To honor the late Isabella Blow, Daphne Guinness has set up a foundation to support aspiring art and fashion students and to facilitate further research into depression and mental health. Nick Knight speaks to Guinness about the objectives behind this and her Christie's auction taking place 27 June 2012, which will sell treasured pieces from her archive, including Alexander McQueen and Balenciaga.

I love Daphne's style yes! But I knew Isabella, and I find it a travesty in modern day and times that no one came to her aid in her time and need of depression, save for her husband Detmar, some family and very close friends, oh and some aspiring young fashion graduates who did'nt give a shit(the latter I was one of!) Godbless you Issy and I hope your soul has found peace in a World that could'nt give it to you...and Alexander for that matter.xx

Daphne is a true ambassador of fashion and she has been instrumental in developing many a career. Her foundation sounds incredible and is much needed. I do have a hard time listening to her beyond five minutes. Her manner of speech, intonation and accent is odd or maybe she just gets nervous?

Yeah sometimes when I get nervous (which is mostly all the time) I stutter a lot, and have a hard time processing the word. So it’s definitely hard to talk and make conversation.

This is the second interview I'm trying to watch with Daphne - love her perfume - but it's insufferable to me. I'm perhaps too continental, but the affectation, the tone of voice, the limited vocabulary - or whatever it is that makes her not so expressive verbally. I guess when your whole focus is clothes, that might happen. I'm on to Suzy Menkes - let's see whether that works. I expect improvement, lol.
@Loufi303
@Loufi303 8 жыл бұрын
Sofie Rheder sure, but you got to admit to the irony of a socialite without social skills no? lol Her perfume - developed for Comme des Garcons (and concocted by a reputable ' nose' ) - is glorious, I will concede. As for her other skills, i know Bernard Henri Levy has been enjoying them to no end. So there must be something to it! On a more serious note, I do expect any designer to be able to talk somewhat coherently and intelligently about their work.When I find if they can't, like Guinness, I feel NO incentive to explore. Probably my loss, but I'll take it. ;-)
@Loufi303
@Loufi303 8 жыл бұрын
+Sofie Rheder Daphne, coming from extreme privilege and wealth (the Guinness dynasty, lol), would be pretty insulated against criticism from 'the peasants'. I wouldn't worry about it. In general, with regard to regular people and artists, sure it's good to be considerate. But as we say in Dutch, high trees catch a lot of wind. In my experience artists are usually quite articulate, btw - and so they should be, as their core business is communicating their ideas and vision. With regard to women and criticism: surely they get a whole lot more flak for issues hardly or not relevant to their achievements than men.

+Damsel289 I'd really love to ask u sth if I may; in your opinion, a person's privileged upbringing sheilds them from, say, an articulation disorder, or any speech difficulty by default? I personally find it really cute that she comes off as having "a limited vocabulary", she speaks like every other person and gets criticized -if she were pompous & grandiloquent she'd be crucified too-no winning for her here. I have found that the people who really do "own" sth (be it a talent, a high education, a noble ancestry, money, power, extreme beauty, etc) rarely if at all do they have the need to flaunt & show off, that tendency is usually seen in self-aware, complex-suffering, attention-hungry, status-seeking "nouveau-riches" & social climbers, of which none i believe could be used to describe Daphne Guinness. What's really important though, is that the term "socialite" is one we'd use today when talking about Paris Hilton for instance, or Kim Kardashian- meaning a person who is famous for having money, wearing designer pieces, exhibiting a lavish lifestyle, & more often than not flaunting "outrageous" antics & notorious partying. I do not think Daphne Guinness, Isabella Blow and the such would endear the term for themselves, & frankly I too find it unfit.(👉being heavily used by the media certainly does not mean it's correct or appropriate or whatever!) She doesn't claim to be anything really & she is allowed to be shy or exclusive, or selective, or even picky, the way we all are. In the Fashion world she's celebrated by its most iconic & renowned people, and she's done (produced&directed ie) Award-nominated films, opera music renditions & various editorials photography & performance projects with amazing artist which are all considered to be "art-pieces". She doesnt party, doesn't provoke with her words or actions and people who know her tend to always comment how shy & down to earth & approachable she is. So i guess my question (finally! lol) would extend itself to sth like this: what irks u is that she doesn't fit the "super-wealthy-aristocratic-heiress" stereotype u have in mind due to her "affectionate mannerisms" & lack of eloquence, or her supposedly "trying-a-tad-too-hard" to achieve all that "not-fitting" to it ??? Thank you in advance ☺ [PS: artists do want & seemingly need to communicate their Art & message & all, but it's IN NO WAY mandatory to be equally gifted in verbal expression as they are in their chosen field! It's their Art they want to be expressed through, in fact it's exactly not being able to express oneself though speech sometimes that one resides to Art to get through, be it Poetry, Painting, Filming, Modelling Nude for S.Dali, and so on… 😶😏😉 ]
@Loufi303
@Loufi303 8 жыл бұрын
Anastazia R. Hi...that's quite an involved question..lol I find Guinness' initiative sympathetic. Keep in mind though that a socialite and 'super-wealthy-aristocratic-heiress' isn't worth her salt without at least ONE such foundation. People from extreme privilege, like Guinness, have automatic access to anything and everything, and their 'owning' something is a consequence not so much of talent or effort but of the ample, endless chances and opportunities in their way. Of course they don't need to flaunt of show off (although they do): they're beyond that. It doesn't speak in their favor, as you seem to think? It just speaks of their extreme privilege. They will be paid respect and attention as a matter of course. This mumbling she does, is exactly an expression (and known marker) of privilege: she doesn't need to speak up or be articulate - people will exert themselves to exhaustion to understand her and to listen to her. Guinness IS a socialite in the traditional sense: someone who has no need to earn a living, work is a 'hobby' a way to 'express' herself. She fits the 'super-wealthy-aristocratic-heiress' to a tee, in my book, exactly because of the affectation, lack of eloquence, soft-spokenness and phony 'eccentricity'. Nice mention of Dali ;-)
