Shoulder Plane Unplugged

I was thinking about using the Veritas shoulder plane blade to build my own. Now I'm going to have to add the adjuster to the build. I happen to have couple adjusters as I replaced the standard adjusters with the fine adjuster on my planes. Brilliant job is all I can say! Inspiring!

That really means a lot to me and I would love to get back at it. I restructured my world to be around the saws and it has taken me away from everything as they are so labor intensive. Hopefully that will change. Thanks again.

Most of the "masters" have put a lot of time and effort into becoming "masters" and don't want to give all that knowledge away for free. I have my 10K hours in to be sure, but doubt I would ever be called a master, mainly because I do give it away and frankly don't care. It is about growing the craft and seeing what the rest of the world can do with the info. Hope my videos are helpful, mildly entertaining and make you want to woodwork.

Just the job. I’ve made one with a hammer adjustment, but found it unsatisfactory. The Lee Valley screw system is ideal. Time to make one, maybe not quite so fancy!

+justin dunne That's a tricky one. With me, I am socially clumsy to begin with and not big on self confidence, so to film myself took a lot of gumption, but I realized I had gotten to a place in my learning that I needed to share it. The first time you do it you will have 300 outtakes and maybe one good one, the next time it will go smoother and eventually you get to the point where you frankly don't give a darn and then you can just concentrate on what you are trying to get across. The way I see it we would know how the pyramids were made if someone had passed on the knowledge so it is our responsibility to pass on what we know. I have nothing against woodworking schools, if fact quite the opposite, but I do think there needs to be more knowledge given out about our craft. Drop me an email and we could chat more extensively. I love collabs! Love the editing! Nice plane. Its somewhere between steampunk and heavy metal. But you need to get a dustpan and a broom for handtool cleaning! Pet peeve: the proof of the pudding is in the eating. There is no proof in pudding, if there is, toss it, its gone bad. ;)

What angle did you bed the blade at? I was thinking of making one with a bed angle of 12 degrees like most Veritas bevel up planes.

I'm just wondering how you managed the screw to leverage the wedge in place? Did you tap the hickory and then use a normal screw?

The hickory is wedged in and then the screw tightens it down like you mentioned, holding the blade in place.

Wow, a lot of questions there. I don't remember off hand which parts I ordered. I think they sell them in kits now, but when I ordered the blade and adjuster had different sized indexing, so I had to turn the adjuster down a bit on my metal lathe. I noticed that you let the pieces of wood in the "light box". Well, in here (Eastern Europe) we/I don`t know the purpose of it. So then, from here ...the question.

The light box is used by green woodworkers quite often and though I don't do mach in the windsor chair work I find it is very useful for kiln drying small pieces. Green wood chair makers place the stretchers int the box and drill holes in the top. Place the turned legs in the holes with the tenons facing downwards to help dry the tenons before assembly. I use it for this once n a while, but most of the time I use it to make sure the pieces I am working with are at a constant moisture content as I live about 3 blocks form the ocean, it can get a bit humid here. Hope that helps explain it.

I checked out every book I could from my library, watched youtube and ordered the info I could afford. Now I have way too many books on woodworking and some of it has actually soaked in.
