One thing that is actually pretty useful is that in Logic you can change the time signature in a track within a song. Can't do that in GB and it can be decisive if such an occurrence would emerge.

The one thing I've heard that interests me about Logic is the ability to change time signatures within songs. Switching back between 4/4 and 3/4 or jumping from 2/4 to 7/8 mid-song is something I'm experimenting with and is not possible in GarageBand. If you want to explore this part of Logic Pro it would most definitely interest me. Thanks for all your breakdowns and vids. They help unravel and demystify all the stuff I don't really get.

Excellent video 👍 For guitar players, I'll add that you cannot re-amp in Garageband, but you can in Logic. I've been using GarageBand for years and always wanted the increased functionality in Logic, notably busses, track stacks, etc. but have been able to justify putting it off. This is largely because I primarily use guitar modeling plugins, which allows me to always have a clean DI that I can easily change sounds on. Having recently picked up a Fractal (and some real amps), the ability to re-amp is what made me finally upgrade.

I upgraded to Logic Pro x a few months ago when i got my new Imac. I'm finding it a bit more convenient, utilising track stacks for my guitars with multiple signals is very handy. It does seem like there is a lot of untapped potential for me to learn how to use after watching this :) I also wanted to have the option for different time signatures within songs that GarageBand can't do... Great video! I will eventually upgrade to logic. After 2 years of learning how to record, mix, and master, I see how important it may be to learn in Garageband before making the change. It has taken me a long time to learn and allow all this to sink in. Also, it might be little overwhelming to learn in Logic. For me, I see the importance of putting my first album together in GB before moving on. I am almost there!

I'm getting incredible sonic results out of GB and I understand it well I am happy with it .The only downside with GB with some of my songs is keeping the bass guitar notes more even besides using compression, I edit them within say 5 notches of volume to make t more consistent. The other thing I dislike is I wish you could drag around guitar parts in MIDI format to tidy and align them? Great explanation Colin now I know I don't need to upgrade to Logic ...yet! 👍

GREAT video!! The only reason i would consider switching to Logic (i'm a songwriter, NOT a performer) is for the integrated Flex Pitch feature... I'm not the greatest singer, and my pitch isn't always 'on point'... and the fact that it's integrated into the software is a bonus (updates included). I have Waves Tune, but it's not the greatest (get what you pay for) and i'm not a fan of the new Waves pay protocol.. before i went with all Apple, i used Mixcraft for PC that includes Antares Auto Tune, which IMO, is one of the best Auto Tunes out there... again, love your videos and thank you for all you do...

Thanks Colin. I’ve been on the fence for a while. My three questions: 1. Is it available on PC (I’m setting up a dedicated recording new space and a new computer will we required and laptops tend to be cheaper than MacBooks) 2. Can I import my GarageBand projects into Logic without losing too much? (Could you do a short video on this if it’s specialised) 3. Is the drum tool similar to the GB drummer tool in creating tracks, rhythms and fills, etc. I’d love to see a video of that too. Thanks for your GB videos. They helped me release my first album and am well on the way to my second, which is much better as a result. (‘Making drums sound real’ was a game changer!!)

Another great video. Since watching your videos my recordings have become much better. Starting to do some static mixing on a few songs. A question that I do have is on the volume of my Mac. I'm monitoring through JBL powered speakers. I usually keep the volume on my Mac at 7. Would you recommend bringing the level of my computer all the way up while going through the monitors that are turned all the way up?

Hard to say without hearing it. You want to mix at a conservative volume (not too quiet, not too loud), so all the way up on both sounds like it would be a little loud to me. But again- hard to say without hearing!

Awesome video, thanks for that! I’m brand new to recording my demos and I’m using garage band with some midi drum samples I purchased. My problem is there’s hundreds of drum files in various folders and no way to audition them before putting them into my song. So I have to manually open the “fills” folder and look through all these files and drag them in one by one until I find one that works. As you can imagine it’s very time consuming. Does Logic Pro let you audition these files? Thanks so much!

@@TheBandGuide I want to buy Logic Pro X now because I'm afraid that Apple can change the sale method to subscriptions only from version 11. (Logic for iPad is subscription only). On the other hand version 10 is already 7 years old and it would be a pitty to pay an upgrade from 10 to 11, when 11 is practically around the corner.

Good morning Colin, you are pure gold! I have changed my music production workflow recently. I have shifted my studio from a place nearby to a distant village where my friend musician dwells. He works in Logic Pro. In my home studio, I have a Rode mike and a Focusrite sound card and I plan to sing out my rough vocals at home with the help of another musician to give me the key/scale /tempo for the songs, recording being done in GarageBand. I plan to share the GB project with my village studio musician who can open the project in Logic. I have asked him to prepare a rough track and send me the same. With the help of this rough track, I want to sing the final vocal takes at home in GarageBand, do the necessary editing of the vocals myself, and share the GB project to the village studio for final mixing and mastering. Is this workflow a good one? Can you or others please help me in this matter of getting things right? Regards. Take care.
@TheBandGuide
@TheBandGuide Жыл бұрын
Goodmorning, Dr. Somanna! The one issue you might run into is that you will not be able to open his Logic session in GB. You can open a GB session in Logic, but not the other way around. I would follow that workflow but have him send you a mix of the song with the vocals muted (just as an mp3 or wav file) that you put in GB and sing over. Then you send him the GB session. He then imports the new vocal tracks using the import data function (like I mention in this video) into the original, mixed session and mixes them in.
@garudasomanna

@@TheBandGuide Thank you Colin for this swift reply. I am aware that Logic Pro projects can't be opened in GB. The rough track I want from the musician is as mp3 file. and not the LP project, Over here, the rough track means only the rough music track without the vocals. Guess my plan of action is workable according to your reply😃.

Wow! I'm shocked at the fact you did not include a MAJOR advantage to Logic which, to me at least, is FAR higher in importance than anything you mentioned and that is Logic does not limit your creativeness in a song. With Garageband, you MUST decide what time signature your song is in and keep to it. You cannot change time signature within a song so you are entirely limited and Garageband DOES hold you back creatively. That is such a HUGE point for Logic and why I want to upgrade to it - JUST even for that ability.

@@Theactivepsychos I'm all for workarounds. What is it?
@Theactivepsychos
@Theactivepsychos Жыл бұрын
@@markwelsh9068 it’s all depends what the end goal is. You can have a different project for each time signature and once you’re happy with them you can bounce each track (or extract out the frozen tracks from the project folder) and then import them into a new project to refine and finish the mix. You’d need to mark up where each time signature starts/ends and then be creative in your plug-in use. This is the digital version of how bands like the Beatles had to work when they only had access to 4 track machines. I do this sort of thing anyway as I’m too easily enticed backwards in my mixes where if I have the tracks locked in as sound field I’m less likely (although I can go back and edit the origins GB project and re-export) to try and fix stuff that way. The other beauty of doing this is you save so much CPU bandwidth. Obviously if there are time signature dependent effects you need to utilise you’ll have to get even more involved and flick back and forth between the project saving your plug-in chains so you can easily import them into other projects.
@Theactivepsychos
@Theactivepsychos Жыл бұрын
@@markwelsh9068 I just had another idea. I’m not at my computer to check but try this. Set a drummer track in the time signature you want and then once it’s correct to how you want it lock it then change the time signature and start a new drum track lock that and continue for all the drum parts. The only issue I see with this way is that you’ll have to make sure you have the correct time signature selected when you want to add plugins and only unlock the ones that match that time signature. If the first part of this works then it’s a decent workaround but if it doesn’t it’ll have to separate projects. I’ll keep thinking. There may also be other solutions.
