Although I bought the game and really adore the art style and gameplay, I can completely understand why some people were put off by the initial controversy. A lot of people are mentioning the backlash the devs got, but not really what initiated the backlash to begin with. The devs made promises to their community that used Steam and weren’t fully transparent with their exclusivity deal with Epic until after it was pretty much finalized. The devs left them in the dark for much of that process and once they expressed they were upset, the devs brushed it off and even mocked them in a really immature blog post. Of course this doesn’t justify death threats or the harassment they got online, but that’s mostly why many people are still wary of the devs. At the end of the day, if you are unbothered by the controversy and have a high interest in the game’s concept, then go for it.

I was there when the controversy happened as I was excitedly stalking the game and it left a REALLY bad taste in my mouth. It was not because of the Epic store exclusivity like people who came late thought, but because of how the devs VERY RUDELY mocked their supporters and basically called everyone stupid because some fans were upset about the sudden change to epic. I honestly didn't care if they went exclusive, I would've just bought it there or waited for it to be ported, but the NASTINESS of the devs showed me what kind of people they were, which is a far far difference from how cute the graphics looked. I decided not to buy the game. I spoke to my 2 farming-game-loving friends after, and they were super pissed about the dev's words too. TLDR: It's not the exclusivity but how the devs responded: RUDELY.

The controversy is a bit old so I don’t recall all the details but I’ll do my best. Basically the Devs behind this team had promised it would have a release on Steam though they went back on that and made it exclusive to the Epic Game Store launcher. Normally this wouldn’t be a big issue but the devs weren’t very transparent as to why they did this, furthermore they also mocked anyone who disagreed with the decision saying they where being entitled and the like. They’d say anyone who didn’t agree with the decision wasn’t a part of community. Overall not a very good look for the devs as many supported it believing it would be on Steam. A KZbinr calles YongYea made a pretty in depth video on it or you want to know more, should be one of the first results if you search “Ooblets Drama”. As for me personally the drama has made me have mixed feelings about the game. It definitely looks cute and enjoyable but don’t really want to support the devs due to their behavior.

I appreciate the ease of the game. I have played a lot of cozy games, or farm/fight style Runefactory or Stardew valley, that are intended to lean into softer aspects like farming and developing relationships I always feel this nagging anxiety of having a limited amount of time to get things done. I like being able to fully explore and entire area each day, visit all the shops, harvest everything, talk to everyone and make several laps around the area vs having too much on my plate and running around and feeling like I can't accomplish anything. I already feel like that IRL with having ADHD I definitely don't enjoy that aspect in gaming. I'm glad the combat is on the simpler end, sometimes it's just nice to play things that occupy our time and interest but don't require a skillset. I'm undecided still if I will pick up the game, but I definitely appreciate the video it gave me a deeper look and sold me on a lot of elements i was unsure of.

Hi! I bought ooblets IMMEDIATELY after watching his video and I'd definitely recommend getting it! It's an absolute blast. Interestingly, I feel the opposite when it comes to these games and time, I hate long drawn out days because eventually I will get bored and run out of things to do. I love fast times because it makes every day feel useless--today I'll do some foraging, tomorrow I'll hand out gifts, the day after is dedicated to cooking, etc. That way every time I go to bed I feel fulfilled and like I accomplished something. So when Josh said that the time goes slow that put me off real bad, but I bought it anyway because I need a chill game that's not grindy eventually. As it turns out, this game is pretty much perfect for anyone on either sides of the spectrum! The days are long but that's because there are SO many things to do, I'm probably 20 hours in (too afraid to know the exact hour, I'm already ashamed of how much I've been playing this game for hours straight) and there is so. much. content. SO much flexibility. And just overall fun as hell! You should buy it, it's very cute and in my eyes might have some longevity if you're the type to just unwind and play for a couple hours. The devs said there's like 60-70 hours of gameplay if you play at your own pace, and there's definitely replayability so this game will hold me on for a long, long time I think!

Definitely agree! Especially considering there is kind of a platform war situation among some PC gamers (Epic vs Steam), I find it hard to believe certain parts of the rumours. But I also believe developers should be transparent, especially if they receive monetary support from the community. In the end though, everybody has to make their own choice, we all have different boundaries for what is acceptable.

I honestly don't know why the "controversy" would make anyone rethink buying this game. Death threats are never acceptable and the developers were right to say that a big segment of the gaming community is toxic, as proven by the tantrum a huge number of people threw over them giving exclusivity to Epic. If that's the "controversy" in question, I don't think it's any reason to not support this game. Apart from this though I really recommend Ooblets to anyone looking for a cozy, cute and funny game. Simply because some people draw lines. If for example dev behaved bad too while disregarding their loyal supporters using toxity or other things as excuse to not be transparant & rude while treating their upset supporters like a joke for their own screw up as they've broken promises, yet were sponsored/got money via patreon this will make people question whether this is a cashgrab, why they even needed their money etc. considering their behaviour was disappointing it could excalate if not handled well. I think some are/were upset the devs didn't even sincerely apologise either as all it was mostly blaming toxic people as an excuse for their behavior. It's not simply due them ging back on their word & choosing Epic exclusivity. At least that's the gist I got from this. You need to understand some devs get massive support like not only monthly donations/sponsors but even promoting to friends etc. so backstabbing/disregarding & being rude to those supporters is a no go, this is what'll make people some gamers who've had similar experiences rethink. At least I would considering I backed a game before it made me feel like lucky things went semi ok I can only imagine how those people felt. No decent person condones toxic behavior, with death threats etc. Idk. why a genuine & true fan'd do that in the 1st place no matter how angry/upset it's quite immature to do. But the dev admitted he said stuff in a joking matter or so & expected people to get it I think that's also where things went wrong? Tldr: The devs gaslighted people & kept their supporters in the dark while being rude afterwards while handling the aftermath, that's what upset people. Not that they weren't victims, but it's not ok to use that as excuse for bad behaviour of themselves either.
@KonDragon0082 жыл бұрын
For me, it's one of those "If I have to contact customer support with a problem or suggestion, will they tell me 'QQ more' since they already proved they cannot handle criticism? Will they have secret updates since they have proven they aren't transparent with their players?" Back when it first came out, the controversy steered me clear of the game because what happened was that the devs promised certain things for their backers, then without any warning took an Epic exclusive deal. When people got understandably upset and asked (at the time, most were still being polite) if they would be compensated, that's when the devs started to call folks "entitled gamers" (among other insults). This then got the fans angry, and a vocal minority responded to their toxicity with their own toxicity. Especially considering how many similar games there are to this, I'll just take my business elsewhere. I decided that during the controversy, and I still hold to that opinion.

I remember the controversy with this game, so my (personal) short answer is: No. I will not be getting this game; ever. How the devs responded to the (expected) outrage of their fans was disgusting. I don't condone how some fans responded to the devs after that (the threats and whatnot), but I remember being absolutely horrified with how the devs treated their fans. Even if there wasn't controversy, the second a game becomes "Epic Exclusive" I take it off my wishlist. Even if it releases (usually around a year, or more) later on other platforms, I still refuse to support that level of gatekeeping. I'm still not thrilled that Nintendo releases their main-brand games like that (as Xbox and Playstation typically also release their games for PC these days), so for a game store to throw money at (typically indie) developers to get exclusive rights to distribute the game...it doesn't sit right with me.
@KonDragon0082 жыл бұрын
@Meow No gaming platform is squeaky clean; Steam doesn't properly moderate the games on its store (you are correct about that, and it's something I hate about Steam) so we wind up with trash getting on the storefront, while Epic throws money at developers to get exclusive rights and still has problems with their shopping cart. Honestly, all someone is doing when comparing Steam and Epic are weighing two evils; same with any corporation. I'm not disagreeing, but I don't like the idea of innocent people being told they "got what they deserved", in dealing with toxic devs, just because they use Steam. The people not involved in the debacle do/did not deserve to be sneered at just because they use one evil instead of the other evil. As for the devs of Ooblets themselves...their initial reaction was to be rude to just the people who were upset that they lied to their backers. That's when the "toxic crybabies" part happened, and as a response to their attitude was when a vocal minority started to actually get toxic towards the devs. I don't condone the "fans" who threatened the devs, but I also won't support devs who respond with the equivalent of "QQ more" when people raised legitimate concerns. How people respond to negative feedback says a lot about their strength of character and who they are. Some get upset/depressed, some laugh/get amused, and some get toxic. These devs got toxic (which just perpetuated the more caustic fans to respond in turn), and I refuse to support that kind of behavior.
