Have a friend that did this a year ago and it worked great. Not as easy as the video for a small woman to do but it worked. I laid slate tile so I had to really clean off each little tile to get the sticky epoxy out of the grooves. I could not mix in as much grout without it being way too thick and dry using the small batches. The thicker slate took a lot more grout mixture than the video. Luckily I had ordered extra resin and hardner. I did the shower floor in 4 parts because of cleaning grout time. Finally got it done and its looks very good.

I think using the epoxy grout is great to prevent cracking like you said, but also important that now water cannot penetrate thru the joints. If one were to simply re tile with regular grout, in time water would penetrate and have no where to go....with a new installation the water goes into the pan and if done correctly, into the drain weep holes. Now the only issue is your using a porous stone and if that sealer wears off, water will penetrate that and will have no where to go because of the membrane and tile underneath, so the question is, what could happen? Perhaps mold? Great job buddy

I have a shower that is leaking through the tiled floor into an adjacent room. I know it's the floor as I isolated the drain with plastic sheet to test and I have checked for other leak sites (downpipe, shower head etc). Would this method work for me? Thanks for a clear video and a nice list of materials.
@ceramictilepro4 жыл бұрын
If you have identified that the shower floor is leaking due to a failed waterproofing membrane of whatever type it is including hot mop, vinyl liner, etc, then it is recommended to remove complete shower top to bottom and start over. Using SGA to solve an underlying problem is considered a band aid repair because the root of the problem is not being addressed.

Would it be a good idea to place a Kerdi waterproof membrane over the base and below the thinset mortar or it is not necessary ? Thanks for your reply in advance.
@ceramictilepro3 жыл бұрын
it would be an option if you could roll the membrane up the walls high enough that it finishes a few inches above the top of the curb which is standard code in California in regards to waterproofing shower pans, but i don't see how that method is possible so just laying the membrane flat will allow water to get below the membrane at the shower floor perimeter. if you use porcelain tile and SGA, very little if any water will get below the surface of the tile so probably not necessary to use a membrane imo.
@x-creator44603 жыл бұрын
@@ceramictilepro Thank You for quick reply, and I would have to agree with others that your video on the subject is the best I have seen on KZbin. But I am still not sure whether porcelain tile and SGA will be 100% water-proof. And that's why I am considering adding kerdi membrane rolled up to 6" of the wall along perimeter of the base (and retile that strip of the wall), just to be sure that it is 100% water-proof.

@ceramictilepro6 жыл бұрын
that is highly unlikely to scratch the drain although not impossible. if you use gorilla strength and pressure, i'm sure it can be scratched. same concept as glass tile, i have used sanded grout vs unsanded on 1/3"' grout joints because it gives a fuller grout joint over unsanded. Our tile shower floor is incredibly uneven (somebody used self leveling concrete 🙄 what can I say that was pre-youtube) so we have puddling and leaking at the corner where there is missing grout. The level under the shower is crawl space which is good (I think but it is also why I didn’t realize it leaked until I was down there while the shower was in use) is it possible to use this method to even it out using this method to create the right slope? I know it would be best to rip it out but it’s not an option at the moment. Thanks in advance!
@ceramictilepro4 жыл бұрын
yes, you are right regarding a complete removal would be the professional direction. with that said and your comment on that not being an option at this point, you could apply thinset over the existing tile (make sure surface is free from all soap and shampoo residue, very important). use can use the thinset to create the proper slope with thin applications between coats to built at least 1/4" per foot of slope to drain. then follow the steps in this video to completion.

What a great video, thank you. One question - Why did you choose to use a 3/8 x 1/4 inch trowel on the tile? I'm doing my first tile job in the bathroom and I have ceramic mosaic tile that is 11 1/4 x 11 1/4, (tile mosaic pieces on the tile are 1 inch by 1 1/4 inches), and I was told by Home Depot to use a 3/16 x 5/32 V notch trowel. After seeing you use a different size I feel I was misinformed, was I? Also, what type of mortar did you use?
@ceramictilepro4 жыл бұрын
I used a larger trowel because i want to make sure and get maximum coverage on the backs of the tiles. v notch trowels are fine for super smooth and perfectly flat surfaces, i recommend a 1/4" x 1/4" square notch if it's new, my trowel has been used a lot so it is closer to what i'm recommending.

The problem area was really right around the drain, however some loose tile were found all the way out to the wall. Should I just pull out all the floor tiles and start over? Should I leave the sound ones and use a leveler to fill the empty spaces and then tile over the new "fill/old tile" substrate? Thanks,

Could I do this over a shower pan? If not, can I do just the walls around the pan, or would that make removing the pan impossible if I ever needed to replace it in the future?. Dis they make faucet extensions like the drain extension to use on faucets if re tiling the walls also? I'm guessing if you wanted to tile over tile in the kitchen that has curved slightly raised edges with bull nose tiles, you couldn't do it? or could you find a similar curved tile and place over old one? I always tell my customers in my tile business that a leaking shower is more involved than just cracked grout allowing water to get underneath the floor. Will Epoxy Bond fix this? Maybe, but we are still not getting to the root of the problem and that is the waterproofing material that has potentially started to fail allowing water to get outside of your shower! Don't forget to use the Prim Grip over existing tile before the thinset mortar build up.

Thank you!!! So it looks like this can go over any tile - builder grade square white tile? We are selling and after 8 years finally figured out what to do with our bathroom which only has subfloor! - Other than the shower.

yes you can tile over tile as it is an acceptable method. a clean surface that has been primed correctly works very well. The epoxy is an added plus

Who does this process/work want to have it done and how much is the cost

a licensed tile contractor. at least $750 labor currently

Rough up the old tile with a grinder. Use flex bond thin set to skin coat a new mortor bed. Raise the drain with adapter. Use polymer added thin set . Silicone caulk edges.
@ceramictilepro5 жыл бұрын
yes that method will work but it's too dusty. flex bond or any modified or fortified thinset works, just stay away from pre-mixed thinset especially in wet areas like a shower floor. Now about silicone and wet areas. We all know what happens when silicone or caulk, 100% silicone, acrylic or latex caulk and any equivalent is subject to moisture and water for extended periods of time. TNCA (tile counsel of north america) even says that "change of plane" (fancy word for corner) areas needs sealant like mentioned above. Such a huge disconnect between the tile installation vs tile restoration industry. Tile contractors rarely go back and see their work so they keep using those outdated standards with products that fail. I have 30 years in the tile industry and 7 of them are in tile/grout restoration so I see both sides. Shower floor perimeters and silicone or caulk or anything the TCNA recommends is nonsense and they choose to not update their recommendations which are just that, not the holy grail. Bottom line is to use the product for the job, and that would be our Super Grout Additve® hands down. Tile restoration professionals across the country use our product everyday and they coming back because it works, it's easy to use, and it's profitable.

Hello ceramic guy thanks for your great video and a nice job /I can share your video to others people

Very detailed video however I don't see how you corrected the issue of water gathering in the corners. Did you slope the thinset ever so slightly down and away from each corner?

Disregard. I downloaded all comments and see you've answered this on several comments already.

Nice clear job. Very impressive. I have a shower reno project requiring handicap access and wondering if the apoxy grout finish makes the tile less slip resistant? Any comments?
@ceramictilepro7 жыл бұрын
edward eiseman if your looking for a slip resistant shower floor, you may want to look into porcelain tile in a matte finish, stay away from consumer based topical sealers and anti slip stuff, they will peel in a short period of time, especially at a shower floor.
@edwardeiseman64667 жыл бұрын
Sound advice. I will keep away from sealers and go for matte finish. Again, I like the way you finished the flooring. thanks.

Question: Does it matter which you do first if you're going to tile over the walls and the floor? Do walls first then floor? Or it doesn't matter which is completed first?

Great video! Maybe a dumb question, but, would it make sense to apply waterproofing (like redgard) on top of the Eco Prime Grip before installing the new tile?
@ceramictilepro4 жыл бұрын
it wouldn't be necessary imo and if you were i would recommend contacting both companies to see if their products are compatible with each other. SGA and tile will keep 99% of water going below surface.

I am about to do my own shower pan shortly. One thing i am confused about is what is in the mixing bucket at 20:27? The stuff in there before the epoxy was added.
