I started learning Python a few weeks ago. Loving it. Am brushing up on my calculus/linear algebra as well. I found practicing complex math problems helps me with programming. It’s been a fun journey so far!!

In my opinion, learning programming helps you think logically and develop your thoughts. Regarding the topic of whether AI will replace programming, it is similar to how people thought in the beginning of the calculator era, when they believed calculators would replace learning arithmetic.
@HitBoxMaster4 ай бұрын
I mean, they were right. Barely anyone nowadays knows how to do arithmetic by hand
@Carbon0004 ай бұрын
Yeah, knowing arithmetic is still very useful. Not learning it and relying on the calculator is a ridiculous idea

Yes , i want to improve my python, and yes Chatgpt/bard/Claude help me very often. I don't use AI to write the code instead of me,but sometimes to explain a error message, or to use the best syntax in one or two lines to do the thing i want. So , for me i use it more like a teacher or a 'collegue' time to time. In my job, i had to build new tools for data analysis. Before, everything was done with excel , and it takes hours and hours, and some collegues wrote tons of vba, unreadibles. So i wrote a 3000lines of codes from scratch, and i'm not a dev , just learn python during covid lockout. So, yes , we must learn python. And if tomorrow AI will be better to write code, it's important to have and understand the base, architecture of code, libs , and so on.. And now, i have to write some micro-python code for some gadget IOT with micro controllers (very cheap) at home .. Always continue to learn, this is the way

It is mostly true that AI is a lot of hype, however, it does already replace some jobs, and those are jobs where it can do really well because those areas ( like music or art ) are very deterministic. THhere are a couple of graphic designers that have lost their jobs to AI. They just feed to the model whatever they generated over the years, and then fire the actual people. And, yeah, the days of "can't generate fingers well" are already long gone. You can even get a local model like Fooocus and reiterate until you get rid of any imperfections. Here's the business model of the future Step1. Hire 30 people form India to generate some training data. ( why from India, I hear you ask. It's *much cheaper* and it's already happening in large companies like Amazon / Google ). Step2. Feed the training data to AI Step3 Profit Step4. Fire the 30 people Step5. More profit.

No one beat programming
@abcpsc4 ай бұрын
That metaphor was actually pretty bad tbh. Chess bots can easily beat the best human player in a fair game based on ELO rating. Human players are still valued, not because they are good, but simply because we value human achievements. Simply put, we value human chess players similar to how we value athletes. Traditionally programmers are valued solely on skills. Assuming everything else is equal, someone skillful, regardless if it is a human, hamster or bot, should always displace those who are less skillful programmers. Bot programmers nowadays do reasonably well in backend programming, and they are always improving. Some years later majority junior human backend programmers will likely be displaced. But that doesn't we shouldn't learn programming for a career. Human programmers will still be valued for signing off generated codes and writing prompts. These are basically parts of the duties of modern day software engineers.

The AI boom will crash hard... AS for learning Python well, why not? Someone will have to fix all the broken AI-generated code eventually... or just as a hobby. Just because there are cars and planes, does not mean I can't have fun riding my bike...

absolutely yes! BUT, but but but! You gotta learn another discipline too, such as language translation, so that you can switch worlds at a whim when one is better than another at a given time.

I'm only learning python as an interesting hobby ,😂 I tried AI and the experience was that AI made some simple and significant mistakes, and that was writing python examples of how to do simple stuff like reading CSV files and processing them. One thing AI lacks is imagination and that is an essential tool of any programmer.

I use AI to write code, specially since I have to unittest code that I didn't write. It's true it doesn't output the proper answer since it lacks lots of context but, nevertheless, it points to the good direction and it makes good guesses about what are the inputs or outputs of the functions/methods that need to be tested. At the end it creates a good starting point and saves a lot of time.

As things become more and more fake (or artificially generated), I believe people are going to start seeing the raise in options such as: "talk with a real human-being" or "hire a real human-being". Just like with artisanal products, they cost A LOT more, and they don't always look or taste better, but we associate a nice feeling with it. There are plenty of opportunities, and always will be, just have to be creative.

The real thread to programmers in the western world is not AI. Its India with its cheap workforce replacing you. No matter how good you are, they are just much cheaper. They are payed for 40h but have to work 48h. But you rarely get developers with 10+ years experience.

My grandpa told me that Python is an incomplete language, and just a scripting language; not a real programming language. He said some other things that are obviously wrong about getting a job with Python (you can obviously get a job that uses python) How is Python an incomplete language??? am i missing something??? You can use pointers, manage memory, do basically EVERYTHING. the standard library is so powerful especially along with the python api that literally anything is possible
@rantalbott69634 ай бұрын
There is a *vast* array of programming projects that is completely impossible to do in Python. Mostly ones that require getting the job done with limited CPU/memory resources. And there's a vast array of screws that you can't drive with a hammer. That doesn't make either Python or hammers "bad" or "incomplete" tools: they're each suited for a particular array of problems. Yes, you absolutely should learn at least some Python. You might never get paid for writing Python code. But if you're writing *any* code, you're going to need to do lots of searching, analyzing, and manipulating it. You'll need to make custom tools for particular jobs. And Python is a great platform for many of them.
