Pre-order is one thing that self-published authors typically go back and forth before publishing their books. Hopefully, this video gives some insight regarding pre-orders and will help you better make the decision as to set it up or not.

Thanks. I really appreciate the perspective! By the way it would help me to follow some of the details about Amazon rank if you could use unambiguous terms for rank, like “better” or “worse.” Unfortunately because low numbers are high ranks (like golf scores), words like “higher” and “lower” and “your rank will drop” can be pretty confusing to a naive listener. It would help to stick to words like “is better” “gets better” “is worse” “gets worse” “improves your rank” “hurts your rank” to avoid ambiguity. Thank you again for your insights!

This is a good topic! I’ll add it to my list. Yes, non-KU readers can preorder. If those enrolled in KU preorder they’ll pay right away and actually purchase it. Most readers who read in KU wait until release day.

This was really helpful. Do you think it's not a good idea to run a preorder period if you don't have a social media following? I think if I run a preorder nobody will preorder. Not even my family and even less my friends.

Having preorder without a following can be helpful if you’re learning how to do ads. Then you know directly that your ads are profitable and you have a good one setup. Also, it could give you a link to share around if you’re actively trying to grow your presence before release. There are advantages to it even if you don’t have a following!

We still setup preorder to this day and I’d say it’s even more beneficial with how social media is in disarray. A lot of KU authors also now use preorders. Hope that helps!

Hey! So I’ve been strictly kindle unlimited between my self published titles and the ones through my publisher. I’m releasing book 1 in a brand new series April 2nd and plan on doing a short preorder. After watching your video I kind of want to throw them up on other sites and go wide for a short period of time but I’m scared LOL. With the release a couple of weeks away do you think it’s too late? Sorry I’m babbling.

Author Evan Grace I don’t think it’s too late as long as your book is done. You’re supposed to upload the final copy (I believe) 10 days before release. :) It will give you something to push out to your newsletter/social media in the meanwhile. And helps you also somewhat start building an audience on the other sites along with allowing people who just don’t have access to amazon to get it! :) Also it might be slow going because you do only have a few weeks to push it so don’t get discouraged. Hi There, thanks for the info - I have 2 questions. Sorry for being dumb here. Question1. - What exactly is preorder? For example, let us say today's date is 1st January 2019. I set up my book for preorder on amazon and the date I specify be 1st April 2019. Can someone buy the book between the time window that falls between 1st Jan to 1st April? The book would be released in April so how can someone buy the book beforehand the release? Question2 How can I see list of books (by other Authors) on Amazon that are ready for preorders? I suppose that whenever I see any such book on Amazon, it should not be available to me to be bought right away, as the release date sits in the future. But all the books I see, they seem available to be bought. Then how to make out if the book is a preorder book or not?

Hey there!! That’s not dumb questions. :) 1) yes, that’s what preorder is. They can pre-order the book up to the point it goes live. They won’t have the book delivered until it goes live. So essentially they’re buying it beforehand. 2) We have a few books up for pre-order at the moment. Go check out Hitching the Cowboy by Kennedy Fox. Where you’d typically buy, it says pre-order and the button is light blue. When you order it, it tells you it’s a preorder and sends each customer an email as to when it will be delivered. Hopefully this helps! ❤️

Like pre-schedule the preorder to begin? I don’t think that’s possible. If you want the preorder to be up on all the platforms starting in January that’s when you’d submit the preorder. What you set your release date to is when the book will go live.

Hey! You can publish it everywhere but if you want to use a service, it’d be something like draft2digitial! If you’re enrolled in Kindle Unlimited, Amazon gets exclusivity the moment it goes live on that platform, but if you’re not KU, you can keep it on all platforms. Hopefully that helps.

It’s when your books are available on sites such as kobo, Barnes, Google Play, and Apple Books. You’re not exclusive to Amazon. :) Hopefully that helps!
