Finally someone gets it. This book isn’t supposed to be judged from the point of view of an adult, it’s targeted at teens, and does it’s job great. I still reread it to this day, to me it includes a lot of what I love about fantasy, without a lot of the downsides so it’s perfect. I always knew it was derivative, and never cared ! Saphira is just so badass 😂

For me too this was the series that got me into fantasy :) ~ I thought Nasuada was such an amazing character (reading Trial of the Long Knives is a vivid memory), and I was also not for the Arya and Eragon romance. In fact, I felt the most nuance and subtle romance came from Nasuada and Murtagh; maybe because it was never fulfilled within the story, sort of like a longing of what could've been. I mean, I could be off since it's been years since I read the novels, but I remember those moments and feelings in particular :)

I was so annoyed with that trial! She is a warrior. Why is she putting herself out of action for weeks, months, in the middle of a war? Also the flogging of Roran. They are trying to defeat Galbatorix because he is cruel and unjust, and an all-round a**hole. So they decide to behave like cruel and unjust a**holes. If anyone was at fault in that debacle, it wasn’t Roran, who killed 192 enemies and saved his men. It was Nasuada, who put whatever-his-name-was in command.

This, redacted, Books of Pellinor, and the Abhorsen series were the ones that really got me into fantasy books. I never finished the Inheritance Cycle though because I only ever got the first two books and didn't have the means to get the others. Not sure if I'll go out of my way to finish the series or not though. Also I watched that movie adaptation and boy did I hate it!

I’m in my 30s and just read this book series for the first time within the past year. I thought the series was incredible! I don’t understand the hate for them, obviously I can see the similarities with other books and movies, but it doesn’t take away from the story for me.

this series has a special place in my heart tbh. it was also my inteoduction to fantasy when i was about 9yo. the movie was on tv one summer and my dad run to me and changed the channel and made me watch it and then gave me the books he had to read and it's one of my favorite memories. definitely where my love for books comes from 😂

Anyway, I remember reading these, and enjoying them at the time, but I read them as they came out and there was a gap long enough between (I think) Eldest and Brisingr that I pre-ordered Brisingr almost out of habit then received it and... never read it. I think in the meantime I'd grown out of my love for the stories. I remember precisely one thing happening, and that is it. I guess it's safe for me to say then that they had very little overall lasting impact on me. I'd say my gateway into fantasy was Eva Ibbotson's books, to be honest! The Haunting of Hiram, Which Witch? and other books like that.

I read this as a teenager. I almost completely forgot the plot, so I’m rereading it now. As someone who isn’t a big reader anymore, I love it. I read it on the bus on the way to work, during my lunch break, at home. It really helps the time go by quicker.

I think Eragon was my intro to this type of familiar/generic fantasy but I still didn’t like most of those tropes (besides the dragon riding) so I think I am just forever in the minority of not liking the farm boy chosen one trajectory of a story and I find that worlds like this with elves and dwarves can be fun but aren’t my favorite for some reason. And I can’t even say its because I have read or seen too many, cause I really haven’t. My intro to just reading fantasy was HP and his dark materials and his dark materials led me into Sanderson and here I am 😅

Question: what is the redacted series? Is it a literal series of books called The Redacted Series or is it a nickname for something else? Googling it is proving difficult.

I actually hate the audio books because it doesn't sound at all like I would have done it let alone how I imagine it would sound especially because I don't like how the narrator narrates Eragons Dragon as a sort of croaky deep voice rather then a feminine vocal sound which is what I pictured in my head for how she sounded

But why? Eragon and Arya very slowly become close and its nice to see. Eragon is 16 or so. A 16 year old boy CAN get obsessed with a beautiful woman who showed up in his dreams and who he saved. I think its quite cute and boys can relate to it a lot - getting rejected. He was never out of order so i dont see it as annoying at all.

I read this recently in my mid 30s. I remember thinking it was too long as a kid so never bothered with it even though I love fantasy. But did the whole series now because I could listen to it as an audio book on a high speed! I enjoyed a lot of it because I was so impressed a teenager wrote it (and I’m a teacher so that adds to my appreciation) but also basically zoned out and did not pay attention to huge parts of it because they are indeed too long. Some themes I thought were really great for YA and other parts were a bit of a reach and not as great as I know the author meant them to be. Then I read the authors newest book based after the series and I have to say it was a much better book overall and I could really see how much his writing improved after 20 years of growth. Not a novel that should win awards or be required reading, but enjoyable and better at getting its messages across. I wouldn’t recommend to adults unless you love fantasy, although I will recommend to students as it is a good YA read that is actually appropriate for children because some kids are reading fourth wing which they absolutely shouldn’t be and I’d suggest this instead, even though I actually think forth wing is a more well written book, although it’s sequel is not great. A bit better as a dragon riding themed fantasy novel for adults only.

I didn't really obsess over genres when I was younger, I mainly just read whatever looked cool to me. I did read the Redacted Series (like everyone my age) but it was never my favourite. I think the fantasy series that were most influential on me were His Dark Materials and Earthsea. As an adult I then rediscovered my love of the fantasy genre through Game of Thrones which led me to reading A Song of Ice and Fire and many more since then!

I read this series for the first time when I was 20. I loved it and it’s on par with my favourite fantasy series’ ever. Yes, I can see the comparisons to other series. I don’t care. I love the characters, love the magic, love the races and the world building. It’s incredible and no one can change my enjoyment of it

As this was my intro into Fantasy, I don't have the problem of feeling that its stolen elements from prior books. But after reading the Fourth Wing books I'm seeing them take a lot from the Inheritance Cycle. Mental Bonding between Rider and Dragon, Magic with extreme limitations but alleviated/enabled by bonding to dragons, magic inherently tied to dragons, a social structure where dragons don't answer to humans/anything, dragons refusing to even acknowledge humans that aren't their rider, mental fortitude/shielding as an essential skill, ancient language as the most accessible way to access magic (runes) etc, etc...

The series that got me into fantasy? The Lord of the Rings. Nitpick here: I’m a third of the way through the Inheritance audiobook, and there is a priesthood with novices, and every time the word ‘novices’ is required, the book calls them ‘noviciates’. Cringe every time I hear it.

This is about as good a fantasy novel as The Philosophers Stone was. Both were aimed at kids and both went on to have successful series of novels (of course we all know which was more successful).

Dragon Lance got me into fantasy, I had read Harry Potter and Artemis Fowl and loved them but dragon Lance got me into high fantasy. Even the main story books are a little rough (though some of the branch series are excellent) but they were my gateway into fantasy. I read Eragon in Middle School and finished the series as they published (college by this time). They just don't stand up once you read them as an adult and don't stand up next to the stories that Eragon derived from so heavily. To me that is the biggest weakness, the copied elements are not altered or improved in any significant way. When you read the books that inspired Paolini it sucks the life out of the story. Also the end two books were very weak.

When I was 7 I choosed the first book of Les dragons de Nalsara (it was never translated in english) I loved it and I read the entiere serie, it was what got me into fantasy, the woman who writted this serie translated Eragon in french and took some inspiration for how the dragon human bound work and the fact that the magie is a language so when I read Eragon I was not amazed by the dragons and the magic system, and the universe seemed was really generic to me and the story felt like a bad ripoff of the Star Wars original trilogy, (with the orinality that it fuse Han Solo with Darth Vader)...

Eragon was my first taste of high fantasy with languages, cultures, locations, history/lore. It made the world feel alive and lived it and for a 13 - 17 year old, that's wonderful since Tolkien for me was a bit far out there until i was an adult.

I read lots but I look at the Inheritance Cycle as one of the key series to get me into fantasy. I read it around the same time as The Hobbit and The Lord of the Dings. I have since reread the latter a few times but never went back to Eragon, I’ve thought about it a few times, I’m too scared it won’t hold up to my memory.

The Spiderwick Chronicles was what got my into fantasy in the 4th grade. Sadly, i didn’t like reading again/ pick fantasy back up again until after college. I picked up SW Heir to the Empire in 2020. But it was The Fellowship Of The Ring that brought me back to fantasy in 2022

You are talking so fast it id hard to understand you but i appreciate your openion. I got an idea of the series from a what if.... It was a long but unfinished one but it got me really interested about the story's conclusion. I am not a book worm. I actually baraly read book, the books i read were most likely droped because i either didn't have time to continue reading them consistently or i forgot what happened previously and didn't had the drive to continue reading. I might give this series a chance because the person that wrote what if did a damm god job at it and i actually want to read the real story without alteration.

Aside from the redacted series, this series was probably my first proper intro to fantasy with magic and dragons and such! Redwall was around the same time for me as well. I have a lot of nostalgia around Eragon as well but ended up not able to get through my reread a few years ago bc of the way that physical disability was handled in Eldest. I still have all my copies and love them for what they were but won’t be rereading them anytime soon

When I first read the inheritance cycle, I was an old hand at fantasy genre, and I found this entire series to be nonsensical. Christopher Paolini was a silly, very naïve little boy when he wrote this, and that shows in writing in the characterization, and in the pacing, as well as the entire plot line. There are so many plot holes in this series that it’s not even something that you can count. For the most part, I found Aragon to be funny, but after eldest, I think Christopher Paolini truly lost the thread of what he was writing, he should have asked older people to give him some real advice, and grow up a little and learn a little bit more about how people interact with each other, so I never saw where this Book Series panned out into an epic. It did have the beginning of it, but it never manifested after eldest.
