I've made the jump to a 29er this year. Came from a 26er, so it was a bit difficult for me at the beggining. I've got used to it now, but it definitely rides differently. I think the biggest difference for me is that it gains much more speed on steep descends as my 26er did. I need to use the brakes way more because of that, which can make them overheat on longer downhills. Never had this problem on the 26er.

REV IT85 so well put, “the swamp of standards” so perfect for this industry. I always feel the tinge of being left behind with every new product that comes out. As if my 6,000.00 bike is not good enough any more or worse yet replacement parts are going to disappear. Forcing me to throw out my ride and be forced into a new one.

After watching a dozen of these comparison videos, I have made my decision. I'm just gonna ride and stop splitting hairs. It seems that everyone needs a bike that throughout the course of one trail, you would need to switch your bike out about 5 times to get that perfect ride. So here's the philosophical concept of the day. There is no perfect ride, jump, flow or climb. It's just you, and your bike, and a dream.

I was a long time hold out to change from 26. When I was on 29 I always felt the front end was too tall. Decided to go 27.5 and still kind of feel the front end is y’all for my liking but not nearly as bad as the 29er. As a former XC racer I’m still not on board with 29er... maybe one day. But not anytime soon. 27.5 is where I’m at now.

Nope. People tend to forget that 27.5 is actually 650b and as such is only 25mm bigger than 26. The industry started calling it 27.5 to identify the standard as halfway between the existing 26 and 29 size . 26=559MM, 650b(27.5)=584mm and 29=622mm.

29ers do NOT have 28 inch rims! You are probably confusing them with 700c which are commonly called 28 inch wheels. They have the same erto of 622 mm (so actually about 24 inches)but wheel size and rim size are not the same. Fit a spindly road tyre to a 700c rim and you get a diameter of around 28 inches, got a much larger mtb tyre to a 29er rim and you get an outside diameter of 29 inches.

My first MTB was a hard tail 29er (Trek X Caliber 8). It was ok. Then I got a FS 27.5 (YT Capra) and that's when I found out how much fun MTB really is. Easy more nimble and dynamic. Any 29 benefit such as rolling over bigger obstacles with ease is negated by how sluggish they handle, and frankly how boring they make riding. Definitely not going back to 29 again. IMHO of course. 😁

I love 29 having changed from 27.5 last year. Personal preference but I feel for most riders who aren’t seriously good, the extra rolling speed and smoothness will overcome any of the marginal drawbacks and result in the best/fastest riding experience. Also speed = height in the jumps too and I find that I carry more speed and make trails flow better with the bigger wheels. Granted a better rider wouldn’t need the speed boost!

Also agree. Not just GMBN, but I've noticed a few other sponsored bike bloggers "trying out" 29ers from their sponsors and half hearted attempts at making it sound like it's just as good as 27.5 (which it probably is, just not as fun).

1.) can we get like an hour-long montage of the guys riding? It’s always so mesmerizing 😆. 2.) I’m barely over 5’ and just upgraded my fork and wheelset, going from 27.5 to 29 and I absolutely love it. Took 2 seconds to get used to maneuvering the bigger wheel, but the rolling speed is so worth it! (Size S Trek Fuel full sus trail bike on a variety of eastern U.S. trails - it’s super versatile!) 3.) Isabeau Courdurier is just a smidge shorter than I am and even she is now riding (and winning everything!) on a 29er. Hard to argue that!

My regular bike is a giant trance 27.5 trail bike. I have tried 29er a few times. I didn't see much of an advantage except the confidence of marginally better in avoiding pedal strikes and better rolling over rocks and roots. To be honest, it doesn't really matter to me and I'm quite fine with 27.5. I'm changing my bike soon and picking up another giant trance 27.5 again!

29ers are the best, i build up my Sentinel Enduro last Winter and was confident on it after the first run, i rode it on some local trails with some snow on them and noticed the grip. Later i got my 29er V10 DH bike for sure this thing is insane but i feel soo good on the big wheels, you roll over stuff so much easier and faster. You need to lean the bike more into corners and maybe be a little bit more active but soo good to ride love it

Started with a 27.5, then switched to HT 29er and much better quality bike, rode it for 5 years and just bought a FS 29er for riding much more tech rides. I think bike sizes, brands, etc. are subject to thousands of variables dependent on the person and trail conditions. What I have found is there are hundreds of options on bikes that make a difference and the goal is to find what fits the person and makes for a more enjoyable ride, after all that is why we do it! Bike therapy! Thanks for the vid!

Directly after Launch beginning of the year I ordered a Strive CF 8.0. after the first ride i sent it straight back to canyon, since the bike was not very agile and fun to ride (at least for me. This bike is designed to race, not to play with). Also i exepected the shapeshifter to make more of a difference. Couple of days later I bought a Spectral CF 9.0 and I‘m super happy with it. this bike is to me much more fun!

The 27.5 vs 29er debate never gets old. It’s hard to ignore the EWS and DH pros winning on 29ers. All that aside, unless your geo and suspension is dialed in, anything you’re riding will feel subpar. Wheel diameter is a distant second to a well sorted bike. Enjoyed the video guys.
