So, to summarize, go to law school if you want to be a lawyer, but if you don't want to be a lawyer, don't go to law school. Well stated, counselor.

Austin Beaumont so then why do people go to law school who don't plan to be a lawyer? What is their end goal?
@TheAustinBeaumont7 жыл бұрын
My comment was more an observation on the banality of her thesis. E.g., if you want to be a civil engineer, go to civil engineering school, but if you don't, then don't. It's about the most asinine thing to say. From my experience in law school, 98% of people were there to be lawyers. The other 2% were bored housewives or guys who had an awesome 6 years at the frat in undergrad and wanted another 3 years to party.

It's clearly not that obvious, because some people (even in the comments below) disagree with me.

@mafaldapratasfernandes17196 жыл бұрын
@@TheAustinBeaumont Actually many people go to law school and they want to be in other professions, somewhat adjacent, but in which many people have a law degree. That triggers people into thinking they should get a law degree if they want to be successful in those professions. Examples: politics, lobbying, public/government administration, private administration jobs, non-profit/foundation work, public service work, etc.

"don't go to law school if you don't want to be a lawyer" i'm in law school and that's probably the dumbest shit I've ever heard. Lots of careers other than lawyer need a legal training (judges, notary, baillif, bank professions....) So you can totally go to law school even if you don't want to be a lawyer, as you study you're gonna learn a lot of things and your career goal might even change in the end ! I am honestly surprised that a law student would advise not to go to law school unless you want to be a lawyer.

@quinneaton44667 жыл бұрын
Doesn't really matter. If you're deadset on law, studies show that STEM fields do the best on the LSAT, fields like criminal justice and political science (and prelaw) do the worst. But really, do what you are interested in. Most employers will like seeing you have education in some interesting field unrelated to law.
@quinneaton44667 жыл бұрын
English would be a good undergrad degree for law school. Just make sure you take a good number of technical writing/composition-type classes (i.e. if you simply study literature, especially fictional literature, that will not really be helpful to you at all). Because, as you will someday find out, being a lawyer means you WRITE A LOT. I'd say at least a full half of every single day of my job is purely spent writing stuff (whether it be complaints, answers, motions, discovery, briefs, or even just emails).
@nocturne20297 жыл бұрын

@SimplyAvalon7 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! However that is not the only avenue to do so. Many jobs in the international community specifically in the UN and NATO are based on a national quota meaning at certain times they would not need to hire you (depending on the country that you are from meaning that they are also very competitive). You could also work in the private sector for many businesses now a days because of globalization are multinational. A business degree could be just as helpful for many jobs where you'd be able to work in the international community. I guess it totally depends on whether you'd like to be on the law side of it or not since those jobs don't have to be totally related to law although it's certainly a plus. Hope this helped. :)

A lot of people hate law school, and enjoy being a lawyer. Some enjoy law school and hate being lawyer. Of course some love both and hate both. It's tricky to say whether law school is right for you. Non practicing law school graduates often make more than non law school graduates. Is that because they are over achievers and would make this anyways? Is it because they have huge debt and have to make more to remove it? Or is it because you learn things in school that apply everywhere else? I'm guessing it's a combo of all the above. I've met very wealthy people who got a law degree without any intentions of practicing, and leveraged it to do another profession super well. Maybe they got lucky, but I can't help but feel that law graduates get "lucky" often. Mostly because you learn so many skills in law school that people take for granted. Sure some employers will think you are too qualified for certain jobs, but are those jobs you actually want? All this to say it's such a personal choice.

The thing is that law is the last resort of students who did their undergrad in arts so it certainly isn't medical but it's a lot better than a sociology or political science degree.
@violetroy58387 жыл бұрын
AMEN! The very simple answer to the title video is "No!". I'm a lawyer and going to LS was the worst decision of my life. Not only is the field full of money-hungry, prestige-obsessed, and those devoid of any hobbies or passion, but law schools only care about their bottom line. They receive federal backed money so even if the students can't pay off the ridiculously overpriced tuition, the school coffer is full.
@violetroy58387 жыл бұрын
Shehroz, that shows a lack of planning with an important and life-changing decision such as college. I'm not judging at all b/c I wish I could rewind my life but since I can't, I speak up to help others. LS is a refuge for liberals arts majors, you are right about that. This is why I advise people to get an undergrad in something you're interested in but also something you can fall back on in case you don't like the law. You can't predict the future, but you can help your future self by not closing all options. I knew what lawyers did and have some in my family, always liked law and politics, but life threw me a curveball. I had no idea when I entered LS that I would end up hating the field, and mind you, I wanted to be a lawyer for a long time, so mine was not a last-minute decision. But here I am, absolutely miserable in the field and trying desperately to claw my way out. Life is unpredictable, and if law is one's last resort (like it is for many), the outcome is likely not going to be very good. Good luck in whatever you decide!
@stumpbumpers7 жыл бұрын
So, how did you go from understanding what a lawyer does, desiring for so long to be one, make a plan to enter LS, become a lawyer and now "absolutely miserable"? Is it the work load, maybe the type of law you are doing? Too much time devoted to the practice? Is it your colleagues attitudes and politics? I have read your comments on other videos, but I have not read anything where you have actually stated what your problem with being a lawyer is.
@violetroy58387 жыл бұрын
Because such is life: unpredictable & abrupt, which is why I recommend potential law students to have a undergrad degree to fall back on in case they don't like practicing. I read the negative Internet stories about the legal field, thought it would be different for me & went on to make my own mistake, & live and learn. No amount of interning and observing will prepare you for the everyday life of a lawyer--a paralegal likely has a good understanding, however. My main problem is with LS that run a scam by not teaching marketable skills & haven't adapted to the new reality for lawyers. Main reasons why I don't like the legal field: -While others are juggling new business ideas & plans, you are not involved in tangible creation, but instead look out for the negatives at every turn & halt their excitement -Being chained to your desk reading & altering documents (ex: contracts as in-house counsel). Arguing with other lawyers about mundane clauses with the only purpose being to make someone else richer -No room for original thinking as you rely on statutes and past cases to make a determination in the issue at hand -The cost of attending LS, the bypassed income and experience isn't worth it for many. But, you don't have to believe me. You don't have to believe the high depression and substance abuse rates in the profession either, or that it is consistently among the unhappiest jobs in America. Good luck in whatever you decide.

Hi Lynnea, I'm heading to McGill to start law school in the fall! Do you have any tips for us pre-law students the summer before we start? :)
@vitriala7 жыл бұрын
Hi Lynnea, I'm considering applying to law school but I want to hear your opinions about the legal job market. I heard law school isn't a good investment anymore less you go to a top tier school. I wonder if you any have input on this? thanks

I've never met a rich lawyer It reminds me of the rap industry where there's some big names and then a bunch of averages who make a livable wage because the expenses on running an office is high.

Quick question: Have you met anyone who took the foreign route? Canadian law schools are competitive and have limited spaces unlike UK and Australia...What do you say to those looking to take this route?
@nocturne20297 жыл бұрын
Mel I haven’t done law school yet but I have been told many times that it’s very recommended to go to law school in the country/province where you want to practice. Ex. If you get a law degree in Canada you are licenced as a lawyer in Canada, but not anywhere else, so if you went home to Australia or something you wouldn’t be able to practice there.

I'm in my 2nd-year undergrad in Canada and I want to start studying for the LSAT, what prep books would you recommend, I know you did a video on it but do you have anything current?
@Burrgametate7 жыл бұрын
don't use prep books, they will only slow u down, just schedule a test and take it, if u fail, keep taking it, until you research on ur own WHAT FUCKING BOOKS YOU SHOULD HAVE TO PREP FOR THE LSAT. No ones gonna hold your hands, figure it out on your own.

I'm just making sure, do you need to get a bachelor degree in university before you go to law school, and if you do what did u major in I herd that political science or sociology is good, but is there any other ones or just those?
@nocturne20297 жыл бұрын
She_Wolf you need an undergrad and can get any undergrad you want; I recommend something you’re interested in (helps you do well if you’re actually interested in what you’re learning) and that you could deal with doing for a job of law school doesn’t work out

I wanted to be a professor but the remuneration for teaching jobs is quite low so now I'm looking at law. Do you think it's a good idea?
@Ali-ro2vv1177 жыл бұрын
Professors in any given discipline are compensated quite well in North America, best to stay the course...
@shehroz62207 жыл бұрын
Yes in North America not in South Asia.
@Ali-ro2vv1177 жыл бұрын
That's understandable, but if your passion is in teaching it would be worthwhile to stick to it. Of course I know very little about the discipline in which your passion lies, but if it coincides with law, or if law is something your are interested in (as means to your interest), then it never hurts to put your best foot forward and aspire to teach law at a higher level. My current philosophy professor is also taking night classes at the law faculty of a neighbouring university. Ultimately, do not be discouraged by your external limitations my friend. Higher education is (more often than not) a worthwhile investment.

Seems like the only realistic option in politics where you can make 6k is lawyer am I wrong or? Also I'm trying to decide between employment law and criminal... I'm interested in litigation and it seems both fulfill that, I also am interested in what either lawyer does so now I'm trying to figure out what's best financially between the two was wondering if you had any input. I'm really interested in one day holding a government posistion or posistion of a judge so also trying to see which one leads to that more so.

I have chronic illness though. Do you think I should still consider doing law school?
@nocturne20297 жыл бұрын
URCHIN SAM what kind of chronic illness? I guess it depends on how heavily it would affect your ability to keep up with law school (ex. moderate arthritis won’t be as debilitating as something that has you bedridden).

Does law school teach you how to lie? Or is that something you learn after you graduate? Thanks.

DiaRia Grace p I don’t think she can help you with SATs because we don’t have those in Canada Also, you need an undergrad/bachelor’s degree to get into law school, as well as a good GPA and good LSAT score, not to mention a good application, resume, transcript etc
