I also have reverse SAD. I live in Reno, where it rarely rains, and each summer is hotter than the last. Winter is mild (I lived in Tahoe for years prior to moving to the Biggest Little City) and skiing is close by, but the summers are long and sweltering!

This is a beautiful state. I've lived here for 34 years. I'm going to add to cons. Lately there have been a lot of homeless, drugs and thefts. I'm getting ready to move to another state because of how much crime has risen. It's sad because I used to love it here.

You can still work a govt job as a housekeeper, or any service job, the VA is great for getting your foot in the door for govt work! That’s where I started and still work at the VA Health Center

Born and raised in Eastern Washington. Moved to the DFW in 19...ready to go back to our home state. We are definitely considering Olympia.

After spending weekends in Oly and Tacoma over the last 20 years, yes, these are right on, especially the traffic on I5. The rain never bothered me, nor did the Big Dark (when I lived in Scotland winter daylight was 6 hours). The farmers market is flat out AMAZING, try the Hawiian Shave Ice Lady. As I roamed the down town many times with my neices, I thought it really could look better with a good cleaning and lots of paint.

We call the grey the great grey. There have been times when I did not see the sun for 100 days… Grey can be super overwhelming. IMO it sprinkles with no end but very rarely rains.

Hey! Thank you so much! I really appreciate the comment? Does this seem like an area you would enjoy or do the cons make it a turn off?

@@livingintacomawashington yes, it seems like I'd like that area. The cons weren't much of a turn off.

Traffic? It's only a problem if you are going North. I live in Thurston County because I would hate to live North of here. I commuted from Oly to Seattle for many years... It was terrible. But never really worried about traffic in Olympia itself. Now that I have retired, I rarely find myself going North to Tacoma, Seattle, or Bellevue. There is nothing in those cities that is worth the headaches of traffic in those areas along with the crime, parking issues, homelessness, and costs that is worth the effort to even visit to the North. The only traffic to worry about on a regular basis is the I5-Highway 101 interchange that might add 5 minutes to your trip on a weekday afternoon between 3-6 pm.

Agreed! And Seatac is not that far...not sure why they count these as negatives.
@genripper-b8q5 ай бұрын
the problem with "only a problem if you are going north" is that unless you remain north forever you are going to have to go south. guaranteed that no matter which direction you are going that one of the directions is going to take 50-100% longer
@bobbyGnOly Жыл бұрын
NOt sure about the 'con' of olympia traffic. Yes, it's terrible if you want to go north.....but within the city its rarely a problem...also, if you go south to Portland, it's normally not bad at all...also, how can you fault Olympia for traffic, when the same applies to every city on I-5. I always fly out of Portland....so much easier to deal with than SEATAC.

Lakefair is in July and Is NOT tied to SEAFAIR. The Tugboat Races over Labor Day is a HUGE favorite you didn't mention.

You mention most job opportunities are in government or service industries. I work as a marketer for construction and engineering currently in CA, considering moving to WA or OR. If I was to move to Olympia, would it be likely I'd have to commute to Tacoma or somewhere else where there were more large businesses? We want to buy a home in the PNW so making an average salary would not be an option.
