First of all wouldnt it be better for the router to be in the centre of the house instead of a cupboard under the stairs.Maybe would get better wifi from original router.
@Jayrod645 жыл бұрын
True, but this is also a realistic situation. People don't often think about where to place the new router. They will often place the new router where it's most convenient, which often is right next to the modem.

A better router can help internet speeds somewhat, as the hardware can handle higher speeds better, but it more so improves range. The modem/router combos that ISPs often rent out or give their customers are usually hot garbage, as they are poor WiFi range, overheat easily, etc. Even then, proper placement of the router is critical for the best performance. Placing it high up in the middle of the house helps the signal spread out evenly and effectively. Also, it's not just that 2.4 GHz connections can travel further than 5 GHz. It's that 5 GHz connections often can't travel through walls.

your testing broadband speeds via wifi not really testing full potential wifi bandwidth between devices, but the results on 2.4ghz v 5ghz highlights to users how deoendant 5ghz is on line of sight for big speeds not much penetration through walls on this model. and that 2.4Ghz goes further.

Part of the issue where you were checking both 2.4 and 5 at the same time is that you were doing them at the same time - when you are getting 60mb on one connection then you aren't going to get 60mb at the same time on the other as your total bandwidth is only 70mb - Realistically as well as doing both at the same time try doing one at a time on the TP link to compare the actual through put.
@Mymatevince7 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for the comments. Yes that would have been nice to see each one individually but I always struggle with the length of my videos as they end up too long and then no one watches!!! My thinking was that I wanted to see if the TP-Link Router handled both phone and laptop together better than the Virgin media router. You are right though as if I was to press the mobile one first then it would give the most bandwidth to that device so in hindsight maybe individual tests would have been better :-)

@topouzidd6 жыл бұрын
So, are the default settings using the device as a wireless router, or is it used as an access point? Since your BT box already has a router, the second device would better be set to Access Point function. But if the Archer has a better processor and much more memory to handle more packets and faster transmission, the archer should be used as a router, and not the crappy old BT box. But if we have two routers in the network, this could be confusing and bad, so the router inside the BT box should be disabled, but you ctually can't disable the router function from a modem/router device. What's the best way to resolve this?

I was forced to do the same with my Virgin hub 3 and Tp link ax6000 , I saw a vast improvement in range and speed. Virgin hardware is awful! Except I turned off the Virgin hub wifi because I think having 2 devices, so close generating EMF interference cannot be good for the performance of either one of your connections. Even if they are both using different channels there's always spill over. Like how in the early days of wifi, when someone turned on the microwave oven you would drop your WiFi connection or you'd see a sudden drop in your torrent download speed.

what advantage are upload speeds ? great vid by the way.
@Mymatevince7 жыл бұрын
One example would be when you upload a video to KZbin.....if you have a low speed then it will take an eternity to upload a 1080p or 4k video to KZbin. Most people need a faster download than upload so that is why service providers normally give better download speeds as generally you spend more time getting information from the web than placing information onto it.

@SkashTheKitsune7 жыл бұрын
if you are wondering why the speeds are so different from the laptop and phone it's simple... Phone has better WiFi antenna and phone also is using a native app rather than Internet Explorer... That's something to put into consideration, HOWEVER! This is a speed and range test between 2 different routers, not the 2 devices, the mobiles will always be better with mobile signals because it's what they are designed for, my phone would be better than yours because I have external WiFi antennas, my phone would also have better 3G and 4G coverage because it has external 3G and 4G antennas that are designed for it. The media hub is not the best because in reality... it has internal antennas and it doesn't have a grand selling point, they are given to customers to get them started and it's barely got the WiFi to keep the customers interested, it's like me selling you a car without bluetooth, 10 years ago it would be acceptable, but these days, any car over US$15,000 is expected to have it in some shape or form or else the car won't be sold as well as the others, even if it has heated seats and leather interior along with satnav... Customers see "WiFi" they accept it as good enough, where someone like you would probably go for Pro gear to get the best out of their network

Why don't you put the new router in a central point rather in a cupboard, you'd find the wireless more reliable and only use modem mode on VM? Technically you can't have two routers connected without setting up static routes.

This is a stupid test as you are paying Virgin Media £40 for 70Mbps down and 5Mbps upload speeds and with the TP-Link you got 50Mbps/5Mbps as it was near the other router. I pay £12 and get 5Mbps/0.5Mbps. I have changed modems/routers and it does not make any difference unless you pay your provider more money to up the speeds. That is why your test is not a true test as you said that your down is 70Mbps/ 5Mbps up. Do the test with the Virgin Media modem switched off? Also Virgin Media use fibre not the twisted pair(two wires) as most other companies use.
@JackSpank90494 жыл бұрын
i can't really understand what you are trying to get across. Now matter how much speed you're getting to your router, it will always be worse on the devices whether that will be wired or wireless. i.e, you can get your router syncing at 50mbps, yet it only shows 48mbps on a actual speed test. and the fact virgin uses fibre is the most obvious part of its service.
