I have a couple of avocado trees in gro pro 40 gallon heavy duty pots with handles. Have them on hand built plant caddie's on 2x4s with metal ball bearing caster wheels. Have 3 6ft 1x1 wood stakes screwed into a triangular pattern into the pot to create both support but also for covering in winter/hot summers (we just had a 7 day 100+ heat wave). They're so big that worms are aggressively breaking down the mulch and causing me to add more. It's its own ecosystem. The size means I've had to only water once a week unless it's hot (like recently). Great problem to have! I've even added food scraps/coffee grounds that are broken down within a few weeks. One is JB the other is Sir Prize. I wanted type B for the three dwarf/compact GEM (2) and Wurtz little cado which are both type A (even though I know little cado is self pollinating). Not a big yard so I wanted to be able to roll them near the trees which are next to a pathway behind a small retaining wall.

Wow, that's a great idea on the plant caddies. Thanks for sharing about the gro pro 40 gallon. Do you plan on keeping your JB and Sir Prize in the gro pro 40 gallon? Are your avo trees bearing good fruit in these gro pro 40 gallons? I will need to look into the gro pro 40 gallon containers and see if it would work better for me than the 24" boxes. It seems like you have a really good system going and you have a nice collection of avocado trees! Thanks for sharing and thanks for watching!

@@johnnysworld-backyardorchard I bought both last fall, one from a local nursery (JB) and the other Sir Prize from Lowe's. Both were pretty scraggly. It was the last JB the nursery had and the two main branches crossed like In n Out palm trees if you know what I mean. Had to cut the smaller one off which made it look worse but a second, better branch has shot out and it's doubled in size so far this year so I'm a happy camper. Suffice to say I wasn't expecting any fruit this year although the JB did flower. Probably for the better since I may have (painfully) pinched them off so they focus on growing. The stakes have served me well for both thick painters tarp to cover in the winter (zone 9b) to protect them the first year as well as an easy way to toss some shade cloth on it during that nasty heat wave we just had. Here's a small album I created if you want to see a visual of their size (5gal buckets in the back for scale). ibb.co/tcpYkwv So far I've been very happy with the results. I've been able to move them around without any issues. They've turned into worm farms too as I've been able to put at least 1lb of food a week just under the mulch and worms go crazy. I didn't add them but must've been worm eggs in there. Only in a pot this large could you pull that off! 😁 The caddie is made with 2x4 pressure treated wood 24"x24". I used copper green (brown color) to seal the wood which is basically water resistant now. Made a few 16"x16" as well for some other pots. The 24"x24" work great for wine/whiskey barrels too. Let me know if you want any info on hardware used.

For your avocados in the large boxes, how often and how much do you water them? I have a similar setup. However every single year they seem to flower like crazy but then end up dropping all the little fruit. I feel like I'm either not fertilizing or watering enough. I've been watering once a week and using a slow fertilizer quarterly.

would you keep the little cado on the ground or box for max production. i heard that because its hybrid, it does equally well in the box as it would on the soil. thoughts?
@johnnysworld-backyardorchard5 ай бұрын
If I had a choice and its for max production, it would have to be in the ground. However, Little Cados do well in larger containers but nothing beats planting them in the ground. Thank you for your question and thank you for watching!

Good choices for box keepers, if you ever get a Gwen it would work too. Agree with you avos are very beautiful trees, I view mine 2 to 3 times each day. My JB like yours isn't very vigerous eithor. Whereas my Ettinger and Sharwil are, but time of planting also effects the initial growth. Thx again for sharing your trees!

Hey Johnny great collection. Can’t wait to see them all fruiting. Wondering are they all pretty young? I watch a lot of Gary’s videos from Laguna Hills nursery and he says if you can get the trees to fruit more they will stay smaller almost dwarf size. Just a thought.
@johnnysworld-backyardorchard4 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul: Thank you for your comment. I think I saw that video as well. I have some bigger avo trees, but on the most part, my avo trees are on the small side. I did hear that as well from some to pick off some fruits when the trees are small to allow the trees to get bigger and some say you should just leave the fruits on until they naturally fall off on their own. I have noticed that if the tree cannot support the fruit level, the fruits do naturally fall off. I have been picking some fruit off my Pinkerton when I see that it will naturally fall off anyway. Thanks for your comment and thanks for watching!

Hi Johnny, Do you know if a hass avocado tree grows aggressively or not? Does it grows upright? And can I keep it under 10 feet by pruning?
@johnnysworld-backyardorchard6 ай бұрын
Hi Tammy, a Hass avocado tree can get quite big. You can prune it down to size but it has a tendency to get big. Here are some great alternatives that are smaller than a Hass and tends to grow upright, a Reed and a Gem. Thank you for your questions and thank you for watching!
@casmarykay84333 жыл бұрын
I'm wondering why you think the containers are limiting the fruit production? Is it a water issue? Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I enjoyed it!
@johnnysworld-backyardorchard3 жыл бұрын
Hi Casmary: it is more because the roots cannot expand out as it would in the ground. All avocado trees do much better in the ground versus containers. I do however grow some of my avocado trees in containers which I plan to keep them in there. A great variety to grow in a container is the Wurtz aka Little Cado, the true dwarf avocado tree. Thank you for your question and thank you for watching!
@frankyancy13474 жыл бұрын
Just transferred my #5 Wurtz to a #15 pot, replaced woody soil with sandy loam. Plant to keep in pot to grow out for awhile, as I've noticed the black pots warm the roots and cause the baby trees to grow more vigorously than if planted directly, have you noticed this?
@johnnysworld-backyardorchard4 жыл бұрын
Hi Frank: I have noticed that my younger avo trees do much better and grow faster when I have them in a #15 rather than planting my #5 directly in the ground. I planted by #5 Reed in the ground and it has not grown much at all whereas my #5 Reed which I transplanted in a #15 is growing much faster. What you said make sense about the black pots and sun and the warming impact on the avo tree. Thanks for your comment on this, very interesting!

@@johnnysworld-backyardorchard thx for the confirmation. I was a little concerned with the wurtz as I washed off 2/3rds of the woody potting soil, prior to repotting, even under full shade it wanted to wilt, but now has caught hold in morning sun/afternoon shade. I look forward to eating as I like the milder flavored avos. THX for the video on them, it got me to get MINE.😁

Thanks for all your videos! I just bought a 5-6 ft tall Carmen in a 15 gallon pot and planned to transplant to a 24” box using Top Pot soil (I’m renting). But someone told me that the large gaps between the wooden box planks, combined with Gary’s sandy soil, would make the water drain too fast and dry out quickly. I live in Manhattan Beach. Do you have that problem with your boxes? He said a 40 gal container would be much better. Also, do you use liners in your boxes? And last question, how long should I expect a 24 inch box to last?
@johnnysworld-backyardorchard3 жыл бұрын
Hello, wow, great choice on the Carmen, that is one of the avocado trees still on my wish list. I don't have any problems with gary best's top pot in the 24" boxes. My avo trees seems to like the 24" boxes and the Gary's Best Top Pot is well draining so I don't worry about root rot. I don't think you will go wrong with a 40 gal container, but I personally like how the 24" box looks. I know a lot of the nurseries have their bigger avo trees in 24" box rather than the plastic containers. The box should be good for a few years until you want to plant the avo trees in the ground. Thank you for your questions and thank you for watching!

Hi PS, I personally like transplanting my Avocado trees from 3 gal to 15 gsl before I transplant it to the ground since I can move it in the shade if it gets to hot until it gets bigger and can withstand the heat. But I guess it depends where you live, I live in S. Cal. Thank you for watching!

Hi Johnny - For a smaller dwarf-type tree planted in the ground, what would you recommend between a Holiday, Wurtz, and Lamb Hass when it comes to overall fruit production and quality of the fruit? (I know lamb Hass isn’t technically a dwarf but it can be kept small with pruning). Thanks much for your videos btw!
@johnnysworld-backyardorchard3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeremy: I really like the Lamb Hass, I find it to be a very strong tree. I also like the Reed. You may want to also consider the GEM which is suppose to produce more than a Lamb Hass and is not as alternate bearing as an Hass. Also, the GEM does not get too large relative to other avo trees. However, the Wurtz is the only true dwarf avocado tree, but I really prefer the GEM, Lamb Hass and Reed over the Wurtz or Holiday and would rather just prune them to size. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching!
