Especially if you're new to the finer points of men's garments, the rise of trousers will likely not be your first consideration. The trouser rise is measured from waistband to waistband, through your crotch area.
Low-rise pants typically rest on or just above the hip bone, the medium rise pants usually go anywhere between the hip bones and the belly button, and a high-rise pair of pants or high waisted pair of pants, they're used interchangeably, reaches exactly at your natural waistline which is typically at the belly button.
So why does it matter what the length of a rise is, you might wonder. Well basically, the amount of fabric in the area between your crotch and your waistband has a huge impact on how the length of your legs versus your torso is perceived. A shorter rise makes it look like you have a longer torso and shorter legs. On the flip side, a high rise pair of pants makes it look like you have very long legs and a slightly shorter body.
The second reason your rise matters is when you wear a suit or a jacket with your pants, ideally, you never want the shirt to poke out underneath the buttoning point.
Also, if your shirt is invisible and you wear a longer tie, your tie pokes out from underneath your jacket and with the triangular shape pointing down, it accentuates your crotch even more which of course is bad.
If you follow us at the Gentleman's Gazette, you know we're big believers in classic men's style which often means that you avoid the extremes. In this case, you could argue that avoiding low-rise as well as high-rise pants will always keep you in solid middle ground.
Now one might assume that shorter gentlemen should always opt for low-rise pants but that is not the case. Basically when you wear a jacket and you look at it from a profile, the distance from the back of your collar to the end of your jacket should match the distance from the bottom of your jacket to the hem of your pants. Once you get that proportion right, you look at it in a mirror from the front, ideally without the jacket and you see where ideally you want that waistline to be.
If you're a little stronger in the waist area, a high-waisted pair of pants will help to cover up that extra body mass and nicely drape into your thighs. Meanwhile, low-rise pants would give you an overhang in the waist area, also known as a muffin top, of course, if you have a bigger belly, you have to take that into consideration and maybe let things out in the waist if you opt for high-rise pants.
In general, if you want to look contemporary, a tightly fitted pair of pants without pleats, a low rise, in a very snugly fitting blazer that is rather short is a look you wanna go for. However, if you look for a timeless style, maybe even something that is inspired by the Golden Age of menswear, then you should opt for a medium to high rise.
So what are good techniques or places to find trousers with the right rise for you?
If you truly want high rise pants, you likely will find them vintage, custom made or from small specialty retailers.
If you want to try a mid rise first, you could try classic brands such as Ralph Lauren maybe which often have a mid-rise pair of pants, they also often mention the rise on the detail section on their website. If you can't afford bespoke and you're not sure about vintage, you could also try this trick that Ethan Wong from Street x Sprezza is using, we interviewed him and he's a shorter gentleman who likes to wear high-rise pants, his trick is to buy pants that are two sizes larger than he is then he has the legs tapered taking the top of the waist in but it gives him a higher rise because larger sizes naturally will always have longer rises.

It‘s frustrating to see an formerly integral part of mens fashion being neglected by the industry. I really struggle finding affordable high rise pants and spend more time than I‘d like in thrift stores. It really suits my body type since I have a long torso and shorter legs. I don’t get why they are so popular in women’s clothing but not in mens. I actually tried women’s pants but they are too wide in the pelvis area. I hope they make a comeback in menswear.

I think sometimes it depends on the buttoning point of the suit jacket. I enjoy vintage suits only, simply because I can have the guarantee of a high rise on the trousers. Yet sometimes the rise is slighty higher than my belly button because the buttoning point on the single breasted jacket is high.

Where did you buy them? I’ve just received a pair of high waisted moleskin trousers from Darcy Clothing and they’re amazing. They’ll last longer than me lol. They feel fantastic. Button fly and I wear them with button on braces. They’re thick and warm so perfect for when winter comes around too. I’m going to get their 1950s pleated wide legged trousers next. Wide legged trousers feel fantastically comfortable. I know this because I have a pair of wide legged trousers by Canali, Milan. I also got a collarless shirt from Darcy, of equally brilliant quality that has a button hole at the back for attaching different style collars.

I discovered high rise trousers when I started doing WW2 reenactments. Fell in love with the look, and the comfort level and really wanted to find that in a more casual style that I can wear every day. I find myself constantly having to adjust low rise trousers, and find them very uncomfortable. Maybe I'll go for a mid rise. It seems easier to find. I'm also suspecting suspenders would be better for me too, because I never had to adjust my pants once during my reenacting time, but in my day to day with a belt I'm constantly having to. Thanks for the video!

One great thing about high-wasted trousers worn with shirt is that by putting pressure on the waistline it not only helps with keeping the shirt tucked in, but puts the weight of the shirt higher and makes the excess fabric shoot up and make the shirt more roomy at the top instead of making a muffin top. This can be great in broadening one's shoulders and just generally making the upper torso appear larger and more masculine, which works for a more informal, relaxed style. It's kind of like with pleated skirts, but (as it should) in reverse

Low-rise trousers are tremendously uncomfortable. I actually own some low-rise, but I rarely wear them. I like to adopt a style that is halfway between classic and casual, and I'm happy to have bought my Levi's Vintage model from the 40s. I am short-medium in stature, and of sturdy build, and wearing low-rise jeans my legs look even shorter than they really are. Some time ago I bought a Prince of Wales jacket and trousers suit, but I realized only after the purchase that the waist of the trousers was tremendously low. There and then I bought a larger size, believing that the problem was that. I only wore those trousers once, and now they're gathering dust in the closet. Unfortunately, high-waisted trousers are a rare item of clothing to find in the catalog of the big chains and I had to spend almost twice as much as a normal trousers to get them; however, those money were well spent: in addition to making the legs appear longer, they streamline the silhouette and are much more comfortable and allow wider and more agile movements, avoiding the terror of every man: the squeezing of "family jewels". After getting used to a similar model of trousers it's difficult to go back to the old type.

I’m older and have been fashionable since the early 80’s. I was wondering why high waisted and pleated pants went out of style about 15 years ago. I just came across a pleated high rise used slim Armani Exchange pants and they looked great and priced right. So bc of that, I wanted to do some research on high waisted pleated pants. I’m going ahead and going to buy them bc they are now harder to find, but the younger set still stay away from them bc of the old man image. But what many young folks don’t know is that not all wore clothes like geeks and were stylish back in the days.

I have always like wearing my pants high-rise style. It is more comfortable comparing to wearing a mid-rise and low-rise, personally. I feel like everytime i wear a low to mid-rise it makes me have a sort of feeling of it being very slippery and can fall off at any sudden movements of mine, the high-rise gives me that safety feelings and it contracts my belly in making my belly feel easier and more manuverable while the low-rise does the exact opposite

Don’t feel overdressed! Have fun and be yourself! As long as you’re doing it because you enjoy it and not because you want to put others down, then go for it! I was once a 12-year-old boy in England who wore suits and nice clothes everywhere! My old primary/secondary school didn’t have a tie as part of its uniform so guess what? I added one! The headmistress let me get away with as long as it was in school colours! Some people chuckled and thought it was silly but I’ve never let them dictate to me what I should do. Today I’m an adult and I still “overdress”! I still get chuckled at once in a while but honestly most people appreciate that I’m myself and that I dress well. What’s funny is that here in America where I now live, people assume I dress nicely “because I’m English”!

I prefer the look and feel of high rise pants. In my experience if you measure from the seam under the crotch to the top of the front of the pants a high rise pair of pants will yield 12 inches or more, mid rise is 11 inches and low rise 10 inches or less. The Classic cut of Jeans and Chinos at LL Bean are still high rise cut which is the only kind I purchase. They also have 7 belt loops versus 5 which is most common for most retailers and is another pet peeve of mine.

For me, low rise hits about below the hip bones, mid rise hits on the hips, and high rise on the navel. I love high rise as the hips for me hold up the waistband, no belt to cut you in two. By the way, I am custodian of a DB suit my Opa bought in the late '40s. It has no pleats, full cut, and cuffs. Also seen other images/illustrations showing the same.

I think trousers with a natural rise are always best because there is less movement at the waist, and your hips act as a natural barrier to keep them up. Plus I think a low rise can look awkward and disproportionate. With a full rise you get form and function.

Excuse me, but the way you measure rise is rather odd. There is front rise and back rise and they are supposed to be measured separately. Whether front or back, the rise is measured from the bottom of the waistband to the crotch seam. In modern fashion industry, in general, the standard front rise on most medium rise, "classic/traditional" fit pants is about 10 inches, when measured from the bottom of the waistband to the crotch seam. Needless to say, that the rise (or any other part of the garment) should be measured when the trousers are laid flat on a flat surface. That being said, long live the high rise! Thank God it seems to be coming back (at least in women's fashion), the cuts are also loosening. Long overdue! Great video overall!

I too have a long-ish body, and legs that are short in proportion - and now that I'm older and thicker around the middle, I need high-waisted trousers (pants, if you really, really must...). Because - they look better; they're far more comfortable; and the modern trend for low-rise trousers, and short-fitting jackets, makes an older man look ridiculous. (I think it makes most young men look ridiculous as well, but that's their problem.) The snag is, as you suggest, trying to actually buy these trousers: I've had to have my better quality ones made for me, which is expensive; but we do have a number of companies in the UK that do supply the cheaper, old-age pensioner end. So I can find comfortable trousers in corduroy; but if you want anything more formal, they tend to be available only in, ugh, polyester. An exception to this is the mid-budget Skopes range, provided you buy the 'classic' shape, not 'tailored', or even worse, 'slim fitting'. I hope the tide of fashion will turn one day, but in the meantime no one is going to get me into low-rise trousers: not even with a wrench.

Even though I prefer a mix of modern and classic elements, high waisted trousers are a must for me (but not too high or else it can look like you have a large gut). Getting my first pair of custom pleated trousers soon and I can't wait. Greatly put, Raphael!

I wear vintage clothing from the 1940s to 50s. So it's high rise for me. Although, Fred from 'I Love Lucy' wore his pants so high you'd think he was a zoot suiter.

I've recently started wearing trousers and chinos with medium to high waist, I feel odd wearing my older pairs now that sit a bit lower. Brilliant with braces and very comfy for a dad tummy

High waisted pants are always better for everyone, maybe not for more "plumpy" man. Low waisted pants, imo, are a cheap suits idea, i worked in polish "elegant" shops like Vistula or Bytom, and this is cheap suiting. After long time i work in bespoke/mtm boutique and we recommend high waisted pants for most of our clients. Weird thing is SuitSupply, they are sewing in Ceyadi and they got high waisted in the offer but SuSu dont want them.

I AM A BIG MAN WHO PREFERS VERY HIGH RISE DRESS SLACKS. IF NOT BESPOKE, I HAVE FOUND CONFORT IN THE WIDE LEG, DOUBLE-PLEATED, TIGLIO SLACK, WORN WITH BUTTON SUSPENDERS. THIS 100% WOOL, LINED TO THE KNEE SLACK IS EXTREMELY COMFORTABLE AND TRANSPORTS AN OUTFIT BACK TO MEN'S FASHIONS OF THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY.

Great points, Raphael. I much prefer medium and high rise trousers because they are more comfortable for me. I’m about 5 ft 7 with a 28 inch inseam. Can’t stand the tight-fitting low rise junk...

Thus video is great, Im certainly very glad to see this type of advice being delivered in such a well argued way However, on a more humorous note, with all the references to how to avoid drawing attention to ones crotch, I can't help but have the following thought: This video is, inadvertently, a perfect guide for how a gentleman of particular endowment can, in a subtle and subconscious way, draw attention to that fact. By breaking these recommendations, a crafty gentleman should be able to, shall we say, arouse impure thoughts, in whatever gender they find attractive. I personally think that ever so slightly too tight high-rise trousers and a just slightly too long tie would be a discreet but highly effective way to show of and potentially arouse interests.

I really like modern slim cuts, but the low rises typical of today can be uncomfortable and it's really easy to find yourself losing some dignity from behind when wearing a t-shirt (I know, this is the Gentleman's Gazette, but t-shirts are so easy to wear). I bought a repro 1960's Levi's with a slim-tapered fit (aka "modern") but has a medium-high rise. Great look and feel.

so if someone is tall and skinny, using the formula of (waist / 26) * 9 may give a rise of ~10 inches. using your genius mind raphael, do you think it there is any harmony in that formula? it compares horizontal vs vertical. a proper comparison should be vertical (height) vs vertical (rise).

Low rise pants make my torso look too long, and are impossible to wear with a waistcoat. This is unacceptable, as a waistcoat is an absolute must. The ladies go crazy for ‘em.

Raphael, I am 6 foot with a 29-30 inch inseam. I have a disproportionately long torso for my body. I’m also not on the slim side of the spectrum. My saving grace was full cut, high rise trousers, they’re much more flattering. They make my legs and torso appear more proportionate, but they’re also slimming. I’ve often got comments about how I’ve appeared to lose weight when I’m wearing high rise pants (even if I’ve gained some). One of my largest complaints about menswear now is how hard it is to find high rise and full cut trousers for a reasonable price.

I tend to wear high rise trousers all the time, but this is less a consideration of style, even though I strongly tend towards late interbellum stylistically, than a consideration of having to deal with a stoma right below the bellybutton on the lower abdomen. Makes it a lot easier to deal with that both "hiding" (not really but making it less noticable) and the use of suspenders since I practically have to utilize those because having pressure right on the stoma is kind of contraindicated ;). And yes, getting them id kind of abother, but there are some shops that actually deal with gentlemen's fashion from the interbellum and this covers it nicely. Thought it tends to be a bit pricey... -_- / ;) Best regards Raoul G. Kunz

Can a low contrast vest be a remedy to the visible shirt problem? It will always cover the bottom half of the shirt and the end of the tie, and do not break the flow of the suit, just like a high-rise pant. (If you do not have a high-rise pant of course.)

I’m fortunate that I can wear any rise pants. I always chose low or medium rise but lately I’ve been buying high waisted pants. I find them much more comfortable than the low rise pants. I think it’s the fact that they’re baggy and I don’t feel like I’m being stuffed into a sausage casing. I also like how pleated pants look. Very traditional and for a guy my age (74) that works very well.
