Around 1960 there was Lassie or Fury or My Friend Flicka or Father Knows Best or Dennis the Menace before dinner. Then after the news we'd watch 57th Precinct or HongKong or The Untouchables or The Twilight Zone. Those were good times. There was also The Mickey Mouse Show or Disneyland earlier, of course. I watched Dennis the Menace when I was about that age, in Tampa. We moved to England, and he was on there, too, but billed as "Dennis the Pickle". I just read about the character in Beano named Dennis the Menace, so that explains the reason. I remember an episode, but not where we lived, where Mr. Wilson got a safe and worried about someone learning the combination. He was disturbed to overhear Dennis using the same numbers as a football count. "18, 25, 36, hike!" Funny how things stick in the mind.

I even had a rubber figurine of Dennis and Ruff which disappeared once I entered college. I grew up can without TV since I was overseas. I was in America in 1973-1974 and only then did I realize the show existed. He had a rough way to I with his mom working and his aunt became an insufferable tirent and gave him spanking after spanking when he didn't perform well. He was actually a well behaved kid I an surprised his I'll treatment didn't drive him to suicide! He is 70 now!

He was terribly abused by his step parents off screen. He loved being on screen because he could basically be himself. The rest of the time off screen he was relegated to what his "keepers" demanded. But they didn't loot what he earned, I'll give them credit for that.
@kerbaladventures24806 жыл бұрын
It wasn't his step parents, his mother worked so his aunt was his caretaker on the set. She would abuse him if any scene took more than 2 takes and he was forced to stay at her side the entire time on the set, and not allowed to socialize with the other kids. Never heard that he loved being on the set. I hope that's true because at least then he would have gotten some relief.

mr. wilson reminds me of a landlord my parent's rented an upstairs apartment from when i was 2-4 yrs old. normally i was well-behaved but that old man got po'd everytime i talked to him or like dennis , i'd ask him what he was doing. the old man hated kids.well in my own quiet way, i got back at him many ways, called him a mf sob(i didn't know what the words meant then) my daddy heard that and beat me for that one) and the finale was when i went into the landlord's garage, i opened a small can of paint and poured it on his new car, a 1957 ford custom. my daddy helped him clean that mess off his car, beat me again and we received a notice to vacate the apartment asap within 30 days. i was dennis in my own way back when.
