After reading the whole series, and with the long wait for Winds of Winter [6?7 years now?] I was reluctant to re-read them all back to back. What I did instead, which has given me a very different perspective - and far deeper appreciation of the story as a whole, is re-read each 'character' as a novel. The books [for those that have not read them] are written in character POV for each chapter. So I have re-read Jon's story as a single narrative, then Arya's, then Dany's, then Sansa's then Tyrion's etc spanning through all of the books. It really is well worth doing this as each characters story arc becomes a lot clearer, their motives etc deepen. And the whole saga takes a very different form in the mind.

sander You can't judge the quality of the books or the show on basic characteristics they usually have. Shows are shows, books are books. Quality of books is so much more better than the show. (I'm talking only about Game of Thrones). Anyway, I have to say something important. I've read 5 books of "A Song of Ice and Fire". When I watched all those same events in the show, I didn't feel it so much as I did in the books. Well, you will probably say that it's because I already spoiled the show to myself with books. Alright, then. But when I watched season 6 of Game of Thrones (whose plot still hasn't been revealed in the books), I barely felt a small difference between watching that season (where I didn't know what's going to happen) and previous seasons (where I knew what was going to happen). Quality of the show fades as the seasons come. When I read this same material in the books, it's still going to be very interesting no matter I know the plot already. It's because George can make revealed events more interesting than D&D can do with unrevealed events. Btw, I've already read some chapters from "The Winds of Winter" and it's so much more interesting than the season 6.

It's good practice for your brain to try keeping track of an expansive story, one way to keep back dementia. But I think it's harder to keep track of and, less pure, if your cluttered up with many other fictional stories at the same time. It's a balancing act choosing what to fill your brain with - sharing some movies, shows, games, books, etc. with friends can be good for the social life, but too many dilutes the experience - so talking about Asoif with other book/show fans, if available, will improve the retention.

In the middle of A Storm of Swords (book 3) after starting the ASOIAF book series over a year ago (after binging seasons 1-5, waiting on 6) & wow. Having watched the show first & THEN reading makes it much better in my opinion. Putting faces with characters, events etc. & SO MANY DIFFERENCES. The Hound defeating Dondarian & Arya running off in the show happened rather quickly. So far in the book, it's been a couple hundred pages & Arya is still with the brotherhood, who are taking her to her mother (instead of in the show, the hound) Arya meets a dwarf, grey haired woman, who claims she hasn't been kissed in 1,000 years!! She has dreams of the future, & trades Beric visions for a wine skin & a song from Tom Sevenstrings. "Sour wine for sour news" she says. "The king is dead. The Kraken king. I dreamt him dead." Only Balon Greyjoy hasn't died yet! The books have so so so much extra in them, & they're FANTASTIC while waiting on new seasons. I re-watch the whole series while still continuing reading on. Catching new info along the way every time. Anyway. I'm rambling now. #CleganeBowl

More characters, different quotes, challenges unseen in the tv series, and also a greater insight to what our main characters are thinking and why they react the way they do. Just like LOTR, when you first saw the movies you immediately wanted more... and so the extended editions came out, but you still wanted, nay, needed* more... how do you get more? I'm just about on the end of my second read-through and would recommend everyone should read the series. Do not let the number of pages and words put you off. It's an easy read but one that should be approached in a slow way. That is, don't make the mistake I did which was, because I was enjoying it so much, I just ploughed through it, which resulted in me missing some of the interesting subtext and other aspects that were being set up for the reader to puzzle out. Not that I've minded the re-read. In fact, I've enjoyed it more because I've had more time to dwell and consider each character more.

Yes you definitely should read the books, but if you've only watched the show up to this point probably best to hold off until it's done. I made the mistake of reading them back in 2014 & since then & season 5 onwards I haven't been very invested in the show because it pales in comparison to the superior story of the books, especially since season 5, the first 4 seasons were good enough adaptations for the most part but beyond that they really haven't been. Probably better to be ignorant of that until the show's over for those of you who haven't read the books.

I watched all 6 season of the show last summer and started reading the books soon after to get my fix of Game of Thrones. So far I've read the first two books in the series, and honestly I wish I'd read at least the first one before watching the show. It's just so much easier to keep track of all the new characters that are introduced and the relationships between them. I was pretty lost for most of the first season of the show because it was so difficult to learn about all the characters, houses, and histories of Westeros, so I would definitely recommend reading the books.

No question about it you should definitely read the books. I forget the names of the individual books but the last one is the weakest. Most of the time you are moving from character to character through the chapters but the last one we start seeing the point of view of some different ones and we completely forget about a good number of the main characters. I am hoping the last two are more like the rest.

I had read the first book once before I started watching your videos. and after watching one of your theory videos on Jon Stark, and a theory on how he'll learn of his true parentage, I re-read the book.. you mentioned that Jon had a dream about entering the crypts, and that there's a theory about him entering the real thing when he's still at Winterfell, as King of the North with Sansa. I had somehow overlooked that dream before, but now that I'm taking my time with it, and fter re-reading the book, it makes sense. and a lot of other things are becoming clear

I was one of those people who saw the show first and absolutely loved it, and I hadn't been a big reader for quite some time in my life so the idea that I couldn't pick up those books and read them from beginning to end was definitely very much in my head. But yeah, if any of you thinks you may want to read the books chances are very good that you do. I started off with a paperback, myself, of the first one for jury duty. Then I quickly bought a Kindle and finished it and the rest of the books. It doesn't take as long as you might think it will. And it's phenomenal, even better arguably than the show if only cause you get so much more.

I started reading the books before I started the series; which I believe was on its fifth at the time. If you LOVE the show you really need to try to read the books or at least listen to them. Like the Harpy says, you will be really surprised about how much more story there is. The show could not possibly handle all the info we get from books. I also agree to take it slow, I was so caught up I flew thru them and am now re reading them to pick up on all I missed the first time. I got The World Of Ice And Fire ( the history of Westros) for Christmas and am really enjoying it, the illustrations are AMAZING!!

Considering your suggestion that the books enhance and flesh out characters and lore, I'm taking your advice. Take care.

Tha, i bought the 5 books in June 2016 and just finished them last week. I loved them but still it took over half a year for me to finish - when also shortly after Pokemon Go (which i still play passionately) came out. So you can easily guess, what most of my free time was like this past half year^^ Anyways, I really do recommend you reading the books. I only started reading them after I've watched all TV-Episodes and it really helped me to grasp connections and events as well as peoples motives and personalities alike. It goes so much deeper and has many story-lines that never appeared on the TV show (which i can understand why but still don't like it). I also really loved GRRM's writing style, he is so detailed about clothes, appearances, thoughts and so on that it was very easy for me (even as a non-english-native speaker) to fall into this world and keep loving the story more and more. It is true that the books are a lot more violent and aggressive than the TV show, but it gives you also a better hint on this unique universe.

After watching the show for so long I finally decided to read the books, so I splurged and bought myself the pretty leather bound boxset from Amazon. So far I've read "A Game of Thrones" and am currently working my way through "A Clash of Kings" , which about half way through I starred reading Dany and Arya's chapter's only ,they're my favorites on the show, and this has proved true even more so in the books. Now that I've read all of their chapter's I'm picking up where I left off in the middle of the book.

You should most definitely read the books, there's just so much more to discover about the characters because it's written from their points of view and it feels like an entire different story than the show, so even if you watched every season, you'll get something new. Plus there's so much more detail about the whole known world, so much in fact that you'll pick up much of it only on the re-read(s). Haven't found any other books that are so worth re-reading, not only because they're enjoyable but because you discover something new every time. I'm at my fifth readthrough right now and I still keep discovering! So get to the closest book store (or online) and order those books now if you haven't already!

Hiya Last Harpy, first, I love your videos, they're entertaining and interesting, they even made me a lil more motivated for reading the books (before this video aired). Second, I wanted to ask, have you ever made a video or even mentioned why Viserys is not a real dragon? I liked his character, don't even know why, but I think I never really understood why he wasn't what he thought he was. If it's known why, then I apologize for my lack of knowledge. Thanks a lot if you'll answer :) Keep up the great work!

My wife gave me the first five book collection along with the world of ice and fire (the latter is the only one I've finished and it's awesome) I want to read the book series AFTER the show is finished. As a buddy of mine gave me a heads up that I should look at the TV show and the books as "similar" stories in different universes.

Yes. loved the books and the extra detail. Please could you do a video about Ned Starks mum? I can't find any info anywhere about what happened to her?

@licensedtochill48828 жыл бұрын
the books much more detailed... if you're the kind of person that needs backstory then you need to read these books TV show doesn't even come close to the entire world in the book. the TV show is a watered-down condensed version. the books do justice to the story

I'm an avid reader and I started to read the series last summer just after the 6th season ended... It's been tough to read and sometimes I see myself struggling with the characters there are so many differences regarding their personality that I think I'll finish the one I'm curretly reading (A Storm of Swords 1: Steel and Snow) and call it a quit...

*Always read the books!* First review of Game of Thrones is from Robert Jordan. Read his Wheel of Time series, then think about how they say thrones and kingdoms existed before the first men. Between the two series, its almost seems they could be tied together. A lot of things are shared between the two series, even the winter and summer.

I really like to read, but I listened to the audio books whenever I could while doing other things. They are different, but interesting and so much more detail is in them.
@MrFlo57878 жыл бұрын
If the books are to much "work" go for the audio book. If you get it as an MP3 based version you can copy it to your phone and have it with you in the car or any other kind of travel, walking the dog...just anywhere where you have access to your phone ;)

I've actually been starting to read since I got them all for Christmas. I almost never read the books, neither before nor after. These books are dialogue heavy and don't get overly descriptive with the visuals while giving enough, which is my personal favorite mix. I love the books so far and they are the best thing for holding me over until the next season.

I started in about November and I'm in the half of clash of kings and i really say yes. There are lot's of more not so MUST NEED characters that are missed (Desmon Hullen Aeron) but in future very needed characters like Victarion Arianne Martell Doran Martell has way bigger plotline so I think books are very good.

The World of Ice and Fire book is a hardbound book that is a monster to handle. I purchased it and have yet to read it. I simply don't find it a book to sit and read comfortably. I have rather severe arthritis in both my hands and I can't hold onto the book without being in agony. Can you post a link for audiobooks that won't break the bank? As for reading the other books (especially the five) I agree completely. They pull you in and you can't stop reading. They fill in a lot of holes and also give you the real story the author wrote.

Well, Honestly The books are way more better( and it has a novel tone which fans of got won't get). IT would be great and people can understand more about asoiaf if they read the books. The characterisation of the books are better.(in the tv show the fellings of the characters are not completely shown)

There is also a graphic novel of the books. A Game of Thrones has one. I just read the first part. There are also graphic novels of the dunk and egg stories.

Can you do videos on characters we only meet in the books... so many interesting characters that only get a little bit of book time but have a lot of insight/foreshadowing... for example the old woman that meets with the brotherhood without banners in Aryas chapter in A Storm of Swords.
@esmeralda2548 жыл бұрын
Or just cool things like the word "tansy" that hoster Tully uses and then eventually we find out the meaning from Lysa.... ;) still love your videos though!
@edgain16308 жыл бұрын
Tansy is also an herb that is used to make moon tea. The implication is that Lysa Tully was given a 'cleansing tea' that forced her body to abort her first children (and may have lead to her 'mental state' later in life).

Poorstargazer23 I listened to Clash of Kings (book 2) on audible. I didn't love the narrator but it was so nice and convenient to have the audio book. I got through it so much faster that way.

If you are into the genre and into ASOIAF I think you should read the books to enjoy the rich story they tell and to benefit in terms of personal development. As we all know, reading well-written literature improves one's vocabulary and language skills, and encourages to think about the ideas discussed in the book. It can't even be compared to the passive entertainment of watching the show.

i've recently started rewatching the series a thirt time, in season one jhon saves the commander from a white walker, we know the knight king brings them alive and that they can't pas the wall. how is it possible it comes to life in castle black south of the wall? could it be a literal barrier for 'the winds of winter', it literally stops the cold that brings the withe walkers and death? haha but it's probably be magic and not science i know
