I’ve been watching Engel’s Coach Shop for quite a while. It’s unfortunate that he doesn’t have an apprentice in the shop to learn the trade. I call him a genius, I wished I lived close to him so I could volunteer my time just to learn from him. Take care and thanks for your channel.

Very innovative way to square cut those dowels using that 2X4 scrap. Nice! I'm sure you are aware that, not only does jeweling look great; it has functionality as well. Particularly in firearms. It helps hold the lubrication in a specific area. I like the Scotchbrite way better, as well. Good show.

YAAY on the Rikon! I suffer with sinusitis 24/7/365 and have a Honeywell HEPA and an old Lighting Air ozone generator in the bedroom. I run the HEPA every night and the ozone when things are rougher and the engine turned is BEAUTIFUL! And The Estwing can make a rasp in a pinch. Thanks, John CS! Better pack the Rikon up for the move!

That Rikon air filter is a nice unit, I especially like the timer feature. The downside to these is the pre-filter is an odd size so they gouge you for replacements. I’ve seen some guys make their own pre-filter using 1x2 wood frame, hardware cloth and bulk filter fabric. Cheers.

That was the first question I asked the guy! Are these filters common sized? =) I will look now.

Those farrier rasps are so handy in the shop. I’ve seen guys make some very cool looking knives out of those rasps as well. They’re so meaty and course. I should probably invest in one of those air filtration units. I’m sure my lungs are filling up fast with dirt and dust and rust as well. Great jeweling demo. The scotch brite has always been my favorite. You could add some cutting compound and use the scotch brite as well on the harder tool steels. Might show up a wee bit better.

In the shop years ago we used to put jeweling on all the tools and fixtures we made for oil retention to prevent surface rusting while stored on the shelf. I don't really know if it worked all that well, but it was quick to do and made the work look professional. I still do jeweling on tools I make in the home shop. That way five years later I know that it must have been made for something. Besides that you need to stamp your work with a description and date made so you'll have a clue as to what its for. Cheers from NC/USA

Jewelling My late friend Glenn was a master gunsmith. He would take a new box of ordinary pencils and cut off the eraser end to about two inches. Then would chuck it up on a drill press, eraser down, and using lapping compound he would proceed to jewel some very expensive guns. His guns would show off his mastery.

Loved it as usual I put “jeweling” on part of a hunting knife that went through a fire. It had pitting too deep to get all of it out. I free handed it so that it would not be in a pattern. It turned out really cool. Because of the crazy pattern your eyes could not see the pits. But now I have to try the straight pattern. Would a square or triangle make any difference? Love the vids keep up the good work. Oh, if you haven’t tried an ice skate file you have missed out. Soooooo wonderful on axes, knives, hatchets and removing stock
@ScoutCrafter4 жыл бұрын
Teresa- One tricky part of jeweling is getting the right pattern, the best way is on a milling machine or any machine with a moving table, then you just move the table with a hand wheel in a perfect line... I have seen ice skate file holders (cast iron) but not so much the files! I have to look into them!

That blade looks like one we used on a powered hacksaw to cut rail about 40 years ago. If it is it’s very hard and will break if it binds
@Aubreykun4 жыл бұрын
That saw blade looks like it's for a power hacksaw to me. If you're cutting corrugated roofing it should work great, not too sure about wood though. You could get away with using a bandsaw blade if you break it and drill some holes. In one of mrpete's videos (JEWELING Tips #469) he features his friend Palmer Moynihan showing another way to do the jeweling using sandblasting media and a pair of rulers, as well as mentioning doing it with a wire brush and other things. There's a company called Weiler selling some specialty banded wire and "nylox" abrasive brushes with that might work with that method. A lot of their wire brushes are really high quality and made in USA.

The teeth on this blade looks perfect for dry hardwood. Like Oak and other hardwoods. =)

@@ScoutCrafter Can't wait to see what you'll make of it. Power hacksaw blades aren't that common so I've never heard of someone doing it for a wood saw before. Regular hacksaws are a good option for fine cuts so it'll be interesting.
