles. My tires are still at 5/32”, hope they last another 12 months, particularly now that we hardly drive.

I've had a random fluke here and there too like the one morning on our Orlando road trip leaving Slidell, LA and autopilot didn't work for the first drive of the day. It was super rough having to manually drive the car for like 2 hours when the car usually does most of the work.

@ElectricTechAdventures4 жыл бұрын
@@iphonenerd7 there are two versions of autopilot hardware in Teslas. The first version began sometime in 2014 and is made by a company named MobileEye and that's what I have. It doesn't improve and probably never will. Last year it was in some people's opinion better than version 2, but it's now getting surpassed in my opinion. Version 2 is when Tesla took it in house and that began in 2016 and the software and hardware is what is improving going forward that you hear about. I'm very happy with autopilot 1.0. I hope to be able to have full self driving in my Cybertruck though and have it drop me and my mountain bike off at the top of mountains! That's a ways off I'm sure.

Awesome vid thank you for the info; deciding between a cpo S or order a Y for family use. Will need a roof rack for Yakima. Decisions decisions
@ElectricTechAdventures4 жыл бұрын
Glad it was helpful! Tesla does sell a roof rack for the Model S with panoramic glass roof like mine, but they don't sell one for the metal roof. The Model Y is certainly appealing, but being newer will be more expensive. It has the latest battery tech (250 kW charge rate) and some other improvements over a used Model S like 316 miles of rated range over my now 256 miles of rated range. It's base price is $53,000 though, and if you want to ability to seat 7 you'd have to add an additional $3,000 and if you want towing ability another $1,000. So in short I think the Model Y is better, but you're paying roughly $17,000 additional for those improvements. I added a trailer hitch to my Model S after I made this video (I'll be making a video about the hitch installation) and my S seats 7 and I have 256 miles of rated range all for about $40,000 so I think going CPO has great value considering the price difference. Good luck making your decision, but I'm sure you'll be happy either way!

I feel the same way, but I've had others say that seems like a normal amount of things to fix over 100,000 miles and 6 years. I don't have a lot of data to go off of so for me it is what it is at this point and I take solace in the fact that up to this point we've spent so little on maintenance and operation of the vehicle that there's a lot of room to fix things going forward and still have the vehicle be cheaper overall than our previous vehicle, or comparable vehicles.

Good video! Very good audio quality and good stats on costs. Glad you are enjoying your car so much. Question: Any issues with the rear facing seats area getting too hot or too cold? I have read that that space is not sufficiently ventilated, especially for hot weather.
@ElectricTechAdventures4 жыл бұрын
Good question. We actually had intended to mention this but forgot to. When it is really hot the rear facing seats are on the too hot side for children except for short distances. Even making sure that the HVAC system is not on recirculation and that it is bringing in fresh air is not sufficient and it gets pretty hot in the back even with blasting uncomfortably cold and loud in the front. I have considered getting a fan or two to put between the headrests to blow into the back but I have only gone through one summer and didn't get around to doing it last summer and so maybe I will this summer. But the reality is that when it is really hot our children have the option of sitting in the normal forward facing rear seats. It is only extremely hot here for two to three months a year so the vast majority of the year the rear facing seats work just fine without being too hot.
@davidbryant28724 жыл бұрын
@@ElectricTechAdventures Thanks for the response. I have seen posts that show various fan arrangements for the rear-facing seats, so you might search for them if you want to explore that option further.
@ElectricTechAdventures4 жыл бұрын
@@davidbryant2872 yes I have seen some KZbin videos and other forum posts about fan configurations in the back. Some of them just buy after-market fans and plug them into the 12-volt power outlet in the front of the car. Some take apart the plastic on the back hatch and figure out how to mount fans built into the hatch itself. It has not yet been a big enough deal for us to go to the effort of doing anything. But this summer I may.

Thanks for the video and very useful information. Two questions: What is the make and model of the inflatable bed you used for the back of the Model S? Do the seats lay completely flat, or do you have to put in extra pieces of ???? to offset the bump of the non-flat rear cabin. Also, please reply with a link for DIY solar.
@ElectricTechAdventures4 жыл бұрын
The mattress we used is the Coleman Soft Plush Top Inflated Quickbed amzn.to/2yzLlqG The pump for it is the Coleman QuickPump amzn.to/2WuSZdQ Both I linked to in the description of this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXWuYquqrZmErtU and this kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3zHlnWke858bq8 video I made on camping in my Model S with two of my girls. The seats lay horizontal, but they're about 2 inches higher than the trunk area unfortunately. So half the bed area is 2 inches lower than the other half. Thankfully the thickness of the Coleman air mattress is sufficient to not feel the ridge at all, unless your mattress is underinflated. I've considered bringing something to lay in the trunk to make everything level, but it's just something more to bring that's unnecessary in my experience. You bringing this up made me realize I never pointed out the ridge in any of my videos, so I'll make sure to talk about that in my next Tesla camping video which I'll be recording this weekend. My DIY solar installation video is kzbin.info/www/bejne/jonUdpKdoddpb8k where I lay out all the costs of installing my system in detail. Since I made this video I've upgraded my system to 9.98 kW which is what you saw in the areal video of this Tesla review video. As a new Mom looking for a family car / work commute vehicle, this video has been extremely helpful. For months, I've been looking at SUVs/CUVs both hybrid, and electric, and not really liking anything in terms of design, function, range, etc. Considering the known quality issues of a Tesla, I'll certainly considering buying CPO, unless the warranty is transferrable? Thanks so much!
@ElectricTechAdventures3 жыл бұрын
I'm glad to hear it! I have utilized the warranty more than I had originally expected. However all the issues have been somewhat minor. We've never been stranded, or phrased a different way all the issues we've had haven't compromised our ability to still drive. The electric batteries and motors are more reliable than an internal combustion engine. The weakness of some Teslas (Mostly the Model X and lesser so the Model S) is all the other technology on board like the falcon wing doors in the Model X or the pop out door handles on the Model S. I've heard from the service technicians at the service center recently when I was having the sunroof replaced (under warranty) that the Model X and S (but more so the X) are by far the vehicles they see come in for service the most. He said the Model 3 and Y are way less prone to needing service. I'm glad to hear they're improving, and I'm hopeful the Cybertruck will be better still! Repairs aside, we've LOVED having the Model S as our primary family vehicle, and since I work from home now we even sold our Nissan LEAF so now our Model S is our only vehicle until Tesla will sell us a Cybertruck. In general I do recommend buying a used Tesla from Tesla so that you can get the CPO warranty, but if you buy private party the warranty that the vehicle still has does transfer to the new owner I believe. Thanks for subscribing! I'll be publishing a 2 year in review video soon since May 10th is our 2 year anniversary with our Model S!

@@ElectricTechAdventures Thanks Anthony. Very helpful. I currently own an Audi A5 coupe, bought pre-owned from an indy dealer. Our repair costs have been outrageous, so I have to get my hubby on board with a Tesla, and warranty. One more question: you mentioned you don't have access to historical service/repair records?
@ElectricTechAdventures3 жыл бұрын
@@TaniaAHill The issue with the historical records is that Tesla can't share PII (Personally Identifiable Information) which the service records have on them. In short they won't just give you all the documentation. (I think they should just create a report that scrubs all PII and lists all the service that has been performed with basic information like the odometer and date.) Last week I was in the service center and the employee I spoke with said that he could review the service history and verbally tell me what was done prior to me owning the vehicle. So we did just that and I jotted down general notes of what was done and when. I'll be including that information in my 2 year in review video.

I'm looking at a 2013 Model S p85. Concerned about its age and battery death. What's your prediction on this vintage of Tesla? Will they live on forever like old Toyotas?
@ElectricTechAdventures Жыл бұрын
Based on the research that I've done and just experience with Tesla and following the company closely for 6 years now it appears that the majority of the battery packs that fail do so while under warranty which is 8 years long. If the battery hasn't catastrophically failed to the point that it has to be entirely replaced within the first 8 years it is not terribly likely to just all of a sudden fail after that. Battery degradation is still happening throughout that time frame but at this age the battery has probably lost around 10% and will not lose range more quickly. It loses The range more quickly early on in its life and then tapers out and loses range very slowly over the rest of its lifespan. As long as the battery still has enough range for what you need the car for it should continue to work for many more years. I anticipate getting around half a million miles out of my car. Only time will tell if I am correct, however there are people who have used their Model S more than I have and have already achieved that many miles. Such as taxi services like Tesloop. Right now our Model S is our primary vehicle but once we get the Cybertruck then our model S will be our around town vehicle and we probably won't take it on road trips as much anymore because the charging speed at superchargers is a lot slower than the Cybertruck will be.

It actually says it has free Unlimited supercharging on the app in Specs and warranty but I suspect it has been sold back to tesla because it also says Used vehicle limited warranty has expired on 28th November 2022 and I think their policy is to remove it when they resell @@ElectricTechAdventures
@ElectricTechAdventures Жыл бұрын
My understanding is that free unlimited supercharging is only removed from used Tesla vehicles that are purchased directly from Tesla the company. If it's a private party purchase then free supercharging is not removed. Perhaps that's outdated information, but I've never heard a change to that. If in the app under Specs & Warranty it has "Free Unlimited Supercharging" listed then I'd say you have it. That's what mine says anyway. The used vehicle warranty is good for 4 years if the vehicle was under 60k miles or 2 years above 60k. If it was sold to the prior owner in 2018 and had a 4 year CPO warranty then that warranty would expire in 2022 and I'd say you have free supercharging since CPO vehicles didn't start to have free supercharging removed until mid-2019.

@ElectricTechAdventures3 жыл бұрын
I don't know the brands of my car seats off the top of my head, but I can go look if you really need that detail. They're somewhat random seats we've acquired over the years from various sources and they're pretty typical in features and width. Our oldest daughter is now in a booster seat and since that uses the vehicle seat belt we ended up getting a seat belt extension to make it easier for her to reach the receiver since the Tesla one is embedded in the seat and hard for her to see. The other two we can use either the vehicle seat belt to pass through them and secure them or we can use the three point straps and anchors of the Tesla then the child is strapped into the car seat using the straps that come with it. I hope that helps answer your question.

@ElectricTechAdventures2 жыл бұрын
Cross country driving to me implies freeway driving at 80-85 MPH. At that speed we can go around 200 miles fully charged to about 10% remaining (using 90% of the battery). The rated range on our S with 121k miles is 251 miles. If we drive slowly that's maybe possible but 225 is more realistic. We drove a 4,500 mile trip from UT to TN back in April and I recorded a time lapse of the entire trip, driving and charging. When I publish that video it'll help show the capabilities of our vehicle and the significant variance that is the answer to your question.

I have a number of videos on my channel here showing us going on various road trips and I make these videos to show what is possible with this new technology that is electric cars. Keep it in mind of course that ours is 7 years old now and the newer vehicles can road trip even better because of faster charge speeds, larger batteries and more efficient motors.

@@benkanobe7500 you might find this playlist interesting where we drove from Utah to Florida and back through Arizona. This is a long video series of each travel day being its own video. I have several other road trips that I have recorded that I need to edit still and get published. There are a couple of short time lapses on this trip especially closer to the end showing the energy screen while we drive which I think is really interesting myself. Some of my upcoming videos will have far more of those time lapses. Our 5,883 Mile Tesla Family Road Trip from Utah to Florida: kzbin.info/aero/PLhYygFlMh_bcpzs2UjOcnGQujT0ldapK2

Very nice video, lot of info. Tesla is very helpfull. I wonder if you would be even as happy when this car was out of warrenty. Some part did breake down, and they are expansive. And they broke down quit fast. The door handle is about $ 1000,-, i would not be happy.

Our Model S will be out of warranty in the next couple of months as it's currently at just over 97,000 miles. I'm confident that something will break once it's out of warranty because we anticipate keeping this car for many more years and likely 100s of thousands of miles more. A any vehicle will wear down and components break over time. The main question is will it cost more to repair than a comparable internal combustion engine (ICE) over time. There are some specific costs to an ICE vehicle like oil changes, and all the maintenance that's involved with the engine that a Tesla doesn't have. Conversely as you bring up the Model S has pop out door handles which are a weakness. Incidentally all 4 of our door handles have been replaced with the upgraded components that will hopefully fail less often. That being said when another door handle fails in the future I'm not going to pay Tesla to do it. I'll just go get the correct gear (I know what the part is that fails) and replace it myself. I've watched the mobile service rangers replace my handles twice and I know I can do it and I've seen others on KZbin do it. I know I won't always be able to repair things on the Model S myself and I'm prepared to have to pay for that, and I expect those repairs to cost less in the long run than the constant costs and occasional repairs of a gasoline vehicle.

Did you have to register the car in California? As you bought it in California?
@ElectricTechAdventures4 жыл бұрын
I had to pay California's sales tax, but Tesla registered it for me in Utah and my Utah license plats were mailed to me around 6 weeks after purchase. I ended up having to pay a couple hundred dollars more in sales tax than I would have if I'd purchased it in Utah, but if they'd shipped it to me to Utah they would have charged an absurd $2,000 so it was very worth flying out there, paying more in sales tax and driving it home than having it shipped to Utah.

you got this model s second hand?

Yes, I purchased it used (certified pre-owned) from Tesla. I made a video about that here kzbin.info/www/bejne/oGOTY2d9rsiUY5o

Whats CPO mean? I see this alot and I am confusion
@ElectricTechAdventures4 жыл бұрын
CPO = Certified Pre Owned. Elon Musk doesn't like the term either so he said Tesla would start to go by the term "used" which they've now done. If you go to Tesla.com/used that works whereas tesla.com/cpo no longer works.

What's the point when this guy gets free supercharging which is totally unattainable for 99% of people.
@ElectricTechAdventures3 жыл бұрын
How is free supercharging unattainable for so many? Just last week I saw a used Model S with free supercharging for sale in my area and I know there's others elsewhere. Regardless Teslas are far cheaper to operate than comparable gasoline vehicles even if you're paying for supercharging on road trips.
