The people who keep harping on about how the parsec is a measure of distance really bother me, because it just shows that they don't actually know what the Kessel Run is. Allow me to explain: Kessel was a grim little planet renowned for its spice mines. Its system bordered a black hole cluster which was incredibly dangerous to navigate. As such, smugglers would have to give it a wide berth when transporting spice from Kessel, thereby adding huge distances to their journey. Han Solo, however, ventured closer to the Black Hole cluster than any other pilot, risking being drawn in by the gravitational pull in order to shorten the distance he needed to travel when running spice from Kessel.

It's a good story, and makes the term work. :) From what I hear though, it was originally based on a misconception; Han saying he "made the Kessel run in less than twelve parsecs" was meant to met with Obi-Wan giving him an odd look, indicating that Han was bullshitting to make himself sound impressive. The line wasn't meant to make sense. But then for whatever reason that particular nuance didn't make it into the film, so Han's claim has always been taken at face value in-universe. Hence the need for a creative explanation of the Kessel run. So you're right that there's an explanation for why it's measured in distance, but those who point out that a parsec is a measurement of distance aren't wrong about the fact that a mistake was made. :)

1) It's in the shooting script direction notes that this line is basically a line of BS Solo's trying to feed to the rubes, and Obi-Wan's not buying it; 2) Lucas was mashing up a lot of spacey words he'd heard to write the script. That's it. That's literally all there is to this line. Every fanon explanation for it is just a retcon because no one wants to accept that Lucas was just making stuff up.

At the end Mike said, “Fill your boots” when talking about the Mini Cheddars and it made me think about a teacher I had in elementary school who would keep snacks in her knee length boots. The old extended universe actually has an explanation for why the Kessel Run is measured in parsecs, albeit a poor one. Near Kessel (a planet) there is a black hole cluster (the Maw) - a sphere of independent black holes that are somehow stable and not merging into a single massive one and melting Kessel into irradiated space dust. The Kessel Run is a smuggling route used to get Spice (space cocaine) off planet without going through the Imperial's patrols, and it achieves this by skirting close enough to the black holes that the black holes interfere with that (whether it's sensor jamming or just "I'm not flying my star destroyer that close to that orb of gravity and death" is left unclear). The normal route curves around the Maw at a fairly safe altitude; faster ships can cut it a little closer because they've got enough power to resist more intense gravity. So the Falcon flying it at less than 12 parsecs suggests two things: his ship can generate a LOT of thrust, and he's more than slightly insane. It's worth mentioning that there is also an Imperial research lab that's working on a third Death Star as well as a starfighter sized ship that can survive a direct hit from a death star's superlaser and fires torpedoes that trigger supernovae when they hit stars. The Star Wars Legends stories have a lot of really weird stuff in them. The Jedi Academy trilogy is actually a pretty decent series, you just have to be willing to accept the weird physics breaking.

What we learned this weekend: Mike gets Ellened and Darth Jane gets a new apprentice in Ellen. I do think if it comes down to a light saber battle between Luke and Dark Side Ellen Luke would win, do to his uncanny ability to make Ellen laugh (although she could call in FLAMINGO, which would be a dastardly move...).
