It's funny that this even happens at all. The problem came from Togamon using Needle Spray and accidently hitting the news helicopter, but to my knowledge at no point before this was Needle Spray something that couldn't be directed at one specific target. It never just fired all over the place before.

The way I read it, Digimon's core message was that a true friendship is based in honesty rather than kindness (The Beginning really hammers this point home). If love is basically a stronger form of friendship, it therefore stands to reason that the person who loves you the most is also your biggest critic. In any other show, the writers would have had Izzy too lovesick to question Mimi, but these guys subverted that trope in a way that perfectly fit the show's themes. I never cared about the ship, but I always loved this scene.
