Great video! Another thing to consider is image "noise". For the same lighted shot, 24FPS @ 1/48 shutter with 100 ISO will be a super clean image. Under the same light at 60 FPS, you'll have to increase ISO to 200, 400, maybe more to make up for the 1/120 shutter capturing less light per frame. Higher ISO means more image noise. It all boils down to your rule of thumb at the end of the video. Shoot at 24 FPS when you KNOW you won't need slow motion (interviews, etc). Shoot at 60 FPS or higher when you KNOW you'll need slow motion clips.

@stopandplaythisreel

I do that all the time. Best solution because the motion blur we're used to is at real speed and nobody has the expectation of what slow motion should look like. I shoot high end car commercials like this and nobody has ever complained. The idea that it ruins the footage is ridiculous.

The other thing you didn't mention is that the less frames per second, the more data per frame at a given bitrate. So the image quality shot at 24fps 100mbit will be better than the image quality shot at 60fps 100mbit. Bitrate should be measured in mbits/frame rather than mbits/sec when it comes to determining quality.

@@carlosmarco01 when it comes to capture, as high as the camera will allow. When it comes to encoding for publishing, as high as you can get away with. There's no singular number to answer that as there are multiple factors such as screen resolution, output platform (HDR vs SDR), and mostly content (fast moving vs slow, grainy vs smooth) etc. Just go for the high option when using high framerates.

It also doesn't even display properly on most screens developed today. Afterall, tradition is merely the dead's way to peer-pressuring the living.

Thanks, Great Video I shoot adult content for clients and they want 60fps even when the action does not call for it. I prefer 24fps (23.97) most of the time but rarely shoot in 24p anymore, I miss my old HVX200a, the 720p at 24 was fantastic (I used to set the color profile to a non realistic vibrant color setting) which my clients liked. Now I set color profiles to whatever the camera can best do for color grading in post. I now deliver files mostly at 1080p 60fps and funny thing is I rarely get requests for 4K but do for 60 all the time. My only 4k content is with VR. 60fps and as much pixels as possible is crucial for VR, I deliver VR at "180 4k 3D 60fps" or "360 mono 4k 60fps" Of course I will transition to non VR 4K soon and when I do it will be at 60fps of course.

This was such a straight to the point and clear answer to that question! 1. The shutter speed that you shot something on doesn't change when you put it in the 24 fps timeline 2. Shoot things where there will be audio in 24 fps because if it's shot in 60 fps, and put in the timeline, things might not match up perfectly anymore. Awesome take aways!

Frame rate can have a noticeable effect on the perceived smoothness of slow camera panning shots. The slower the frame rate, the choppier the pan will look, and there's a hidden pitfall those who shoot in 24 fps often encounter. Most monitors and TV's refresh their image at 60 Hz. Since 24 fps does not divide evenly into 60, that 24 fps footage produces an uneven refresh rate when displayed at 60 Hz, which can make slow pans look ragged. To produce the smoothest pans for display on 60 Hz monitors, the best camera frame rates are 60 fps and 30 fps. As for the 180-degree shutter rule, this attempt to mimic the revolving shutter of vintage film cameras often fails to produce the desired cinematic effect in digital video cameras. That's because the rolling shutter effect of digital cameras smears the temporal edge of the electronic shutter, even when the camera is stationary. What's even more noticeable about shutter speed is the amount of motion blur it produces, which is determined solely by the numerical shutter duration, not the shutter angle. A natural amount of motion blur is produced by a shutter speed of 1/60th to 1/48th second. Consequently, when shooting at 60 fps for a 60 fps timeline, a 1/60th sec shutter speed produces smoother motion blur than the 1/120th sec shutter speed you would get from using the 180-degree shutter rule.

I just shoot at 50 fps with a 1/50 shutter, that way if you drop half the frames the normal speed results look correct and if you slow the footage to half speed it will still be correct as the viewer will be seeing 24 fps with a 1/50 shutter. People have become obsessed with sticking to shooting with 180 degree shutter when shooting off speed but In my mind the 180 degree shutter should apply to final delivery speed not recording speed. If you're delivering at 60 fps then thats when it should be 1/120.

If you're gonna shoot mostly in-doors with poorly lit conditions, instead of getting the Canon adaptor for EF lenses, go for the "Viltrox SpeedBooster" which will effectively give you more natural brightness since you're using all the Fullframe area rather than simply cropping it down because of the APS-C sensor. There's literally a dozen or even more videos about this awesome adaptor. My only downside is that I can't use EF-S lenses... only EF (fullframe).

What you said definitely makes sense. But nobody else is mentioning the fact that 60 frames don't divide evenly by 24? If you put a 60fps video on a 24fps timeline it'll look wrong in motion in any case, because it can't evenly distribute those 60 source frames onto 24 timeline frames. For example, with 60 to 30, the timeline just drops every other frame, but with 24 you have a ratio of 2.5:1 so it's basically dropping two frames any other time.

Hello Danny. 30 is half of 60, therefore more compatible, no? Shouldn't the question be "Should you shoot 30fps or 60fps?" Wouldn't 30/60 relation make more sense for audio sync, render or for deciding for slow later in post? Thanks.
@getfmlr
@getfmlr 4 жыл бұрын
Its not about compatibility as much as the filmic look. 24fps and 48/50 shutter speed is the ideal frame rate for filmic quality. If you shoot at 60fps and slow down to 30fps you can only slow it down by half. Slowing down to 24fps gives you even slower motion. In the end it comes down to choices as almost all Television is shot at 30fps and almost all Movie films are shot at 24fps. Thats why you can sometimes tell when a movie is made for tv or theaters.

A question I’ve been looking to get answered for a while because I noticed that the 24fps timeline looks very fake and not natural with footage filmed at 60… like the man says, different frame rates for different scenes, you can’t stick rigidly to one all the time. Thanks for the video 👍🏼

I've always shot 24. But the reasons people give for it don't make sense. People always talk about how at 24, the motion blur matches what the human eye would see. But. I'm watching the content with my human eyes. So by that logic even if the content was 60fps, my eyes would naturally add that motion blur wouldn't it? Unless there's some science i don't understand, i think it's just a preference. And that's totally fine on its own haha

Hello, I'm doing simple walking tours with the Pocket 2 and doing it at 60fps to emulate bigger channels that advertise their videos with 4K60fps but i wondering if that actually makes sense?

I'm using a Dji osmo action and going to shoot a dance video, what is the best settings? On shooting the video, i'll be recording the music source straight from the speakers and on editing, i'll be using the music and incorporate it on the editing to have a better sound.

So in bright conditions, without ND filters, would 60fps be better to control light, you'd be using 1/120 shutter speed right? That has to be better than 24fps which would use only 1/50? How does it work when editing. If I have A roll at 24fps 1/50, and then B roll at 60fps 1/120, doesn't the timeline need to be one or the other? Sorry prolly nub question. :(

Maybe im just an amateur, but i like the 60 fps converted to 24 better than original 24 fps. Anyway, good stuff.

shiiiiit bro, that what i been trying to find out, like the diff., nobody did video bout that. great job. Also, would be dope if you explain the diff. between Log's, like for example on sony cameras, there are log2, log3, but better not to use log3 at night, because it has 6bit recording some type of shit i dont remember, but that would be very useful:) lol

Thanks man! Log formats are different for all cameras. clog3 is less aggressive than clog2 in canon for example. Its pretty much a way for the camera to capture as much of the highlights and shadows as possible so you can do what you want in post.

so isn't it a okay idea to just do 60fps , and make shutter speed somewhere in the middle around 90-100 ish? that way it will be in the middle for both worlds if ill make the video back to 24fps? that way if i slow motion to 24fps ill have a bit higher shutter speed and if i keep 60fps video ill have a bit lower shutter speed then necassery ?

Isn't it a feature in some softwares that ajust that frames that are missing or beeing skipped? Interpolation or something like that.

I wonder how soon we can shoot 240fps fully open shutter and get nice result in post when dropping to 24 and/or 60fps. It's dividable with 48fps, so combining 5 frames and dropping the next 5 should give identical result to 24fps with 180 degree shutter. (If the shutter is true 360 or 1/240 shutter.. if not there would be strobe lines in motion blur.)

If you want some b roll and you shoot that in 60 FPS, but your project is on a 24 FPS timeline... can you drop that 60 FPS footage into the 24 FPS timeline for editing??

Hey Danny, what if you're not 100% sure what clips will be in slow motion? Say you do film at 60fps and then think "ok this clip is stupid when slowed down, let's leave the normal speed". In that case there is no way to make it look cinematic?
