Braille is awesome! My favorite is grade 2. Braille is great for me because I have glaucoma and I struggle with straining my eyes. Braille really helps me by making writing and reading more enjoyable! I’m not afraid of blindness because I know Braille. Thank you Louis Braille for creating a wonderful code for the blind and visually impaired!

After finally accepting my vision was only going to get worse, I find now I struggle to read print with magnification. I get headaches and eye strain fast. I'm approaching complete blindness at an accelerated rate, so I figured better to be prepared before it happens then have to take a crash course. When I really need to know it. But, to each their own. Thanks for the video! Have an awesome week! 🙂👍🏽

I watched a friend of mine slowly become disconnected from everyone as his hearing slipped away. He thought himself too old to learn to sign, and perhaps he was right. So I thought to myself that the wise thing to do is for everyone to learn both braille and sign in case they suddenly lose a sense. So, I studied both. Now I am going blind in one eye and will probably go blind in the other, and my fingers have become insensitive because of diabetes. I wonder if braille comes in large print.

Hey Derik from James, I have been a low vision individual since 90 and learned Braille in H.S. And was a learning experience since my instructor maded me learn the second language and transcribe it myself to grasp it. Now it comes in handy when brailling video game guides, since I am VIP fighting gamer, and when I use them at restaurants, etc. Have a great weekend!!!

I started learning braille in elementary school because it was thought that my vision would rather they get worse.however, my vision improved, if only for lately, so I traded learning braille for learning how to touch type. Once I learn keyboarding skills that did not require vision, as well as her use of assistive technology like Zoom text, along with other screen reading and magnification software, I have no desire to learn braille yet. As a child I didn't see its importance and I resented having to learn something my fully cited. Did not. Now I have a young adult I agree with you in the sense that there are times like with elevator buttons bathroom designs or classroom doors where I think G learning braille would be more beneficial than trying to magnify this or even using an app. We all know how often technology breaks down, and we all know how our eyes and vision can be reliable in certain situations, therefore I think bro is a good alternative. That's nice say I'm going to learn it right now, but I'm not excluding learning it in the future either.

My son is only 7 and already has lost a lot of vision. We are teaching him braille because he's so young and it will benefit him when he is in upper grades in school. But it has been a battle with the school because he has 10 degrees of usable vision. I think it will help him a lot later in life.

I am a braille reader and have been since I lost my vision 30 years ago. Curious to know what technique you were using to learn braille Derek? My instructor taught me with two muffin pans and tennis balls and to this day that is how I teach others braille. now, in saying that, I'm not a fast braille reader. I don't read large books in braille but I appreciate knowing it for things such as labels, recipes or having things in my wallet like Social Security numbers and emergency phone numbers etc. I can type braille on an old Perkins braille typewriter rather quickly but when it comes to reading it… I'm super slow LOL. I'm what I like to call, a two finger Braille reader. Never could figure out how to use all of my fingers. I guess with technology the way it is today it isn't completely necessary to learn braille, but I feel it's pretty important if you like to actually read things or see them I guess in a sense. I have found that when just listening to screen readers, I'm not Learning how to spell proficiently. I am a horrible speller. Anyway that's my two cents. Have a super day.

I taught myself grade 1 Braille. It was way easier than grade 2 (which is short hand)

I used to read and teach Braille years ago. Even though you might have usable vision, it's a good idea to learn the basics, like letters, numbers, and basic punctuation. It's just enough to help you safely navigate in unfamiliar settings, just in case. I don't regularly read it anymore, but I make a point to know the basics. We used to make a point of teaching these to all of our students, with or without usable vision.

Derek Daniel Well don't feel bad. I have to go re-learn Braille now anyway, especially since it's been changed to UEB (United English Braille). It's not that different from what I used to know, but it's enough of a difference that I've got to do it.

I absolutely love this video. It was very helpful. I have Macular Degeneration. I was diagnosed just a few years ago when I was 36. My sister has been pushing me to learn to read braille for a long time now. She feels that if I learn braille now if I should lose my eyesight right away I wouldn't be totally lost and in a horrible situation. Honestly, I thought she was being totally dermatic and I couldn't see a practical application for braille. Now that I do see how important it is I am unable find good training on how to read braille. You would think with so many people who have lost their sight there would be a plethora of information online. It is very easy to find "what is braille?" and "should I learn to read braille" but very little information on "how to learn Braille", how to practice it and where to buy affordable books. I think that more people like myself would learn braille but sheesh I am confused as to where to start. Even still I do see the benefits in learning braille so I will be persistent. Thank you very much for this video. I look forward to seeing more.

I use Braille everyday! for so many things! it,s a very good skill, of course now days with all the new technologies wenn you lose your sight as a adult it can be ok if you don't, learn Braille, but the problem is that in our country France Visually impaired children are not oblidged to learn Braille they use magnification, CCTV and voice over,TalkBack etc.. but the problem is that their reading and writing skills are terrible!!! today we have many VIP young people who don't, know how to read and write correctly! it,s a disaster for their future life because if you want to expect to get a job one day you can,t without knowing to read and write!!!! wenn you lose your sight as an adult, it,a different because as a sighted child you,be learned to read,and write plus all the grammar etc... I think that all visually impaired kids would learn Braille as sighted children's learn to read and write with print! otherwise how can they know how to spell corectly words? Reading in Braille is exactly the same as reading printed book's! we get all the letters, punctuation etc.... technology is great but we don't want the next generations coming to be unable to read and write!

I have some usable central vision. But I prefer to learn Braille.i started learning Braille online uebonline.org/ Then I trained in braille reading and writing while in my orientation and mobility class. I haven't used it anywhere practically. As you mentioned, Braille is mandatory for a completely blind person. it is not a high priority for low vision person since technology comes in for rescue. But knowing my RP vision can deteriorate further, I prefer to learn Braille and keep in touch often. It is individual preference at end of the day. It is better not to overlook Braille especially when you know your vision is going to deteriorate.

I'm currently learning Japanese and I'm kind of curious if I should learn braille for Japanese Or in English. In case In the future if I do lose my sight. Where do people get braille books?

That's a great question! Now, I do not know braille. However, there are times that I could have used it. Especially when I am in an elevator. It is hard to read those buttons. So, in that instance, braille would have helped. However, 30 years ago (or more), I was told not to learn braille until I have become totally blind. I guess being totally blind, you're fingers are more sensitive. I'm not sure. I would like to what others think as well.

I recently been blind for two to year and I was wondering what kind of screen reader do you prefer on the computer?
@Thatblindguy5277 жыл бұрын
I know of jaws because when I lost my vision from cancer I attended a school they had a software on the desktop. I want to purchase a MacBook to try the macOS version of voice over. You'll be cool if you had tutorials on how to navigate your voice over on Mac PC or on the MacBook laptop.
@Thatblindguy5277 жыл бұрын
So I went out and purchase iPad and iPhone and I got to love the voice over assessability's on iPhones and iPads and other Apple products that's what I'm asking because I am questioning my thought of purchase a MacBook.
@heavymetaljunkie765 жыл бұрын
Hey there it depends on the computer you are using. For Mac it just Voice Over built into their Desktops, Laptops. Now for Windows you have several options to choose from. The paid screen reader is obviously JAWS and the free versions are NVDA, and Narrator. Hope this helps.
