Like any university, least of all a top 10 rated one, needs bigging up, or that that would be a useful way of determining aptitude for fulfilling the course. Although York hasn't always been particularly prestigious. It has frequently had courses in clearing, perhaps partly because aspects of its campus were a turn off to some for some years.

The University of York is, aesthetically , ahead of the low level, bland, form of brutalist architecture that it used to be in the late 90s. An extra large campus or two has lifted this place and I'm sure that, as a result, the quality of the students must be less boring than it once seemed.

There's no doubt to me, though, that York city itself is a vibrant, stunningly beautiful, place, in a world sense, even more so because the outskirts of York - the townhouses and the villages - are also beautiful. Not just because of its medieval architecture - the city has an honest, practical, industrious, nature lining some of its character, some of its people, as if continuing from its Victorian importance as a railway and chocolate factory hub. It also has at least 2 really superb, grand, hotels near the railway station. Most other cities, ancient or otherwise, can't be close to competing, centrally , with hotels. The contrast between all this and some low level concrete around a lake (albeit with the lovely Heslington Hall and the innovative Central Hall) was perhaps once so stark as to feel permanently 1960s surreal. York city and its mysterious outskirts is truly magical, not least because of the people it attracts.

This is gonna sound really elitist (and before I go on I want to say I have nothing but respect for people who have worked hard to get into any university no matter what level) but as much as I want to study in York, I'm really worried it'll hurt my chances of doing a PhD in maths. They're super competitive and as I've already be rejected by Oxford, I need the next best thing (Durham and Bristol are my two main contenders). But at the same time, I like York so much

I came through clearing so it was different for me. I got BBCC, but I improved my A2 grades significantly. Very mathematical, so out of the 7 modules (120 credits) there is a mathematics module (10), Probability (10) and Statistics (10). Additionally, there is a lot of algebra in Microeconomics (30).
