One of the applications which customers use our hammer mills for is data destruction with hard drives. We ran a test to show the amount of drives which can be destroyed per minute, both for desktop and laptop drives. This test was performed in a 16" x 12" hammer mill. These mills are USA built at our facility in Bellingham, WA, with AR400 steel and impact resistant manganese steel hammers.

Wish I had a shredder, but I got like 9 drives laying around. Can't really justify buying one of these in the UK. :)

Hmmm, is it me or wouldn't it be more efficient to throw them in a hopper of sorts rather than sticking them in by hand?

Some material latched itself to the inside of the hammer mill but since their was so much material flying around it knocked it all out.

Agree sell back to refurbish houses repairing what ever. This all looks interesting as an opportunity I messed around think of that PCan idea and found opening the drives was a big pain in the ass personally there such a thing to me as dollor per aggravation ratio that yea maybe some more creative ideas xpuld resolve but huh F it..

@@mbmmllc ya know hard drives have a lot of platinum group metals, silver and some gold. did you process the shredded material?
@jmonsted

You'll have to run that material with a smaller screen. The european standard EN 15713:2009 (which i'm sure has an american counterpart, since it's part of ISO 27001) specifies that data media must be in chunks no larger than 1", as far as i remember. A bent platter is nowhere near good enough.

From some one who works with computers I can tell you that will wit out the out the other two platters you have no hope in recovering any data.

From someone that destroys hard drives for a living, I can tell you that it is possible to recover data from any platter. Also the standard for commercial drives is 20mm strips, higher class is 6mm particles.

That's nearly clean metal shred and would probably just be magnetically separated before handing off to normal metal recycling.

We are not going to process these hard drives any further. This was just a test to see how quickly we could destroy the hard drives with a 1" slotted screen. For pricing please email us at info@mbmmllc.com

In most hard drives, there are some crazy strong magnets inside. Do you find that you have to clear those out often? They would likely clump together and stick to any metallic surface (or at least the magnet fragments would stick).
@mbmmllc
@mbmmllc 6 жыл бұрын
Some of the magnets get stuck to the side but the majority get pushed out with the other material.

Total data destruction? No, it's really not. I saw a bent-out-of-shape plate. A properly destroyed hard drive should never leave a plate. An adversary with the right equipment could read the whole thing.
@aaronenos4247
@aaronenos4247 7 жыл бұрын
Thats not true. After the platter is bent in such a way it is gone. The surface magnetic layer is shot and if you were to observe the bent platter you would see the ripples in striations in it. Also the machine is scratching and gauging. Not to mention in order for a hard drive to run the platter needs to be perfectly flat and spins at speeds of 5400-7200rpm between to very sensitive heads. Good luck with that. The NSA actually considers bent hard drives as destroyed as they certify hard drive bender for destruction. Those hard drives are perfectly destroyed.
@slicer2361
@slicer2361 7 жыл бұрын
People don't read data from a smashed hard drive by trying to spin it up. The extremely serious attackers read it with an electron microscope. The NSA certifies bent drives as destroyed only after they have been *magnetically degaussed*. If it still looks like a hard drive platter and it hasn't been either superheated or put through a powerful magnetic field, it's not destroyed.
@erikmyers3888
@erikmyers3888 3 жыл бұрын
@@slicer2361 99.999% of hard drives can be considered destroyed under these conditions. If your hard drive is a candidate for forensic reconstruction via electron microscope and $100,000 man-hours of painstaking analysis, you're not handing it off to joe shmoe for destruction in the first place. If you want a dozen hard drives completely obliterated you aren't looking to buy a hammer mill. That's for destroying 12,000 hard drives.
@bond1j89
@bond1j89 4 жыл бұрын
Just saying all you have to do to get rid of data on a hard drive is to open the cover. Or if you still want to use the drive just wipe it and over write it.
@madfer4
@madfer4 3 жыл бұрын
Opening the cover isn't enough. Yes it would cost millions, but it is still possible. Overwriting the data is also not enough, the magnetic field that was first placed on the drive, when overwritten, leaves a oh so slightly trace on the drive. So with the right, very sensitive equipment, you can recover overwritten data.
