Yes! Someone who recognizes Halo Wars 2 for what it is! A simple, but highly polished and accessible RTS. I feel like this game was made for people like me, who likes to just play RTSs, and doesn't want a bloat of mechanics to get in the way of having fun. And you are right. Free 1 month gamepass codes are super easy to come by. This game is honestly worth it to try it out. And the MS store is still garbo obviously, but the Xbox app is pretty ok and does a lot to hide how bad MS store is.

I'm honestly surprised you were having trouble finding a match. I usually don't have any trouble at all. Could be a time zone thing though since you live in NZ. And I think people underestimate the depth. The different leaders/commanders in this game change up your units quite a bit in this one and in some cases feel like an entirely new faction. That being said, I would love for them to add the Prometheans if they ever make Halo Wars 3.

I think that the cliffhanger ending is basically the setup for the premise of the multiplayer or survival mode. Basically the spirit of fire is now fighting the banished in the long war, which we get to play in the normal matches.

I absolutely love Halo Wars 2, me and my friend come back to it every couple of months, and to our surprise find games within around 1 minute queue time? Which is great considering we though it would be long dead. I love that it offers quick, simple games yet still lets you choose a certain way of playing, like all ground vehicles, a mix of ground, air and infantry etc. I do wish they were making a third instalment, as it is my go-to RTS game. I get that it is very simple compared to the likes of TW and C&C, but I prefer it that way, makes it much easier to just jump in and out of when you have the time.

Great video! I think for a lore-friendly faction, the Prometheans would be easy to implement unit-wise. For base building, however, not so much as they don't seem to have a need for structures? For what's there, they did a good job polishing but it just needed more depth. Would you ever consider doing Universe at War: Earth Assault? I feel like that was a game that had a lot of potential for a console RTS.

Ooh, this game was MADE for creative thinking and sandbox mechanics, I remember blowing my mind when I discovered the after shock of the beam cannon affects air units, and oh how I LOVED the adaptability of every faction, with the novus and the patches, fundamentally altering play style by increasing damage done, and increasing damage taken. Heat sheilds for fire/radiation resistance, at the cost of unit vision range, cool trade offs and a complete avoidance of flat buffs, a beautiful, satisfying rts totes worth reviewing.

I actually got UAW running on both my PC's recently. After it's installed, you just simply need to press enter to get passed the GFWL error message. The game's resolution was messed up at that point, but I was able to change it within the game and exit. Loading the game up after that has had no issues.

One good reason people might wanna try it out is to get the Banished backstory. One of the main antagonist going forward in the main Halo games is you guessed it the Banished. Halo Wars 2 sets them up, why they exist, who they are and so on. So if you are planning to play Halo Infinite in December and want to know more about the Banished this game has you covered.

Great video, I'll have to send it to some Twitch friends who were discussing Halo Wars this past weekend. I'll say the same thing here that I said to them. I've been playing RTS games since I was middle schooler in 1997, starting with C&C, Warcraft 2 and Starcraft. Halo Wars is not those games or any of their successors. Halo Wars is an easy to pick up RTS with that great Halo atmosphere and soundtrack. Is it deep? NO. Is it fun? Absolutely. Is it re-playable? Ehhhh... I personally always recommend it as a good starter RTS. It's not as daunting as some of the other games, so I feel it's a good way to get someone into the genre. It's not going to be the best at teaching the fundamentals, or do a job at teaching you how to play a proper RTS competitively (Warthog spam breaks this game), but if it gets my friends into RTS games, all the better.

This game has a huge issue with unit spam, personally with cutter I go infantry opener into late game transition to vulture spam if I need to just wreck bases.

@@2hot34 I've experimented with that infantry spam, and its borderline unfair how well it plays out, you marines are so cheap and effective that your opponent is forced into spamming marauders/warthogs, and supply for supply marines are more effective, but once your opponent digs in, you can just keep wasting time and mashing power while building 4 air pads, and once you've got him at massed anti infantry, 8 vultures show up on his doorstep asking for rent. And he has nothing to beat them with. You pop main base, and he dc's. Of course, at that point you could allways just play colony and goliath rush, you rank up faster that way, banished you air spam, and unsc cant touch you because snipers

One of my favorite halo games. Pretty fun story, Cool leaders, and the units look much better than the first Halo Wars. Not to mention, The characters are soo good, that they made alot of fans ask for them to appear in mainline halo games. Isobel is the coolest AI since Cortana. I suggest you try to get all the DLC in a pack. Its pretty good stuff. The nightmare DLC is nice sized story, and comes with two leaders, and and awesome survival style mode.

Was playing Back4Blood with a group of friends and coworkers then they all jumped ship after Halo Infinite's Mutiplayer Beta came out. I'm a fan of the lore but I haven't been a fan of any multiplayer game since CoD MW2. That being said, watching people stream Halo Infinite on Twitch made me want to revisit that universe. So I fired up Halo Wars Definitive Edition, I've had it for a while but never played this version. I have played the OG game on Xbox 360 for dozens of hours in the past when it first came out. Especially back in the day when my Xbox Live sub would expire or I was travelling and found myself without internet. Turning on the 360 and playing a few games of Halo Wars was fun. Then I looked for Halo Wars 2 on Steam and was surprise not to find it there, which confused me considering the rest of the Halo Franchise is on Steam. Maybe one day....just like the sequel. And maybe one day, maybe 10 yrs after the release of Halo Wars 2, we get another sequel.

I like Halo Wars 1 and wanted to play 2, but I prefer buying physical games. I ended up buying the physical European Ultimate Edition PC version of the game. Glad I did it because not having an Xbox One aside, it was fun to revisit 1 on the PC which this version came with. The price was surprisingly good too. The seller I found at the time sold it just a bit above the US physical console version. I hope they make a 3!

It can be, but once you get used to using cheap command vehicles to rush to capture points on your half of the map and throw in a piece of AA to secure your resources (preferably a rocket with a cheap supply truck to provide extra rockets), then it's easier to experiment and toy around in it. It at least explains what every weird trait like electronics on jets do when you hover over'em. It probably helps to have someone talk you through it so you don't get rushed by the AI, but I'm confident plenty of your patrons might be up for that if you happen to be

I really liked Halo Wars 2. My favorite game mode was probably Blitz, and my favorite leader was Decimus because he could be deployed by a leader power. Neither game is particularly deep, but they work really well for introductory titles. Although, I do wish that the first game had more unit variety. Luckily there’s plenty of mods that fix the various issues both these games have. These range from simple balancing with a few new suits, to a complete overhaul of the games. Some even add in new factions which adds even more variety. I think it would breath new life into Halo Wars if they were to give 1 crossplay and fix the bugs, and put 2 on Steam. It’s really weird how they haven’t done this because it would give them more money. Something I’d really love to se (but most likely won’t happen) is for them to add in proper modding tools that allow for easily porting in custom assets and making tweaks, as well as a forge mode/map editor so we could make more skirmish maps and even new campaign levels. It’s too bad that they just stopped the Halo Wars story. Luckily we got the Banished in Infinite, but that story hasn’t been fully fleshed out because of the game’s rushed nature (there is a lot of cut content). There’s this really cool video talking about the cancelled Halo Wars 3, and what we think it would have been like (kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5qyYaSwr9lki6s). It’s really interesting, and makes me sad. There were a bunch of cut units from the first game that would have really fleshed it out better. If you’ve ever wondered why the final product is so different from the e3 demo (aside from the fact they always are) there’s this really interesting 20-30 minute video talking about the development of Halo Wars, and even talks about why Ensemble was shut down (kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5jEc2Vnbq6WbsU). The thing I found most interesting was how Bungie was openly hostile to Ensemble making Halo Wars when it wasn’t even their choice at first (if we were talking about that weird Halo mmo Ensemble was making I’d understand their anger fully. I’m very happy that never got made because it would completely mess up the lore/universe). What makes it even weirder is the fact that Halo was originally supposed to be an rts, but later turned into a third person game to an FPS. It was supposed to be like a sci-fi spiritual successor to Myht the Fallen Lords/Myth 2 Soulblighter. Speaking of Myth there’s this really cool retrospective talking about the first game (kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4OyhWSGgtCqj5o). It’s over an hour long, but if you have the time it’s well worth it because it’s so interesting. I think the thing that disappointed me the most about HW2 is the fact that we never got a Jackal pirate leader. I remember back in the day there were all these really cool theories/rumors that we’d get exactly that. People were saying the Hero could have been a ship mistress (Jackals have a matriarchy). You’d have the Halo 4/5 Jackals as the normal troops with shield gauntlets. And the Reach Skirmishers as shock troops. I was so excited, and it never happened. I know this is off topic, but have you heard of the fan made Legend of Zelda rts called Hyrule Conquest? It originally started out at a mod for Total War Medieval 2 called Hyrule Total War, but a few years ago the guy decided to switch over to the engine for 0ad because it allowed him to do a lot more. The guy has been working on this for over a decade, and has plans that will take even longer to implement (he has a lot of really crazy long term ideas that will take a long time to implement because there’s only like 3-5 people working on it in their free time). He has a lot of really good ideas, but occasionally comes up with something truly bizarre that takes the source material into a very weird direction. Great video!

I recently played through halo wars 1 and 2s campaign and a little bit of skirmish and I can’t explain it concisely but halo wars 2 is clearly the better of the 2 games but halo wars 1 had something about it that I can’t explain, there was a charm to it and it’s unbalance chaotic unit spam meta. There’s a lot of things wars 1 did do better, for a start the map design was infinitely better and more unique but you often find yourself with less opinions on how to open up a game. I really liked the map neutral reactors but they usually forced a map to be played a certain way, wars 2 fixed this by making map capture points on the map less important and powerful but still being important enough to make you want to go and capture it. I could go on for a lot longer with comparison points but I’d like to see a video explaining in better detail than I can why both games are so good.

Just like Halo 5 and this was made during the era of Lootboxes. Req Packs became the deal breaker for me. They were literally selling power. and I don't care about the fanbios defending it with the "It's only for One Mode". That mode gets the most development as the rest get ignored simply because it makes the most money (thanks to whales), and when the "Live Service" ends the mode becomes useless and the game might as well be on Nerdslayer's "Death of a Game" video.

Actually the packs for blitz mode had no impact on this game. Blitz mode did not get the most development, far from it actually. The main way to play the game is like a normal RTS and you can find a match within minutes generally. Blitz mode is dead. Furthermore you unlock a ton of packs by playing skirmish and multiplayer. I have hundreds of packs because I've never played a single game of blitz. It just never interested me. So you're doing yourself a disservice if you never give Halo Wars 2 a try.

I always found it funny that the least successful Halo games are actually what Bungie almost made in 2001 with Halo CE. They liked their driveable warthogs and 3D engine close up so they switched the camera from isometric to First-person, and the rest is history.

i never played the game but i think i remember seeing the flood in a survival mode like feature in the game outside of the campaign covenant brutes and coop is a thing there too on almost all of the available game modes? if anyone played it what are the other fun stuff in the game that you enjoyed the most? also is there any mods for the game? i know HW1 got some nice mods

The flood appeared in an Add-on and the Flood Survival thing was one of it's missions. It was still a kind of campaign. There are brutes but it depends on the commander you chose. If you take a Brute Commander then Brutes will be around a lot, otherwise they won't really appear much. And i don't think there are mods because it's an always online game, and it's only on the Microsoft Store which heavily encrypts and denies you access to all gamefiles on a Operating System Level, so modding for Microsoft Store games is almost impossible.

not the biggest fan of the prometheans but would've been cool to get them as well as the flood as factions ingame. still play this game to the day but having those extra factions would've been great and as the games multiplayer doesn't seem to care about timelines (Johnson and the Arbiter being present) you could've had the Didact or Cortana feature as leaders as well as the gravemind

One thing i didn't like about Halo Wars 2, Awakening the Nightmare. Is that it didn't give you the option to play as the flood, in Skirmish mode.

I didn't like the limited cutscenes, and that the campaign felt pretty much like a how to for the different multiplayer games. besides that I do like the new mechanics

Maybe it was just your server, but i find matches in 2 to 2 minutes, i would recommend HW2 to anyone who likes RTS game or just Halo. Very fun game

@@easucks1776 Oh no its a PC player thing. On PC it used to be this way that you had about 10 seconds delay after giving an order and the AI actually executing it. The lags were insane, i hope thats somewhat fixed.

The issue for me is that it runs on UWP which is a terrible system, no matter how much Microsoft tries to push it, like it runs constantly in borderless window mode. I run my audio through an AVR which means windows thinks its a second display at a different resolution (which it isn't it's just an audio hdmi channel) so the game doesn't load properly unless I duplicate displays and fart about way too much. It's not quite on Denuvo levels of annoying but still. On any other client (well except maybe Battlenet or Origin as that's always breaking) I'd be fine with.
