Do you own any of the quarterly dividend payers? What are your thoughts?

For British stocks, I own only M&G and BAE Systems that pay quarterly dividends, but some of my american investments like JP Morgan also pay dividends. Like monthly payments, I believe they are a great way of compounding.

i have most of these stocks listed here ,but sold Diversified Energy awhile ago , people tend to think investing in the UK stocks is domestic only with regards the FTSE 100 but are international and so obtain their income from all around the world, HSBC being a prime example, of course some sectors do better than others ,the USA SP 500 has a lot of very big tech companies, and their market is huge compared to ours, its said Apple alone is worth more than the entire FTSE 100 combined :} you have to have very deep pockets to buy some of these American tech giants as a single share but fortunately you can by fractions or just buy an ETF , great video thanks.

I like the idea of dividends and quarterly ones are certainly appealing. I think for me the video helps to highlight how you make your money when you buy. A great company could still be a lousy investment if one pays too much. Also important not to just jump into a share because of the dividend or its yield. An idea for you perhaps on a future video if there is any data about average persons portfolio return Vs the index itself. I imagine a lot of people trying to pick stocks aren't actually beating VHYL or IUSA for eg

Serious, genuine question here! I’m very much in the early stages of this investing journey, literally a couple of months and thanks to a strong second half of April and first half of May my portfolio - all UK - is worth more than I put in. Now the election has been called, could more experienced investors tell me, is this likely to have a negative effect on the value of the portfolio because of ‘uncertainty’? Should people be considering sheltering funds into the ISA side of the 212 account until the election is settled? Will it, ultimately be better just to westher any potential short term storm and carry on? Interested in peoples’ views.
@TheCompoundingInvestor5 ай бұрын
Not investment advice of course but my take on this is that the market always climbs a ‘wall of worry’. However over the long term, records are broken and new highs are reached. Over the short term there is volatility for sure, and this can be quite dramatic. At the start of the pandemic my own portfolio fell from 230k to 170k in what seemed like a matter of days. I carried on investing however because I’m in it for the long term (decades). New money going in was now buying shares at reduced prices and I was getting more for each pound. When the market recovered therefore I made a lot more money than if the market had not crashed and had just slowly ticked upwards over those years. So therefore as far as investing goes I actually welcome crashes in share prices. It’s not always an easy mindset to have because the short term shocks can be massive and unpredictable. In the 1970s the U.K. market crashed 70% in a single year. You have to ask yourself if this happened would you carry on investing as if nothing had happened. So investing really should be for the long term but it’s not a mindset we all have naturally. I’ve done a video on how I cope with crashes below if you are interested.. How I Invest During Crashes and Recessions kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqG1qottntWibJY

I am SO disappointed with a stocks and shares isa. I researched and split the money in to 3 pies on T212. After 2months, the shares show a 2.5% return. I had £5 in dividends. I did a general investment account to have a play and put £300 in. Those pies have similar shares of much lower value, but the return is over 11%! I don't get it. Why is the return on the ISA so low as I could have got 5.2% in a cash ISA.

A stocks and shares ISA should not affect the performance of your shares. It should make no difference apart from the fact that you don’t need to pay tax on capital gains or dividends

The problem with the FTSE 100 Index is it is only UK companies, that make up around 4% of the world index. This gives you alot of geographic risk. You are always far better investing in a global index like the MSCI World, which returned 66.23% over the 5 year period. More than double that of the FTSE 100. £10,000 invested in the FTSE 100 would have given you £3,250 return against £6,623 from the MSCI World.
@TheCompoundingInvestor5 ай бұрын
Always good to diversify and yes I do invest in an all world index as well as the S&P500 these days. The FTSE 100 actually earns on average 80% of its revenue not from the UK but from abroad. Many of the companies are global giants. The FTSE 250 on the other hand is very UK focused. I have very little indeed invested in the 250 index.

The reason for this is that the site I'm using to get the data from does not show dividends from when the company was known as "Royal Dutch Shell" which was around 3 years ago. Shell used to have two different listings RDSA and RDSB, now there is only one listing "SHEL". I basically would have to show 3 different graphs to show the historical dividends which might be a bit confusing.
