Sure the story of the first couple Devil May Cry games weren't anything to write home about but Devil May Cry 3 had an excellent story and character development. The story of Devil May Cry 4 was underwhelming because the development time of that game was cut but Devil May Cry 5 ended up having an excellent story as well.

william41017 P1 and P2 are so so so outdated and hard to get through, and nothing like the rest of the series, but both P2 games at least have a pretty good story, so if you’re willing to play a very tough to get through type of game for modern times to see a good story than sure play it. P3 on the other hand is the first game in the series that follows the formula of P4 and P5, it’s definitely got some issues, for instance unless you’re playing the PSP version you can’t control your party member in combat and have to rely on their AI, and if you are playing the PSP version you do get to control them but you have to sacrifice other things such as overworld character models, the bonus “final chapter” of the game, and you don’t get Anime cutscene like in the PS2 version, personally I’d recommend the PS2 version so you can see all the content but if you really hate the idea of not being able to control your party members than the PSP version is an option.
