Should You Buy Resident Evil 4 in 2022? (Review)

Being my first Resident Evil game, one of my favorite games for all time. Especially beating the game unlocks other weapons like infinite rocket launcher, and beating Separate Ways unlocks Chicago Typewriter, a machine gun with infinite ammo, and playing the game again with "New Round" which lets you start all over again but with all your equipment, and the special costumes that have quirks too, one that puts Leon in his RPD Outfit from RE2 and gives him a defence boost, and another one which puts Ashley in a knights armor that makes her immune to all attacks and she's heavy for enemies to pick up. So many unlockables and many ways to play RE4

I'll never understand why people think a game is automatically going to be bad, just because it's older. There's a treasure trove of games waiting for you, if you look far back. I'm glad you enjoyed this so much and gave it a go. Also, Separate Ways was an unlockeable, as DLC didn't exist back then.

I still remember this game! I sadly didn't play the original version, I got the remake alongside my new PC! It was one of the most amazing games in it's time, It will definitely have a special place in my heart. By the way, The new thumbnail style is amazing!

This game is a true survival shooter, i remeber i use to save my ptas to upgrade my weapons and buy new attach cases, i was stuck on a fight with two garradors but somehow managed to defeat them, i don't know how much time i died in RE4, this game is very challenging if you are playing for first time.

One of my favourite games of all time, the memories playing this with my cousin. We always would mutter "moody daffodil" because that's what we thought the Los ganados were saying haha. Excited for the remake ! Hope they keep the cheesiness and Leon's character mostly the same

Resident Evil 4 was released when I was a frosh in college. It encouraged me to skip some of my classes to go home early and play it on my PS2. Played the main game several times over several years and was still enjoying it. The merchant was my favorite character haha...

Massively recommend playing Resi 1 remake! The visuals are just amazing, as are the soundtrack and extra content. If you enjoy the originals then this is a must.

I've been thinking about it alot, especially after the Remake announcement... REmake 2 was freaking amazing, but i had to play it that way because the original is just not backwards compatible on modern hardware...I've never played RE4, but i know that it's considered a timed classic and one of the best RE games ever. Kinda torned because i really wanna play it and the HD remaster looks really good, but the Remake experience was just so amazing that i feel like it would kinda ruin the first feel for me - Even tho it's not gonna be the exact same game.

Honestly I had the exact same dilemma so I totally understand. I think the games still look quite different especially in tone. The original is very action campy, with lots of fun wackiness, while the Remake looks a lot more grounded, dark, and horror focused like the REmake 2. I believe both are gonna be worth experiencing and after playing the original it's made me even more excited for the Remake to see what's different and everything in top of the line modern graphics. I personally suggest the original but I totally understand if you'd rather wait for the remake.

I’m on my 5th play through of re4 and it’s still great! As a fan of your channel I definitely recommend re5 but 6 I’ll leave up to you as I have mixed feelings on it.Also Sheva Alomar’s AI is a nightmare

Colmillo means "canine" in Spanish. The image that pops in your mind should be like a "sharp tooth" and Leon pronounced Louis the English way. The others pronounces it in the Spanish pronunciation.

You should do a video on Shenmue in 2022, it's the grand father of open world games and without it we would never have gotten classics like Bully or RDR2 as they use practically the same open world systems. It was the first game to ever include npcs with set routines and a full day and night cycle which changes gameplay, super impressive for 1999. Do check it out!

I think the re4 haters are the ones that original picked up the series in the 90s. I did so after being a fan of the zombie horror genre. I've since lost interest in zombie horror and picked up re4 with a fresh set of eyes. Re4 was essentially a reboot of the series and it is a brilliantly designed game. The level design is airtight and things like the contextual melee and true third person controls (nowadays 3ps are first person shooters where you can see your avatar) give it a unique gameplay that has never been matched.

I recently bought this game on sale from the ps store, and I absolutely loved it. At first I thought the tank controls were going to turn my mood off for it, but I stuck around and I'm glad I did. The gameplay, the lines, the story, the mgs style radio talk between leon and saddler/hannigan, the mauser, ganados and all that jazz. I completed all the shooting ranges with all the figures, and got all trophies even tho there isnt that much, it was still very fun. Especially new game+. I give this game a 9 out of 10, my only real complaint was the IT boss, that guy was bullet sponge as hell. I think this game is worth getting in any year as long as you haven't played it before, and it would be a nice game to go back and replay. Very hyped for the remake

To save ammo against that boss, just go into that battle with a launcher. Once you are off the platform and on the ground, he takes 1 hit with the launcher plus 1 hit with anything else. Yes, even a single bullet out of your weakest gun.

On paper RE 4 sounds like a terrible idea for a shooter, you can't move and shoot, tank controls, enemies are damage sponges, majority of them have melee attacks, move rather slowly when they're approaching you and there are QTEs, yet despite all this its one of the greatest games ever. Atleast in my book.

No resident evil game since has balanced combat so well. It comes down to not being able to sidestep. This is a design choice that will never be made again but it's the secret sauce. You can't easily sidestep projectiles so you have to plan ahead to dodge or learn to shoot them out of the air...I prefer to skillfully shoot them. Enemies also track you from across the map...there's no stealth here. They also swarm you but the balancing element is that they slow down and measure you up close so you can either switch to a crowd control weapon or skillfully headshot an enemy and trigger a contextual melee. But you have to be careful because stagger animations can put them out of reach or another enemy can rush you changing your priority. The plagas enemies are tanky and have longer range but don't run so you can corral them all in one spot and kill them with a flash grenade. Some people designing this game really knew what they were doing. It's not like sidestep was a foreign concept. This nuanced game design is also not found in modern games which are just vehicles for voice acted cutscenes.

I certainly bought it in 2022. It was my first time playing it. I had heard of it's legendary reputation throughout the years though. I finally played it for myself and I have mixed feelings about it. At first it bored the shit out of me. It was mostly how brown the beginning few levels are. It's visually uninteresting and I still think so. I started to enjoy it once I made it to the lake monster fight and it turned night. And once I got to the castle section I started to really enjoy it with all the enemy variety. Then I got to the island and hated everything about it except fighting the regenerators in the labs. Overall I think it's okay. Wildly overrated. But I can tell why people like it. My favorite thing about the game are the characters but Leon in particular is a treasure. He's such a snarky dork I couldn't help but root for him. He's got some good comebacks and one liners. Just the fact that the game is aware of how ridiculous it is is charming. I really enjoyed the inventory system. I'm surprised they dropped it after this game cus it worked so well. But I think the gameplay is pretty clunky. I got over the tank controls pretty quickly but the aiming took some getting used to. It's cus you use the stick to move the laser around the screen instead of being in the center and you move the camera around. I never grew to like it, just tolerated it. And my biggest complaint with the game is that it's too damn long. I think my playthrough was like 12 or 13 hours. If it's cut down to 7 or 8 hours in the remake I'll enjoy it alot more. These kinds of game beg for 2nd playthroughs but I absolutely did not want to with how long it took the first time coupled with the huge swaths of sections that I didn't like. Like I said the game is fine overall but I wouldn't play it over something like Dead Space which does everything RE 4 does but much better. It was a fun distraction though the couple weeks I played it.

Bro... please for the love of the gaming gods. Never ever compare Leon from the RE2 "Remake" to the canon mainline Resident Evil Leon! He's not the real Leon. Hes very weird and strange and developed by a different dev team with a modernized (key word) "remake" not "remaster" design in mind. Only reference the actual RE2 psone version to the RE4 if you want a genuine character arc comparison. Re2 original is where you wanna play to get your lore. And character knowledge.

I agree tbh. I think remake 2 is better than original 2 but yeah Leon is very different. Whereas Leon in the remake got scared by a lot of the enemies, original 2 Leon was like “Yeah is that all you got? Let’s go!” He even already had the badass one liners with deep voice, “Get down!” “Hey, it’s up to us to take out umbrella.”

I think a big reason why games were ‘better’ back in the day is because developers were much more limited with what they could do, so to make the game the best it could be they had to really put in the hard work, love and care. These days, I think developers have so much amazing technology at their hands that they end up trying to do too much, filling games with unneeded stuff that just results in a bloated and often janky experience, since there isn’t enough manpower being put into refinement. It also goes without saying that gaming has become very corporate and is now ruled by deadlines and the expectations of publishers, shareholders and such, which means developers just don’t get the time to properly finish games. I strongly believe that game developers these days are just as passionate, but the people they work for and the whole gaming world has become so competitive and money-hungry. What do you guys think?

Well said I agree, I believe every industry thats successful eventually becomes corporate and usually these large corporations are greedy and their target audience shifts to shareholders instead of the general public, however just like anything mainstream there are great independent companies who share that same passion thats why I love indie games and movies

I fully recommend playing RE1R, RE3R, RE5 and RE6, but if you're going to play RE5 and RE6 you should play them coop. It feels like they were made to play coop and they play much better when they're played with someone else since the AI isn't the greatest especially in RE5.

I never played Resident Evil since it was too violent and mature for me as a kid, but I'd always heard Resident Evil 4 was an amazing game and I wanted to play it but never had the Gamecube or a port of it. I do think I'm gonna buy the game itself as my first Resident EVil game after becoming quite entranced by the lore. Might even buy the Collector's edition.
