*Can definitely say this in Indonesia.* _Crunchyroll, Funimation and others only care about licensing in the USA_ -majority of the shows are unwatchable here (even though they are watchable in Singapore next door). The only decent alternative is Animax, but that’s *not* an on-demand site & only displays whatever they can get their license from the last season with big weeb reception. _Not to mention that you have to pay a whole lot more than Crunchyroll with far less the controls._ And then there’s the “Payment” problem. *Anything that is direct transaction from Indonesia to other countries needs VISA/Mastercard Credit Card, while a lot of people don’t have that capability.* _The solution to this would be like the Steam Wallet Gift Card, which is sold en masse here._

They'll probably never have the option to let people download episodes. I doubt they're legally allowed to do it and so long as anime dvds/blurays exist they probably will never be allowed to
@TheRibbonRed7 жыл бұрын
RadTicTacs if we think about the “Download” problem through IT, we know that “Streaming” is just the same as downloading-the difference is just that they’re not permanent and not saved as a file ready to be grabbed by others. If CR is to invest heavily on file formats & encoding, they can allow “downloads” that’s only watchable on CR player. *But I think CR would be better investing heavily on licensing efforts.*
@kueller9177 жыл бұрын
People on the technical side know streaming is just downloading. Hell, HorribleSubs has managed to run for years now without issue, but the business side aren't known for being technical. They want their content as secure as possible even if it's just smoke and mirrors in the end. That's not just a problem with CR. American media companies have been known to spend millions on foolproof anti-piracy protections that get cracked in weeks.
@TheRibbonRed7 жыл бұрын
That's why I said it is better to invest in licensing efforts. What CR needs now is to broaden up their reach, either worldwide or solely in US over niche/unreachable titles like NGE. *If Crunchyroll is as comfortable right now as Digi said, then it's time for them to stand up and work.* Companies that wave around in wealth when at the top tends to fall quickly when faced with a new competitor, which Uniquenameosaurus' video might intend to do. There really is never a break in the business world. Either get on with it or get run over.
@kueller9177 жыл бұрын
I does seem like their posting more well known older series (even if just a decade or so older) so maybe that is their intention. It could be a long game too, since as they get larger they could have greater pulling power to get those licenses.
@pj2345-v4x7 жыл бұрын
You miss the point of his competition stance. You buy a phone for the core use of the phone because you need it, so it doesn't come down to which one you might get but instead which one you will get. Every phone can do basic phone shit, they all make calls, can access music, have apps, etc. One might have better apps in one area, sure, but you don't by apple because angry birds is on it. For playstations vs Xbox, yeah they have exclusive games, because the companies producing them either tailor their game for the console like Nintendo or they are already offering something that can't be reproduced. If I could play Halo for free with a giant community and internet access I would buy a PlayStation, because the Xbox is not giving me something extra that only it can provide to me. These are not consoles we are discussing, they are distribution platforms designed to give you a product anyone can get, they aren't busting their ass to produce the content and make their platform exclusively better, they are busting their ass to restrict other platforms and make the other service exclusively worse. In an industry where anybody can just go to kissani and get everything, the majority of business where you just bite your competitor and they bite you is not one that will thrive. A huge majority of anime viewers don't have a streaming subscription, there needs to at the very least be a guarantee that when I pay money for anime I can get all of it and not also have to buy the competitors, that's not real competition, and it's not like a console war.
@Zalis1166 жыл бұрын
If there were a legal site that had all anime, it would cost as much as several existing services combined, because it takes more money and manpower to license and translate more content on a weekly basis. You're not getting the whole puzzle for the cost of one piece of it.

@@Zalis116 exclusive licenses hurt the market. @@Left4Cake Costs for bandwidth, translations, dubbing, and licensing negotiations wouldn't suddenly go down just because the licenses are non-exclusive. And if companies expanded their selection to have some approximation of "all anime," they'd have to charge more so that the popular titles can subsidize all the old crap that nobody cares about. Yeah, most phones have all the relevant apps, but you're not going to find a phone for the price of a calculator.
@Left4Cake5 жыл бұрын
Why doesn't disallowing exclusive license also automatically mean expecting literally every show everywhere for one? Like if a service just doesn't want a show for what ever reason or a show doesn't want to be on a particular platform then fine. It's the fact that they are all spending extra money to knee cap each other rather then do things like... optimize there site more that's the issue. oh and also being able to sell your show in more then one place means you don't have to sell each individual licences for as much money since you can make your money back by being on all the popular streaming services. Meaning the servies should have more mony left over for the other aspects that arn't gonna be cheaper like dubbing and bandwidth.

That's just how the system works, and it takes more time than the weekly simulcasting schedule allows: www.animenewsnetwork.com/answerman/2017-09-01/.120752 And given that most pirates happily watch re-encoded legal streams (with the exact same subtitles) on bootleg streaming sites, the lack of song translations isn't really a driving force for piracy.

It was those "gateway" anime that got people interested enough to check out lesser-known / unlicensed stuff in the first place. A hell of a lot more people saw Pokémon and FLCL on TV, or rented Ninja Scroll from video stores, than the number of people who sent out self-addressed stamped envelopes for 6th-generation VHS fansubs of Trouble Chocolate. Piracy wasn't even particularly easy or convenient until 2003-04, and the US industry and fandom were well-established by that point. Did piracy play a role in the ecosystem? Sure it did, but to deny the work and contributions of the legitimate distribution industry is a historically mistaken position.

One thing you seem to be getting mixed up is original content vs licensed content. No one is saying that HBO should put all of its in-house shows on different channels or that Nintendo should sell Zelda on every console. If Crunchyroll decides to make an original show, they have no reason to put it on different streaming services. But licensed shows should be available through more than a single network. Also, you said that this argument doesn't get made for other mediums, but it does. There have long been complaints in gaming about not being able to play a game because you don't own the "right" console, or not being able to play with your friends because they play the *same* game on a *different* console. But now many games (Though definitely not all) are multi-platform and cross-platform play is finally starting to happen as well, which are both acting to fix those long-held complaints. The anime streaming market is facing the basically same problem: Split content, leading to a split community and driving people to piracy because they don't want to pay $50+/month on 7+ subscriptions just to watch everything they are interested in.
@Zeverinsen4 жыл бұрын
And we've seen how publishers and platformholders actually gain more on having cross platform releases and cross play available, because the consumers either pays for convenience or they won't pay at all.

Something that doesn't usually come up in the piracy argument is that some people just aren't interested in anime enough to justify spending money on it. At that point, the industry gains nothing as these people (myself included) wouldn't spend money on anime, even if they couldn't get it for free.

Agreed -- at least downloading via torrents or XDCC/DDL doesn't let pirates profit from the anime industry's work (and I should know), and gets you better quality, since bootleg streams = lossy re-encodes of downloaded files. Possibly better subs too, since bootleg streams for recent shows are taken from HorribleSubs 1:1 copies of legal streams with the exact same subtitles/translations, and downloading from fan release groups can (possibly) mean getting improvements on those official subs.
@Zalis1167 жыл бұрын
Speaking as a fansub translator, I wouldn't agree that official subs are "awful," although there's certainly room for improvement. And from their habits, most pirates wouldn't agree either, since most viewers choose to watch on bootleg streaming sites like KA (=direct rips of official streams & their subs), and even among those who choose to download via torrents, most choose... the HorribleSubs direct rips of official streams & their subs! Whatever's motivating the masses to pirate, it's clearly not a quest for better subtitles. Even for so-called "fansubs," which for modern anime are just edits of official subs, the translations aren't fundamentally different from the official subs. In addition to tweaking the timing/typesetting, translating OP/ED, and fixing English editing errors (simulcast subs are produced on a tight schedule) the fan release groups might add honorifics or change Western name order to Eastern -- however, those aren't translation improvements, they're just different localization choices. Some groups like to make official subs even _more_ Americanized/localized than they originally were, and add memes/trolling to the scripts as well.

At 15:35 when you bring up integrating Crunchyroll in MAL, that already exists but on Anime-Planet; not MAL. When you watch something on Crunchyroll via Anime-Planet you can tick an option that auto updates your currently watching list.

Honestly, I dont mind the ads when I can quickly click off of them. My problem with crunchyroll isnt that I dont want to pay for it, but that I have no reason to when I can essily access a similar service for free, WITH the large amount of shows I want to catch up on. Helping out the anime industry is something I want to do, but give me a genuine reason to other than I like your shit. Connecting my MAL account to something such as crunchyroll to instantly update my list would be incredibly helpful. Ill support the hell out of manga though.

there's actually plenty of argument against exclusives on consoles from the most radical pro-consumer side of the argument. and it's hard to disagree with them: you buy the console on its merits, on the service, not on the game you want. it's a very cheap and easy to just take a game hostage and convince people to buy your piece of hardware. xbox doesn't do it anymore *and* has better service than sony (allegedly, i don't have an xbox). and switch is portable and if had all the ps4 and xbox games, it would've had such an appeal, can you imagine? i admit, it's a very idealistic position and not very realistic, but a man can dream, right?

11:00 your counter argument here is inconsistent. If there were a phone than can play both Apple apps and Android apps then I would totally get that. In this case KissAnime for example. Are you saying Windows and Mac are not a competitive market? They are but they sure do try as hard as they can to play the same software. The idea of having something in a product that isn't in another is a given, but the contrast is too big here. PlayStation and X-box have different games (mostly not though), but that's not optimal. To prove this, I'd say the existence of a console that can play both would easily throw these two out of the market. Think: PC. But of course consoles still exist because they have other advantages to keep it going for them (like Nintendo and their occasional innovation)

I can confirm that Crunchyroll does occasionally update subtitle tracks. when they simulcasted the episode of Unlimited Blade Works with Shirou's fight against GIlgamesh originally they used a literal translation of the prayer that he uses for the titular ability, but changed this to the official, non-literal translation sometime after that initial airing.

Most of anime is made using what is a modern version of slave work. It can be argued that it is highly immoral to give money to corporations that finance this predatory business model, as most of the money wont even go to the animators themselves, being mostly directed towards those corporations. I think using a service like crunchyroll is questionable, and we should give the money to initiatives that protect the animators, or just through works there there is no exploration of the animators involved, such as buying kyoto animation merchandise. GIVING MONEY TO CRUNCHYROLL IS FUCKING WRONG AND YOU SHOULD REALLY THINK ABOUT IT PEOPLE

I cant understand why any streaming service wouldnt make being inrernational a prioroty. At the moment Disney plus is not in Europe, not even in the UK, a English speaking country. Is everyone I know pirating their shows, of course. I want to watch them and I dont really care if Disney, one of the biggest corporations, gets my money or not. Even when it released here, I dunno if I want to just give Disney money, I might. I dunno yet. Is piracy a crime, yeah. Is beating up a pedophile technically assault, also yeah. I dont mind if a huge corporation doesnt get my money because all they have been trying to do is get it, in anyway they can.

As for your idea about the Crunchyroll subs, the weird thing is that they already apparently had a similar idea with the Phoenix Wright show where you could right click and toggle between the version of the subs with the English and Japanese versions of the character names. I have no idea why they haven't already expanded on that idea already.

Here is my opinion about subtitles done by volunteers or whomever Crunchyroll is using: They don't have established guidelines. If you turn on subtitles/closed captions on KZbin, you will notice there is various inconsistencies (not counting automated captioning), from how they split the subtitles, how punctuation is used (some uses full stop at end of a sentence, some only uses them if the sentence ends in the middle of the subtitles), to how they translate it. It could be due to how one is used to TV subtitles in their own country (I, for one, would use '...' if the subtitles is going to be continued in the next subtitle). What Crunchyroll could do is to establish a guideline based on the feedback of their users, and provide it to their translators so that it gets a more uniform translation output. Regarding translator's note subtitle track: There is obviously websites who had done it. I'm not sure if Crunchyroll needs to obtain permission to make their own version of it (Because I knew Viki based their whole business model around fan translations), but the more bigger problem would have to be misuse of it. Because for subtitles you know it is at least for the content, but for translators' note, it is harder for Crunchyroll to tell whether it is necessary or if the translator is abusing it. It adds work to editor during checking, and Crunchyroll is most likely short-staffed on translator/editor front. (Because let's be honest, they always are)

Clips are something I really want on every site now. Even something like the ones Twitch has. I didn't think much from Crunchyroll but even on KZbin as videos get longer being able to share this one small part would be nice. It would also prevent others from uploading those clips (like for Bill Wurtz' jingles).

Dunno if you've already seen it, or if you'll even see this, but Unique did a couple of follow up videos clarifying the exclusives points he was making, showing what I thought was a pretty good case for why IP law was never intended to be used the way online streaming platforms are using them, and even brought up the whole "Console exclusives" argument too.

Do you think it would be outside the scope of Crunchyroll to pay fansubbers to go back and resub shows? They wouldn't be able to sub the theme songs obviously but since fansubbers are so dedicated to subbing shows anyway, they could do it (possibly exclusively) for crunchyroll for a fee on a freelance basis. idk what the fee would be but that would be a cool gesture to the community

The answer is simple. Copyright was originally for only 5 years. It was increased waaay beyond that point out of greed. So don't waste your guilt on pirating an anime over 5 years old.
@Zalis1166 жыл бұрын
The vast majority of piracy takes place with recent/airing anime, not older content. And if a company or artist makes a work that's still enduringly popular after 5-10+ years, why shouldn't they be able to benefit from it? Surely there's a middle ground between 5 years and 75 years or whatever it is now.

@@Zalis116 10 years should be a maximum in my opinion. Most viewers have already watched it so those few people that watch it won't give that much profit.

I don't give a shit if supporting sites like CR promotes bad habits in the industry or whatever. If I think it's worth my money NOW, then it's worth my money now. For me, the value of a platform like CR comes from an ad-free experience (Adblockers don't block everything, which is especially important on mobile where my ad/virus defenses are much weaker), and a fairly reliable video player across multiple platforms (The players on sites like Kissanime have never worked well for me). I can comfortably stream on my computer, my phone, my ps4, even my Vita if I feel like it - that's a valuable feature to me. I still torrent for offline convenience though.

Crunchyroll did have alternate subtitle tracks for the Ace Attorney anime. You could either watch the adventures of Phoenix Wright, or watch the adventures of Naruhodo Ryuichi. Although, this is only one show, and it isn't so much literal translation vs. localisation as it is making it a completely different show.

While I don't have any issues with crunchyroll and I'm glad they exist I don't personally use them and have no intention to, have always downloaded and used programs(taiga for the last few years) to easily watch it while auto updating MAL. Perhaps if I was watching airing shows then watching on crunchyroll would be a bit easier but as I'm mostly watching older/finished shows and often jump between them depending on what I feel like watching it's much easier for me to just download a ton of shows from a private tracker and use Taiga to play them. And as for supporting, I tend to buy merch/BD's(usually just first one as buying whole set is a bit too expensive) of the shows I really like which of course ends up being far more than I could ever give by paying for a crunchyroll subscription.

With 9anime, you can integrate your MAL account. Masterani used to do it with MAL, but they now do it with Kitsu only. You can't do that with KissAnime. 9anime has much faster load times for episodes, cleaner layout, you don't change pages to see new episodes (which means you can watch episodes even FASTER). 9anime just has a better layout. I decided to move to other shows, but that didn't work too. so this is a point i totally agree to. 2. i think it's going to be expensive to give every show multiple translations for every language. so i think this isn't something that's gonna happen 3. Its got better since this video aired. I'm in the UK and there are some shows I can't get here (for me recently I've had to pirate the following One Piece dub, Hunter x Hunter dub & Re:Creators). Between Crunchyroll & Funimation, to which I subscribe, I can usually get 2/3's of the anime I want to watch legally & the remaining 1/3rd I have to pirate as I can't get it anywhere else. Funimation is great for simulcast dubs and Crunchyroll for simulcast subs along with their back catalog, which is decent, there's plenty of shows on both platforms I have waiting to watch. But there's still gap which I find myself stuck and using pirate sites, usually 9anime, to watch these shows.

One thing I desperately want from legal streaming sites is customizable font for subtitles. Fansubs of shows like Lucky Star, Nichijou, etc would use this colorful comic-sans-like font that in a weird way enhanced the viewing experience. Having a font style thats as cute and vibrant as the show itself is better than having the same bland Funimation font for every show ever. A boring font for subs will actually distract me once in a while.

I think my biggest gripe with Crunchyroll is its lack of OVA series and episodes. I understand that many of those are direct-to-home video and not aired, but I think there should be the option to have a sort of pay-per-view for OVA specials at the very least. Maybe it'll only help to further deter the pirates from wanting to subscribe, but for those already subscribed I don't think we'd mind forking over a couple extra bucks to watch an OVA to enjoy more of our favorite shows.

I think the point Uniquenameasaurus was going for with the phone analogy is that phone do the same things generally and you buy them as services for the things they do differently.
