...if you want to put oil in every 5 miles and the timing chain tensioner has been changed, otherwise steer clear. Petrol versions that is, they are so unreliable, diesels are okay.

The vibration may be coming from the tyres, it's a Scirocco thing apparently that warps the treads to a "stepped" feel.

I always liked the Scirocco, they did the old original Scirocco honour. Friend of mine has a 2011" 200 bhp + Scirocco and it's an absolute screamer. The interior is quite simple but timeless to me.

I ran a mk2 scirocco for a couple of years and that had a 2l 16v engine that put out 136 bhp as I recall which was both flexible but for the day, pokey. I'm surprised with all the bolt-ons that your 1.4l had it didn't deliver more grunt. My last 3 cars have had frameless windows (i.e. because I bought 2 door cars) and I completely agree with your comment.

I have the 2.0 TDi 170 DSG, no DPF, EGR Off, custom exhaust, running stage 1.5 engine and stage 1 DSG. On dyno 229 (stock turbo). To be honest, its a little rocket!

Stage 1.5? No DPF, so new Downpipe... That is Stage 2, call it as you want. Stages 1+ or 1.5 are just marketing, as soon as you change a Downpipe you are in Stage 2, be it hard or soft, deal with it. That fucking "1+" is just a trick to put a nice dyno graph and then start the pub chat talking about your "Stage 1" (sometimes the + gets lost somewhere in the process) givng same power than the other poor guy in his Stage 2, and thus hinting at one chiptuner being better than the other. Bullshit.

those are big cars and im not sure if they are 3 door hatch or trying to be coupe like the scirocco. i test drove a 1.4 turbo and my scirocco feels better and more compact. mine is 122hp 1.4 and the astra i drove was apparently meant to be the 140hp, but a quick reg check showed it as the 120hp. either way it was rubbish. dont know how small the turbos are used on either car, but the astra felt flat and gutless. it didnt handle as well either. but they are nice looking cars though. i am glad i chose the rocco of the gtc.

Had one in 2010 loved it yes it was a diesel 2.0 but it went like a rocket lot of torque for a smallish car. I thought it was really practical the back seats dropped and it was deceptively practical great all round package. It did make you want to be a bit naughty though cheeky sporty car (even the diesel)..

@@Alexandru-T. - my was sweet as a nut, serviced when required and had 113k on the clock when I part exchanged it - only major issue I had was the ABS unit failed @ 83k but apart from that my was good as gold. I have an A7 now but still look back with a smile when I see the 'Rocco' on the road.

If it’s a 125 bhp there is no super charger. That would be the 160, the 122 and 125 models only have the one turbo and are 10x more reliable than the 160.

I'm puzzled by the fashion for black alloys. Unless you're up close, it just looks like someone's run off with the wheel-trims from the steelies because they weren't fastened on with the standard white zip-ties. I'm sure the 'bottle-opener' is there to click into the seat-belt latch if you're not wearing it, to stop the alarm buzzer. The bottle-opener is just a handy bonus.

Just to correct you. You drove the EA211 1.4 TSI 125bhp. It is only turbocharged and has a belt = very reliable. The EA111 twingcharged engines were 1.4 TSI 160hp. These were chain driven and had a lot of problems. Like A LOT

I have a mini with bmw diesel engine, but honestly i am over that car and started looking into sciroccos. And I am the person who doesn't like frameless doors :D and I am used to the vibrating as well (mini - big engine in small car). Flat bottom with sporty feel / flat drive is probably not good for me either. Thanks for this review, maybe I will go back to looking into golfs, I don't want to make the same mistakes twice.

These were never updated that much, is the interior from a Mk5 or Mk6 golf? they look very dated inside. Even the 'R' model had an engine from a previous generation did it not? I guess like the Corrado this was a bit of a parts bin special. Pretty sure that the 1.4 supercharged/turbo charged engine was also famous for having issues.

Re: Sciroccos in the US - I'm guessing VW makes more money on Golfs than they theoretically would on Scirrocos. Not sure if VW builds Golfs at any of their North American plants, but I'm assuming the Scirroco would've had to have been imported, eating into the profit margin. VW may also have been concerned about the Scirroco eating into Beetle or GTI sales. Americans don't buy hatchbacks or two-doors - the two-door Golf and GTI have both been gone from these shores for a few years - so VW probably would've sold less of them than even the Beetle (which has also been canceled here).

I have always like the styling of his model and in particular the ones with the blue or lime green paintwork. Would buy one? I have seriously considered it but I found them a little low but to be quite honest that is the only fault I had. They look a very nicely styled car. Very popular in China also with the younger crowd but I will not go into that here.
