Non-native English speaker here. I have a habit of reading books in English to practice the language, since in my country I almost never get to speak it. I want to read this series so badly, but I am currently drowning in work. Saving it for when I am done. You're really selling it here, now I am even more curious.

I just finished the farseer trilogy today and kind of want to just continue with Fitz.

I will say some stuff in Golden Fool will be a bit confusing without Liveship but you can probably find a summary online to fill in those blanks if you really want to skip it

I decided I would annoy myself if I didn't read in order so I started liveships and I'm not regretting it. Thank you

This was awesome, Angela! I finally have my copies of Liveship and am committed to at least starting the series before the end of the year! I'm glad to hear that you loved it so much. Can't wait to be able to discuss them in more detail :D

One complaint I often hear about the Farseer Trilogy is that Regal is a black/white villain, and they would have liked a more morally grey person in that role. The main villain of the Liveship Traders is *a lot* more complex and grey than Regal, I think many would argue that he's one of the best written characters in RotE. There's also another Regal-like villain to fill that "love to hate" garbage human role, but he gets a lot less page time.

Oh boy is there that garbage human 🤣 man I don't know if anyone else has ever made me as angry as that person has. But yes I think the main villain is one of my favorite villains ever.

Hello. This trilogy looks interesting. Do I have to read any of the other Robin Hobbs books to understand this trilogy?

I knew when I clicked that this was going to cause me agony. I want to continue it - but I decided to get the whole Realm of the Elderlings under my belt, which means starting at the beginning. It's my next big series I'm going to tackle and then I can go back and watch all the other chats that are spoilery. I wish I could tell you how heartwarming it is that you love this series so much. :D

Definitely agree some of the best moments in the series are just really tense conversations. No one knows how to play up drama and pull at my emotions like Robin Hobb. I would also love this series to get special editions or an adaptation! I'll also second your opinion that you can read Liveship on its own or before Farseer. I wouldn't recommend reading Tawny Man without both Farseer and Liveship under your belt tho. Good luck with the rest of the series I hope you enjoy it as well! Tawny Man is fantastic but the nice thing about RotE is it's split into parts so you don't have to read them back to back.

I do really appreciate how the whole thing is split into parts so I have natural satisfying breaking points.

Just finishing up Farseer this week. After my experience I have no doubt I will have a Hobb book in my hands every month until I've finished with RotE! Perfect timing on this video drop. Robin Hobb's prose seems to call no attention to itself and almost gets out from in between the reader and the story without much intervention. Its not plain, its not fancy. It just tells the story in the most efficient way I might've ever experienced. I'm also kind of glad to take a break from Fitz for a bit, whom I mostly love, but is like that friend who's ALWAYS in dire straits, and you kind of wanna grab their shoulders and shake em lovingly into a state of self examination.

I think you described her prose really well, and I liked it even more in this series while we get to watch her write in third person limited instead of first person!

Okay but my real question - what do you think of the Rain Wilds series?? Mainly because that’s the only one I’ve read haha
@LiteratureScienceAlliance

I have no read that one yet haha I need to read Tawny man first, I have basically been reading this Realm of the Elderlings series in chronological order but most of my friends seem to like Rain Wilds the least but still enjoy it??

Yea with how much you connect to characters you will probably get even more frustrated than I was, although I did love where everything ended up. If you ever do want to try it and want to know any specifics let me know!

There are lots of those! Like maybe save it for when you are in your fantasy mood again since it really scratches that epic fantasy itch (atleast for me) but the pacing is way better than stormlight in my opinion and WORLDS better than AQ

Ahhhhh, I want to read this trilogy so badly! I've never read any Hobb before and I'm trying to decide if I should start here or with Farseer. I thought I'd be able to pick the paperbacks up easily from used book stores, but used copies of her books are surprisingly hard to find in person!
@derrisreaditbefore

Start with Farseer. Despite Farseer and Liveships being about separate characters, in separate locations, at separate times - there are things that connect them in ways you won't fully 'get' until much later. So while it won't change the experience of either trilogy if you read them the other way around, you inadvertently spoil yourself for a Tawny Man revelation, muddle the order in which a mystery is understood in the Tawny Man, and have the time line out of sync for the Rain Wilds Chronicles. Finally, while many readers say the Liveships is the 'better' trilogy, most of those will also admit that Fitz from Farseer is their favourite character. Whichever you end up reading first, I hope you enjoy it as much as I have (and many times) since first discovering Robin Hobb.

I can always tell when an author is well loved by how few of their books I can ever find at used bookstores. Hobb, and Guy Gavriel Kay are two that I always searched for but could never find
