I have the exact same Spectrum router. Some ISPs may not allow you to use your own router. Spectrum allows you to choose from a list of pre-approved routers. I think the Spectrum router is pretty good, and the plug-and-play, officially supported benefit is worth the cost to me. For the average homeowner I think using your own equipment might be too difficult. This is a great channel and deserves more subscribers!

Always buy your own equipment. The sales staff and/or technician will convince you to rent the ISPs so they can get the commission.

i mean if your just using the internet for basic use then leasing it would make sense.

I purchased my router from Verizon when I started my service. They had a deal going on and we have had them for over 5 years and they would have charged us $12 a month for a rental. We have already saved money also they still support our tech issues since it is their branded router
@mynameisearl3 жыл бұрын
We don't have to rent routers in the uk. They're usually given with said contract and returned if you leave said broadband supplier
@franklingoodwin3 жыл бұрын
And some like Sky Broadband only allow you to use the routers they provide for some reason. They block others

Just added the Spectrum 300m plan, they waived the 5 dollar a month rental fee.

Not necessarily, routers are expensive now and they can be defective. If you buy your own router you are taking some risk. I think renting is a reasonable option.

I was genuinely looking to buy the Verizon router from the specs it looks pretty good but if you have FiOS and live in a place that will have FiOS for more than two years just buy your router you'll probably get more for less or if you match their price you can get pretty beefy solutions. I bought a used orbi system for FiOS and it works like a dream.
@steb0ne3 жыл бұрын
Yeah Verizon used to actually sell the Orbi system. That new router specs are pretty good but you can get something better for the price

I have RCN 1 gb Internet in NYC after cutting the cord. My monthly total is $48, which I'm grandfathered into their $3 per month 3.1 1 gig router/modem. For that money I'll rent.

Spectrum waives the $5 a month if your on their gig plan. I also was able to upgrade to the their new WIFI 6 router for free.

Most people don't need a $250 to $300 router, Just go buy a nice $100 one and it will pay for itself in a year or two

If the modem doesn't have fragment threshold You should buy that it have or just put Beacon interval to 450

How many devices can the Spectrum wifi connect? Some of my speakers aren't connecting or dropping, so I am thinking the router is not handling all of them.

The spectrum varies the channel that it operates on. Plus it's dual channel. And it's a newer router. Then as the routers change you get a better router via Spectrum. Whereas you have to buy another router. For now I'll lease a router. And save myself the problems. Spectrum does a great job on service. I'm happy with them. Now what is this new Instagate free wifi? A good question. I didn't like how it seems to take over everything, so I deleted it. And like all free things they wind up charging you down the road. So, I'm paying Spectrum more money per month.

There is one thing that you didn't cover that people need to consider. The wired ports on the spectrum router are good up to 6 gigs, and at least for your old lynksys, router is only good for 1 gig. Some of the new routers have 10 gig networking.

I have AT&T and I don't have a choice they will not let me use my own equipment so I am stuck paying the $10 a month for as long as I have their service so in the long run I end up paying for the price of the router over and over and over and that's their intention is there a way of squeezing more money out of you

I believe a new law passed at the beginning of the year that blocks them from not allowing you to own your own equipment

I'm still using an old ATT gateway router from when they let you actually own the equipment instead of forcing you to rent it.

You can get a decent router for around below 100USD that can saturate a gigabit service, don't know why you would rent the router

I'm actually looking for the 2.4 part. I'm building a smart home and unfortunately all the appliances are only 2.4G. That's because of it's ability to penetrate walls and floors. You see I'm on Spectrum but I still ha v e the old one peace Ubee fromTime Warner. I have nearly 20 things in my smart home right now and i have e now hit Ubees level of SUCK! So I'm trading it in for the new two peace. I have another router now, a Wavlink 1800 but I'm not sure it will suffice. I gave about $75 for it so it's not high end. I taught Computer Science in college for 10 years so i know what I'm doing. The set access for the Wavlink is not very extensive. Yeah,you can play with DNA and Subnets and Mesh but not so much. If the Spectrum is better in the 2.4 range then thats for me. As they play wit h 6 and so on i don't want to buy an expensive now just to have to buy another in a couple of years to stay up with the home tech. It's easy to just trade out for the new! Thanks for you doing the testing for me!

If you Internet Provider is Comcast and you need Unlimited Data you have no choice but go with their Modem. Performance is good but hate paying $20 a month for something I never own.

What about ISP that say you have to use their modem router ????
@InspireAndSimplify3 жыл бұрын
If the ISP is cable-based, you can always buy your own cable modem and WiFi router. If they say you “have to” rent theirs, they’re normally just trying to make more profit off you.

The scumbags at Spectrum will allow you to turn off the public wifi feature through their app, but it turns itself right back on when you close the app. Grimy bastards.

I have a spectrum modem , this new router from spectrum wouldn’t even work with its own modem, the spectrum router is trash. Spent two days on phone with spectrum and they said it was the modem, wrong, I rehooked my Linksys it was connected right away. Spectrum doesn’t even fix their own junk.
@johndong75244 ай бұрын
I hear your pain. I went through hell trying to make their faulty equipment work. I had to change the equipment three times and still I need to reset it every two weeks because my Internet goes out on a regular basis. It seems Spectrum doesn't fix returned equipment. They just pass it on to someone else.
