Thanks Cheeky. I agree with most of what you say except the trends that you provide at the end. It is a flawed comparison. You are comparing apples (those who go to postdoc because they are not competitive enough to land their dream job) to oranges (those who land a job directly because they were more competitive in the first place). The latter group are likely to get much better salaries anyway. The question is whether a postdoc helps the former group to catch up. And the paper you present shows that yes, they do catch up. Thanks for sharing useful insights anyway.

maysam rabbani, careful not to make assumptions about a PhD's value based on whether they decided to do a postdoc or to go to industry. ​@@CheekyScientist your data shows that doing a postdoc is correlated to lower income, but not causing it. Because the study has a clear selection bias, it cannot be read causally. That is why reading it as "doing a postdoc harms income" is incorrect.
