I used acrylic paint and used Polycrylic to seal the paint and make them shiny.

I recently found a mint Perfect Playroom by accident in my grandmother's basement, likely meant to be a toy for my older half-sister but left downstairs and forgotten about for nearly thirty years. According to the price sticker on the cardback, it was originally a whopping eight USD, but had been knocked down to half that when it was purchased. If you can forgive me for pulling it out of the packaging, I noticed how much care went into the toy's engineering and presentation, even if it wasn't perfect. (Paint had been slightly misapplied in some spots, I suspect it might have been from later in that model's run.) They took care to even place a cardboard insert around the logo so as not to accidentally scratch the gold tampographing off the plastic with the cardback. I was so enamored by it that I took the liberty of getting all of Polly's measurements so as to potentially create new figurine models that could be 3D printed to be compatible with these old sets.

You can hunt them down on Ebay. Many sellers have individual pieces listed. Sometimes they're on Etsy too. I hope you find them!
