I left virgin media in 2015 because of horrendous price rises and customer services ive been lucky enough to have new fiber lines laid by Grain broadband now I get 900mbs up and download for £30 pm virgin media is finished in our town since city fibre and grain broadband.

Good to hear!! I think Virgin will lose every town/city that gets an alternative provider, their reliability and lack of customer service will make them go extinct (I hope).

Just left Virgin, gone to Three 5g broadband. 800 down 150 up at a fraction of the price. £20 pound a month. No antenna, dish or cable connection needed. Perfect for the average user.

@@ThisBrownGeek No downtime so far 3 weeks in. To be fair to Virgin I found them to be very reliable in terms of service. However in terms of cost they were terrible, forever upping the price. Always having to cancel them every 18 months to haggle a better deal. The Three 5g router is great but you need to place it near a window, a window sill is best of all. The transmitter tower is at the end of my street about 200 meters away so the signal is always strong. For £20 a month (first 3 months free) I could not be happier. For someone like you who needs really fast upload speeds as well as download it may not be ideal except as a back up service as you said.

I started an 18 month Virgin Media broadband contract 3 months ago. Today I recevied a letter letting me know that my monthly price will go up by 8.8% from next month in line with their terms and conditions. Appalling tactics. They reel in customers with an apparent low monthly price only to increase it 3 months after the contract started.

I had unreliable virgin broadband for years, no matter how many new routers they sent or how many “tweaks” or adjustments they made which they insured would fix the problem it didn’t. This went on for around 5 years, they finally arranged to send an engineer 12 months ago, the engineer was here 3 minutes before he found there was a problem with the Virgin socket on the wall (where the fibre cable comes from) he fixed it in a matter of minutes & my 1 GIG Virgin broadband has been flawless since. Regardless, the fact it taken them so long to finally admit an engineer was needed I find outrageous! EDIT!! Forgot to mention the fault, internet would randomly drop out multiple times per day every day!
@ThisBrownGeek

Sounds like Virgin! 5 years of an intermittent fault is atrocious and clearly they won’t be refunding you part of what you paid in the 5 years of poor service. I will never go back to Virgin, honestly.

Virgin Media here 136Mb/s. Rock steady speed results, very good stability (when using Hub 3.0 as modem only ;D) and terrible after-sale service on all fronts. Cannot wait to leave them as soon as competition will cover my area by fiber optic connections. Cure for my connection hangs/drops was switch the Virgin Hub to "modem mode" and use own reliable router instead. Cheaper solution worth to try may be powercycling Virgin router every night (timed or smart power socket) but with own good and reliable router you will get benefit of more reliable Wifi and better coverage.

Not as of April 2024. Although they have invested a ton into newer coaxial kit on the backend, it’s still very poor. Went for the 1Gig package, cancelled 6 months in and paid off cancellation fee because I was getting weekly 1-3 second pauses, monthly outages for 5 minutes and 1 major outage where engineer had to come and put a signal filter on box end to reduce the signal. Virgin Media make you run hoops on rebooting router (pain if your in modem mode) and they don’t treat any outage as an outage till it’s been two days. Avoid for now. Wait till they replace kit with Fibre (some areas).

BT and Virgin are the top two ISPs that our users use to connect to our workplace VPN. It's always the Virgin customers that have the majority of the issues. The two current ISPs I currently avoid are Virgin Media and Vodafone. Vodafone because if your a work from home person, I've seen them throttling workplace VPNs. Soon as you change to a non VPN protocol the speeds are fine. I do wonder if they have some form of P2P detection and throttle and VPNs are getting classed in that. Virgin Media, is just not reliable enough. Maybe it'll get better once their new XGS PON hits more customers, but if their backbone doesn't improve then I'm guessing most issues will remain other than the ones caused by over subscription on DOCSIS.
@ThisBrownGeek
@ThisBrownGeek 11 ай бұрын
Yep, Virgin is 100% less reliable than BT. Fascinating what you said about Vodafone throttling when on VPN, that’s wild. I don’t have their broadband anymore otherwise I’d have tested it. Virgin Media really needs to improve - fast - otherwise I can see them losing all of their customers as soon as a reliable alternative is available in their operating areas.
@_Jonny_
@_Jonny_ 11 ай бұрын
Virgin Media also seem to be doing it as well, tested WireGuard, IKEv2, OpenVPN, all getting throttled soon as I changed to SSTP. I got 4-5 times the throughput, close to what I would expect for the VPN performance for the device they had during the testing. SSTP looks like HTTPS traffic, if you wasn't aware. With Vodafone, I did setup a NAT proxy on a server in UK OVH DC, used WireGuard to connect to that which redirected the traffic to the workplace VPN, and got much faster speeds. So the only difference then is the ISP. Going to OVH network they didn't throttle but did going to a business ISP. So strange goings on, and if you looked up the problem on Vodafone's forum people had said similar things and said they moved to another CityFibre ISP for example, and the throttle disappeared to expected levels. I'm guessing they assume ISP to ISP traffic on some what high/random port numbers is probably P2P, but if you doing the same connection and port, to a Datacentre is less likely to be P2P.

Just come out of contract with VM and am on the 1gig package with TV and phone (max package). The price went from £64 per month to about £160 per month. Rang to get better deal. Three ago using hours later the best they would offer was £87 per month. We never get 1gig best is usually 440mb during the day but through my employers VPN it can be 50 to 150mb and reliability drops off from about 3.30pm when schools let out. So looking for an alternative, possibly City Fibre as they are coming to our area or maybe EE as all our family mobile contracts are with them, or even considering Starlink. We tried dropping some of the TV Channels with VM as we hardly watch movies or the kids channels etc but they said we’d get better discounts with the bigger package! So, anyone got any reservations with City Fibre, EE, or Starlink?

£160 per month is insanity, wow. I suggest you move. Is Community Fibre available in your area? If so, I do recommend them. If not, then I'd say go with City Fibre. EE works on the BT network, so they likely won't be as fast as City Fibre. Starlink is amazing, but as it works via satellite and the initial cost is high, I would only recommend this if you are in to camping, or if a conventional ISP is not available in your area. I hope this helps, thank you for watching and for your comment. Do let us know what you end up doing.

@@ThisBrownGeek Oh thanks for clarifying on this. I'm from Manchester and my other options are BT, Sky, talk etc and they all use Openreach cable which only provides up to 12-30Mbps. Ah that’s unfortunate. The Openreach website does sometimes give you a timescale when you put your postcode in, so it’s worth checking. 5G routers are great sometimes - the best I have seen so far is the one from Three. I know 2-3 people who have one and it’s been really good. Again they don’t cover all areas but a postcode check on the Three website will tell you if you can get it or not. VM AND Openreach are building on my street this week so I expect to have VM offer services in the next month or two. Zen has been awesome, almost 0 downtime the last 9 years. If you are having an intermittent issue I would call Vodafone back and tell them it’s intermittent and that they need to send an engineer to check everything. Let me know how it goes!!

Great insight! I've wanted the faster speeds with Virgin since back in the days of NTL etc, but finally FTTP I believe is coming to my area soon via Openreach (only one whos doing it). I'm currently on Plusnet but thinking of possibly going for the 1.6gb line with EE, however II've got a feeling that there could be an issue. I am lead to believe that the router that EE supply you with has the standard 1Gbps LAN ports on it along with one socket for the WAN which I believe is connected to the ONT (apologies if I have got this wrong). The issue is that although 1.6Gbps will be going to the ONT, I have been told that the ports on the back of the router would bottleneck as they are 1Gbps ports. Can anyone please tell me if there are any routers out there that would allow the full 1.6Gbps over a single wired connection (i.e getting the full 1.6Gbps to say a PS5 or a PC)? Or if i did this wireless would I get the full 1.6Gbps over wifi? The 1.6Gbps will seem as overkill, however I am a software tester and need to download the applications quickly due to strict testing times when working from home. Any help/ advice would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks!

Do you live in a flat or a house? Virgin Media has wired up all the flats in our block and to my surprise, the 3 flats that already have had their full install done have had the fibre cable routed through a hole in the flat's door frame. Super ugly and awkward. Why would they not just go through the wall?

Gigabit internet is also offered through cable internet, which uses the same coaxial cables for standard cable internet and TV. Leveraging new DOCSIS 3.1 technology, cable internet service providers are able to offer up to 1 Gbps download speeds, but you’ll have to check on the upload speeds because they’ll be substantially slower than a fiber-optic connection. Fiber Internet has a speed capable range of 846 to 940 Mbps download and 792 to 880 Mbps upload for Gig Service Internet. Max speeds are wired speeds. Wi-Fi, actual and average speeds may vary. Fiber 1 Gig Max capable download speeds range from 846-1000 Mbps and upload speeds range from 792-1000 Mbps. Is that means Virgin scams people and selling coaxial as fibre ????
@ThisBrownGeek

Most new Virgin Media installations are fibre right to the premises, which is great. My parents had that, and it would still fall over 2-3 times a week.
