Can you imagine a show of this level of taste, elegance, sophistication, and - shocking! - grown up adult romantic and sexual themes - being written today? The Dom Perignon of musicals high above much of what crosses the boards lately begging the questions "Where is style? Where is skill? Where is forethought? Where's discretion of the heart? Where's passion in the art? Where's craft?"

Great musical but you sound like a douche. There’s plenty of excellent work being created as we speak if you know where to look for it, and quite frankly it goes both ways. I’m sure if you were to look at the 1973 Broadway season you’d see plenty of absolute shit that nobody remembers in addition to this.

@Autostade67. YOUR level of sophistication, understanding of the complexity of the craft and artistry, your deep appreciation -- move me so much, especially now that he has gone. I thank you❣️

Glynis John was absolutely the best and her version is incomparable. Bernadette was great as well and her version is a good second best.

I’m confused. Was this the same production that Catherine Zeta Jones and Angela Lansbury were in?

Ok never mind. I just wikipedia’d it.

Bernadette is the best Desiree, hands down.
@richardmayora12894 жыл бұрын
Not even close. Judi Dench and Jean Simmons and Glynnis Johns were far superior. Lois Nettleton was also a fine Desiree and Sally Ann Howes was probably the best....a fine singer and actress. Peters is too American and not a good enough actress.

doesn't sound like any of you saw the original. Glynis Johns was magical. Couldn't sing much but "Send In the Clowns" doesn't need a voice. It needs an actress. And after all Sondheim wrote it for her.

I must agree/disagree, while Glynis was not a polished singer, she had a lovely natural voice and was extremely musical..

The song has been around 45 years and has given us many brilliant interpretations. Vulnerability seems to be the key, with a touch of bitterness.

Coming back to this video after a few years, am I the only one who feels the tempo for Send in the Clowns is a touch slow? Admittedly Bernadette's backphrasing makes it feel slower than it is, but it still feels quite sluggish.

Who was better, Bernadette or Catherine?

Bernadette seemed more wistful where Catherine seemed more angry, but quietly - I love both versions, but I must say I prefer Catherine's Desirée.

Thank you! I feel so alone in this. Don't get me wrong: I worship Bernadette in general, but Catherine was definitely the most Desiree of all of the Desirees I have seen! I've always pictured Desiree as being equal parts fire and vulnerability. She is a woman from the turn of the century, born to a wealthy family, expected to do the whole marriage and family thing but, instead, she seeks a career as an actress, despite her family's wishes. But that doesn't mean that part of her doesn't still want a family. It just... never had a time. She's now reached a point in life where she is realizing that maybe, just maybe, she focused a little TOO hard on her career and lost the chance for anything else. So, as much as she is proud of her accomplishments, she is also angry with herself for not seeing the train pulling from the station until it was "too late" to catch it, so to speak. And now it presents itself, plainly and clearly. There has to be a rollercoaster of emotions there - not just one sad emotion - and Catherine gets that!
