Should you Invest in Disney's Lorcana?

I'm taking a look and sharing my opinion on the sealed product, singles and promos of Disney's upcoming TCG Lorcana

What do you think of Lorcana as an investible product?

The fact that the company is being sued for allegedly stealing the game by hiring former employees of upperdeck is not a great start before launch. Even if the court rules in their favor later I can't imagine that's a good look to launch a game on. Edit: I feel like to go full guns blazing with the courts before it even launches means there may be some truth to it.

@@dillsimmons I saw that but unless Upper Deck has some smoking gun that hasn’t been disclosed, their case seems pretty weak. Games are similar but most games are similar. Unless they have something in print where Miller is stating a breach of his contract I doubt anything comes from it.

@@dillsimmons Upper Deck has the WORST REPUTATION in the card industry. They were found guilty of producing counterfeit Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Cards and distributing them to Toy R Us in 2010. MLB sued them for trademark infringement and illegally selling MLB cards. Plus many more lawsuits. There is a reason why they lost all the rights to produce sports cards for the major sporting companies over the years. Upper Deck has a history of being a shady business.

D23 set is going to worth a lot more in the future I am sure. My Chinese and Japanese friends have already asked me million times about Lorcana. Disney the only one IP that could beat Pokemon. 20000USD is not a very high price for Pokemon. D23 sets really have no limits in terms of price.

Yeah, as an IP it has an insane pull amongst collectors. So much so I am surprised by how far off they were on gauging the demand for set 1.

do you know if the euopean distribution is a local printer? i know panini italy is different from usa in terms of quality control, is it the same with lorcana?

I think the main printing company is in Germany.

I do think the game will have a good long run but I also feel like even if it doesn’t that set one will always hold some value to collectors.

Hard to say at this point. If we get a second print that is discernable from the first print then you should probably hold but if they are exactly the same then the prices of boxes could very well drop Q1 of next year.

Do you think series 1 boxes will improve value even if they are not exactly "sealed"? I mean no plastic around to make them really sealed. And, i read that the second print of the first series will correct cards errors.. and maybe change the external envelop of the boxes.. if this occur maybe is better to keep the first print boxes closed for investment, don t you think?

I think first print set 1 boxes will go up with time. There are ways to differentiate and will draw a premium from sealed collectors.

I have no idea what'll happen with it but I'll pick up a couple of boxes of the first chapter just incase. Still just about available here in the UK although stock is moving fast. Lorcana and One Piece really have taken the TCG world by storm.

I think it has two routes…tcg collectors AND disney collectors, anything rare and Disney brings in money. I think one day disney collectors will still be paying for these once the tcg crowd moves on

I absolutely think these will remain collectible even if the game "dies" off. I think the game has real staying power behind it though. Early sets are hurt by lack of availability but Ravensburger seems to be committed to making it as right as possible

They said they will keep printing the first set. So no, i don't think there is a really "invest" opportunity except for special promo cards like the D23 cards.

I don’t doubt that they will print more of set one. I do doubt that they will be able to print enough to meet demand. Stores are talking about not getting enough wave one to be able to even sell single boxes to an individual. If allocations are anywhere near that severe I doubt they catch up. It is also important to note that print runs don’t necessarily effect long term prices of sealed product. If it follows similar market as Pokémon a lot of the product gets opened which makes the sealed product appreciate just do to scarcity and again with allocations looking to be severe I would imagine most product in first few waves will be opened.

Ravensburger/Lorcana specifically said they would keep printing until demands are met. Ofcourse, over the course of 10-20 years, you will be able to sell with a "profit". I just want to keep scalpers away from this game...

@@kennyb336 I would love to keep them away from the game as well but that’s just not the reality of the situation. People are scalping Garbage Pail kids they are surely going to snatch up a Disney IP TCG. On the plus side I do think singles will drop relatively quickly for those who just want to play or collect sets. For those who want to crack product it’s probably going to be very hard to do or very expensive.

Same, feels like Pokémon when I was a kid only unlike then TCGs are huge now. Game checks off all the boxes you want out of a TCG and has a monster IP behind it. I think Ravensburger themselves only ones that can kill this game.

Since basically everyone knows the allocations for this game is crap, the first boxes are going to sell for stupid scalper prices and people are going to pay whatever price they put up. Ravensburger is going to have to move fast to print more product to try to minimize the scalping.

I think they would love to but logistically I don’t think they will get demand met on set one. I’m hopeful they can catch up by set two but may be too late for it as well.

I believe any playable TCG should not be viewed as an investment, especially one that doesn't include serial numbered cards or anything considered limited edition. The only investable cards I see from Lorcana are the D23 expo/1st edition stamped cards and maybe Enchanted cards. Otherwise flippers and non-players of the game should stay away, and companies should state that outright to customers. Obviously it's not enforceable after purchase, but it would be nice to know companies and LGS' have that same mindset of "play or stay away".

There’s nothing to say you can’t play and invest in what you play. The reason a lot of these card games are sustainable is because people buy them for multiple reasons. If there were no collectibility or investibility it might as well be a board game.

@@HobbyHeroPlays-oi8jt Ofc you can collect. At a minimum you need to have a collection in order to build strategic decks for matches. The 'T' in TCG is for trading, so having a collection with duplicates is great for trading purposes. No where is 'investing' mentioned or meant for games like this. The point is to play and trade and collect, not hold and 'invest' hoping you can flip for multiplied profits... go play the stock market if that's all you're interested in.

Player and collector here , Disney has a pretty unique experience here . 1st they are disney which means they have endless charaters to add to their deck . That being said that in itself means collectors are able to collect just those characters. 2 they have a market and fan base no one else does Disneyland, Disney world all the disney resorts and Disney shops. Keeping that in mind their pins are doing great so even if they went to just selling in their shops people would buy to trade and collect . I dont think wer going to see 500k lorcana cards in 20 years but I think value will hold up but I also wouldnt "invest" in a tcg just to "invest" . Buy it collect it play it just have fun and enjoy ripping packs I stopped pokemon after the 1st set and just got into this for me its fun to try to collect the whole set (minus enchanteds) and the enchanted part is only because alot of the enchanteds just aren't good play cards I think they should have made enchanteds with diffrent play , but i get why they didnt since they want everyone to be able to but also want to appeal to collectors.

I feel like this is a 50/50 thing for investment. Disney will be more then able to make this highly enticing to the kids of today with a television series for the story or some virtual games similar to how Nintendo managed to hypnotise most of the 90's with pokemon. Now Disney can also ruin this series by seperation of titles, for example if Disney Only uses Disney titles for the cards we may have some issues, ideally for this game you want gets to have the chance to have Darth Vader go against Iron man and Buzz Lightyear, so I am going to look into trying out some of these products but I am not expecting this title to really pan out. I feel like corporate greed will end up ruining this, we are sort of in a new Junk Wax Era for cards again so this could really end up being a great lightning in a bottle. Or another dead end like the 2006 VSystem

I believe failure is definitely within the realm of reason. I do think that sealed product still has pretty significant upside. Much smaller game IPs have failed and still held significant value for their sealed product for collectors. I doubt we see Star Wars as someone else currently has the license for TCGs. If Disney itself was behind it possibly but not sure Ravensburger could or would pony up for more IPs

i don't get why ppl buy 1st edition... there is no plastic covering, and there is videos of how to fish packs out, to weigh or just replace with gi joe cards. first edition isn't really sealed.

Just a fact of collecting. People will always put a premium on the first if there is a way to prove it.

It really has been like this for almost as long as I can remember. Even back in early MtG and Base Set Pokémon. I personally don’t mind it because it means the hobbies I enjoy also hold and appreciate in value.

But when it's at the point where players can't enjoy the game because "investors" buy up all of a new release series etc it blows. My kid tried to get into Pokemon recently and it was a pain in the ass to get new sets for him for a bit. Christ even target had folks fighting and worse over boosters

Seeing how every middle aged average male has graded comics / pokemon / TCG cards currently: No. Its all massivly overhyped and an entire generation manged to convince each other these things have these valuations.

Collectors come in all ages and have been around a lot longer than you or I. The long term value being determined by the strength and relevance of the IPs and Disney has one of the strongest IPs out there. Disney will keep marketing and making content for younger generations who will grow up, get incomes and collect the stuff they grew up with. So unless your belief is that humanity will stop collecting what they like or that Disney will become irrelevant in our lifetime I think set one Lorcana is probably going to play out just like I said in the video.

The two I mentioned in the video (DBZ and Harry Potter) have been dead for years and set one product on both are about ten times MSRP at release with some of the lower print sets at one hundred times MSRP

I would say its playable, inclusive with limited barriers to entry, and engaging for mist families. Thats why i'd say its not investable. People would be better off buying sticks than trying to claim inventory to flipin a month or 2. If you are an "investor" leave this one for the players.

I’m not sure that appealing to a wide audience makes it less investable. It would be nice if everyone was just buying to play but that simply isn’t the reality. Lot a of people collect and will want sealed boxes in their collections as well

@@HobbyHeroPlays-oi8jt that's collecting, which I classify as different than investing. Most collectors I know aren't looking for profit, they are holding to pass down to family. Most TCG investors aren't looking for long holds either. They want quick flips. Investing in TCGs has a negative impact on actual collectors and players. They create false scarcity to drive up the market. The reality is, if a person has $100 to invest in a TCG they'd do better to make sound investments into the stock market. If you hold for 20+ years you'll see an increase in value, but I wouldn't plan a retirement around it. TCG "investing" really became a thing during the pandemic when there were shortages that flippers/skalpers would try to exploit. Truly investing in cardboard has never been a sound 8nvestmwnt strategy.

Collectors and investors don’t screw up collectible card games; they keep them in business. Great games don’t last without them and is the reason companies spend so much money on IPs. As someone who has played games for 30 years some of the best games I’ve played were the shortest lived due to no one collecting or investing into the game. If you enjoy playing Lorcana be thankful that it has an IP that will draw in casual players, collectors and investors as that will keep it around for a long time.
