I had forgotten about this National Park. 2 1/2 hours wasn’t long to enjoy the park. Looks like a beautiful hike. Great tips.

The tone zone comment was the best nugget of info I got out of your video. I hadn't consider that, read or heard of the time zone factor anywhere else. 20 to 40 inches of rain primary summer is notable as well. Appreciate the video. Planning on going mid-August 2023 7-night backpack with my three sons.

First i'll admit my bias as I love Isle Royale, but imho you weren't there long enough to really have enjoyed the park. Backpacking isn't for everyone, but it's by far the best way to experience Isle Royale.
@LovingLifeHitchedUp

We agree that to truly experience the park you have to spend at least one night. That's why I said that when we return it has to be an overnight stay.

We had never heard of Isle Royale. We want to go check this out sometime. I love that there is this National Park that is so hard to get to that it is pristine and unseen by most people. We would probably want to bring a tent to camp overnight. Thanks for introducing us to Isle Royale!

Everyone can change the settings on their phone to prevent the phone from automatically changing time zones. I am surprised the Ranger does not cover that.

All of the logistics are what have kept us from visiting Isle Royle so far. When we go, we plan to take a ferry from Copper Harbor. I have a cousin who lives there so that probably works best for us. Thanks for sharing all of these details with us. Sorry about your phone changing time zones on you and the rain and everything. It has been such a wet spring!!! And we often deal with our phone changing to central time when we're near Lake Michigan. It's so bizarre. Congratulations on reaching 5,000 subs, though!!!

In 2005, I took the boat from Grand Portage to Windigo. I was one of 3 people on the boat. With only 2.5 hours there, I missed the boat back. I was completely unaware of the time zone crossing. I was so baffled, thinking I was at the dock early. Additionally, no one was at the ranger station. The mosquitoes were so bad, I decided to just keep moving and hike through the night to the fire tower at the middle of the island. It was 20+ miles, hiking in the dark, thinking about wolves and moose the whole time. I made it to the tower, and climbed up to escape the mosquitoes. Problem was, it was so cold and windy on the tower, and it was made of angled steel, I couldn't sleep there. I stayed awake until sunrise and started to hike back. I got so sleepy that I just layed down next to the trail. It was sunny and not one person came down that trail all day. I slept so long that by the time I got back to Windigo, I had missed the boat again! Embarrassed, I found a ranger this time, who gave me some trail mix and sent me to a lean-to to spend an unintened second night there. On the third day, I just stayed near the dock, eager to leave. My 2.5 hour trip turned into 2.5 days!

1. The boat is the most reliable and safest way to travel to Isle Royal. 2. Looking at the plane in the video - this is a Cessna UF206F single engine aircraft that seats 6. Having lived in Alaska for a number of years - and traveled to places via sea plane dozens and dozens of times, I personally wouldn't fly out over Lake Superior to Isle Royal in anything less than DHC-2 Beaver or a Cessna 208 Caravan. Our Bowhead Whale Survey team flew in a Twin Otter out over the Beaufort & Chukchi Sea and if I were going to fly commercial passengers to Isle Royal - that's the plane I'd choose.

Isle Royale is remote. You were daytrippers unprepared for the conditions.
@LovingLifeHitchedUp
@LovingLifeHitchedUp Жыл бұрын
I would say, underprepared for sure. no doubt. We are not normally "remote" location folks anymore. Thanks for your support!
@tomlittle557
@tomlittle557 4 ай бұрын
@@LovingLifeHitchedUp Simple solution -- If you don't like "remote" locations, then don't go there. You were critical of the Isle Royale experience because it didn't fit your preferences. The "challenges" that you identified are exactly why I love returning to the island.

I'm going in mid-August 7-nights backpack with my three sons. By September should be far fewer mosquitos, still Deet or something similar. Considering camp shoes/sandals to give feet more opportunity to dry out.
