If it ain't broke, keep fixing it till it is. It took me 30yrs to warm up to an Evo, but I finally bought a 97 WideGlide 6yrs ago to give my '72 ElectraGlide a break. The ElectraGlide is an ex cop bike I bought in 1980, and it has about a million miles on it, but it's never left me on the side of the road. The WideGlide just turned 42,000, and I've never had any majour problems with it either. You have a nice machine, and this was a good video. 👍

Still there’s something about a shovelhead that gets the juices flowing. Just the other day, my 81 FXS died going down the grade. While waiting for the tow, pulled apart the kill switch housing. Wires were making contact with the handlebars, back of the switch was cracked. $12 part.

Looking through your video and it feels just like home when I see this motor and the bike Have an FXS-80 Superglide 1979 with apehanger and matching numbers, bought it in -89. Motor and gearbox rebuilt, electronic ignition, new starter, all new electronics, new carb, new rear caliper and a lot of TLC, my spirits flying when I ride....Shovelhead is too much fun. Always use locktite on everything with threads 😃 Keep it, love it, ride it.

Bought my 1978 1/2 Superglide off the showroom floor in 1979. All that transitions stuff started in 78 1/2. They started with "pointless" ignition. Which a lot of guys took right off and put points. I ran mine for 12 years without a hiccup and went to a Dyna S. First thing I got rid of was the carb. The early Keihins were dogs and there as no adjustment unless you drilled out where the screw should have been. Early pollution control BS. I understand they can be made to run but I first put a Mikuni on. Then I went to a Zenith Bendix with adjustable main. Its still on there. I have the low stainless bars. They looked like shit the way Harley had them. But I rotated them down low like a board tracker. With my feet on the highway pegs and the bars just right I was perfectly comfortable. Its still mostly stock. Driveline is as it was built. About 50,000 miles. Those speedos never worked for too long. Most guys did top ends at around 40k because they came with leaded fuel valve guides. Which didnt hold up under no lead fuel. But I started putting Marvel Mystery oil in my gas. Shell smoke a bit on decell if its hot and you run her hard. But Ill run it until it really needs to come apart. A couple of years ago she was in a guys shop that was flooded. She sat under 7 feet of water for a day or 2. When I got her out of there I took a lot apart. I pumped WD 40 through everything for days. Poured it into the bottom end and kicked it through till it came out clean. Through the heads. Took the carb apart and cleaned it out. Dumped the tranny and filled it with motor oil. Pumped motor oil all through the engine. Down in the cylinders. So no shes sat 2 years all covered and filled with oil. I have a new Dyna ignition. A new starter and solenoid. Some other stuff. Plan on getting her running this summer. Going to pull the wheels and fork to probably change out the bearings. Swing arm bearings... Nothing has rusted or tarnished in any way that can bee seen. Im afraid for the wheel bearings and maybe even the wheels. Spoke wheels get water inside and can rust on the inside. Its been a great bike my entire adult life. I was 22 when I bought her...68 now. She spoke to my on that showroom floor... said take me home...Ill be good to you your whole life.... no lie. There was so many black Fat Bobs in the 70s and 80s you needed to personalize your a bit. Take those apes off and put a Lapera bare bones seat on yours here and mine looks exactly the same. Nobody added chrome crap in those days. We took that shit off. I could never sell her. Might give her to my son. Maybe when Im too old. They take a lot of involvement. Cant just ride. You need to adjust the carb a bit. Ive had to do wiring on the road. Not a bike for the gold card crowd.

A stock , or near stock, shovelhead is dependable if you can get the valve guides set up right and keep the pipes attached to the heads somehow. Load your shovel head up to about 2000 pounds and make it go eighty mph in the heat all day and you may be exceeding it's design expectations.

When you started walking down the road , my 1st thought (comedy) = "It ain't got no gas in it" (Carl from Slingblade voice) then recalled back when we used to have to walk or attempt to hitch hike to a payphone IF roadside repair wasn't possible...Out in BFE sometimes still have to walk to pick up a cell signal these days...> Took me a good while to warm up to Evo engine...esthetics = too billet-ee looking....Didn't care much for the look of the boxy "Ham Can" air filter housing of late 70's early '80's when they were first in production compared to the previous OEM oval ...

My two cents worth...... # 1 Honda CB550 #2 Honda CB 750 #3 Harley Davidson Sportster #4….1979 AMF HARLEY DAVIDSON FXEF SUPERGLIDE 74 CI SHOVELHEAD #5….At 68 Yrs I ride a 2006 Harley Davidson FLSTSCI Springer Softail 88 CI Twincam and without hesitation say that Shovel was the best bike I ever owned. Never leaked a drop of oil ( except the chain oiler) never had a mechanical problem but needed more than four gears. My best friend Donnie (RIP) and me hand carried that bike down to and back up from my basement. Tore it apart, sent parts out for chrome and paint, bolted on everything in the Drag Specialties catalogue. Won a trophy at a NYMRO bike show and rode the shit out of it with Paula. So sorry I sold it, such great memories. By the way you should know better than to chew whilst riding cause you'll swallow bugs and it'll make ya gassy!
