Should YOU learn to SCUBA dive in the UK? | Pros and Cons of UK SCUBA diving

I am BSAC trained, 1971 is when I started. I was 2nd Class Advance instructor by 1982. UK diving is the best in the world, though I have to be honest and say that most of that is in Scotland. St Kilda, Scapa Flow - to die for. I have dive Red Sea, Australia east and west; they are ok., but Scotland leaves them for dead.

Haven’t had the chance to come up to Scotland yet, Farnes is the closest I’ve been but I have to agree. UK on good conditions is incredible 😄

My mate went to Australia to see his family, of course, he had to dive the Great Barrier Reef, the scuba instructor asked him what is it like to dive the best diving in the world, my mate has been diving for 30 years in the UK, he said to instructor yes the first two dives were good but every other was just the same, same coral same fish yada yada yada, the instructor asked him where he dived and he replied in the North Sea, where's that the instructor asked my mate who said the sea between England and Holland, the instructor asked what's the visibility is like my mate said if you can see your feet that's plenty and we are well wrapped up we wear dry suits all year. He got a puzzled look!

Haha that sounds about right! I learnt in a reservoir in Wolverhampton and anything over a metre viz bought everyone out. It’s good in a way, if you can learn do dive safely in those conditions then diving abroad for the most part is a breeze!

Great video! One of the best things I have ever done is learn to dive in the UK. Have been lucky enough to visit and dive some spectacular places all around the world, but when I get asked where my favourite place to dive is I always say Scotland - Whether it's the Marine Reserve at St Abbs/Eyemouth, the Sound of Mull, the Firth of Clyde, Kinlochbervie or Scapa Flow there is something for everyone. England isnt't bad either, it's just I've only been to the Farnes and Capenwray ... probably a good excuse to plan a trip down south!

There’s a saying with my club that if you can dive here you can dive anywhere. It’s true! Uk can have some rough conditions, I’m in Egypt at the moment and the divings a breeze. There’s some stunning diving around the UK, haven’t had the opportunity to go up to scotland yet but the Farnes, Plymouth and inland sites are great!

I always say (about diving in Ireland) it's all about the underwater landscapes not the fish. Dived all around the world and Ireland's still at the top of my list, caves, walls, gullies. Then every so often you'll see something amazing, like 40 basking sharks! (Vid on my page!)

Hey, i live close to Dudley and looking for a new club in the next 6 months when I start to get my gear together (just newly qualified and man it’s expensive - especially when there is two of us diving!) Is Dudley dolphin very active in terms of going to the coast etc? Loved the video, very informative.

Hi Callum, they do loads of trips yes! I’ve been to Plymouth, the Farne islands and Lundy with them. I know they visit swanage pier semi regularly and they have a trip planned to one of the Scottish isles later in the year. Probably plan around 5/6 a year to the coast, then with visits to places like stoney cove and dost hill much more regularly just because they’re closer!
