Fun Fact: Nancy Allen first arrived on set when Paul Verhoeven was shooting the deliberately cheesy sitcom "It's Not My Problem" which appears on television screens throughout the film. Allen was initially horrified to think that she had signed on to make a film with an incompetent director. Movie Magic Fact: Most shots of Robocop and the police car show him getting out or preparing to get in. Peter Weller didn't fit into the police car in full costume. When he needed to be in the car, he wore the top part of the costume and sat in his underwear. To maintain the illusion that RoboCop wears the entire suit while inside a car, most shots show his robotic feet exiting first. Fast Thinking Fact: For the attempted rape scene, writer Edward Neumeier originally had RoboCop (Peter Weller) shoot past the victim's cheek, hitting and killing the rapist. While getting ready to shoot the scene as scripted, Paul Verhoeven noticed that Donna Keegan's legs were spread apart, giving him the idea to have RoboCop shoot between her legs and hit the rapist in the genitals. Neumeier loved the idea and that was how the scene was shot.

I love that you picked up on all the not-too-subtle messages from the director. His genius continues in TOTAL RECALL, BASIC INSTINCT, STARSHIP TROOPERS and the misunderstood SHOWGIRLS. I know he has other good movies, but those are the 4 I recommend. Oh and also HOLLOMAN... which you need to watch before SCARY MOVIE 2.

This is my favorite movie of all time. It has everything, action, drama, comedy, a good hero you root for, disgusting bad guys you hate, an interesting story, good music, good effects, it was ahead of its time. I think the movie does perfectly everything it wanted to do. It's not just "robot shooting and explosions", it's about greedy companies, what is being human, how Murphy gets turned into a "product" but he regains his humanity. The scene at the empty house is so sad!, it's heartbreaking, and it's amazing the actor managed to perform emotions and let us know how the character feels and what he is thinking without a word, just with movements. In general he did a great job considering he was most of the movie stuck in the robot armor with most of his face covered. The ending is great, the moment he is asked his name and he says "Murphy", it's like he recovered his humanity and identity, he's a person again, he's not a product anymore. And it's gradual, over the movie pay attention to his voice. He starts with fully robot voice and mannerisms, but as the movie progresses he sounds less like a robot and more like a normal human. By the time he removes his helmet he stops sounding like a robot, when he talks to the bad guy in the final battle or when he talks at OCP, his voice and way of talking is fully human. Obviously the city still is a mess, the evil corporation still owns the cops, it's a cyberpunk setting, the bad guys already won even before the events of the movie happened. Try "Starship Troopers" and "Total Recall" next. There are Robocop sequels but they are not very good. 2 has good ideas but is not as good, it's not as consistent in quality. 3 is just an horrible unwatchable mess, and the remake is the kind of movie OCP would make for PR and marketing reasons, it's the "robot shooting" generic action movie the original isn't.

Verhoeven's satire is always on point 👍 Corporate greed, police brutality, commercialism, and even the viewer's love of gore/carnage are all taken shots at in Robocop.

Also, notice that the ED-209 wasn't programmed to threaten a person pointing a gun at a civilian. It only activates when you point the gun at ED-209, showing that protecting the innocent isn't a priority.

Such an awesome Cyberpunk Sci Fi Action Adventure film! It won the Oscar for Best Sound Editing. Before Peter Weller was cast as RoboCop, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Armand Assante, Michael Ironside, Rutger Hauer, Sylvester Stallone, and Tom Berenger were considered for the role, until Weller was cast as Schwarzenegger and most of the other actors had large frames. Weller couldn't eat any solid food except for Yogurt, Ice cream and Oatmeal and even had a protein shake during his lunch period. It took the effects team 10 hours to get Weller in and out of the suit! They even put an air conditioner in the suit to prevent Weller from passing out. It was 110 degrees in Dallas Texas where they were filming. The stop motion animation effects were done by Oscar Winning VFX artist Phil Tippett whom did VFX work for Star Wars, JURASSIC PARK and Starship Troopers. The film was a box office success, making $60 million dollars against a $13 million dollar budget.

Glad to see you responded to this so favourably---it really is an all-timer. Just an extraordinary piece of work in every respect. One thing, re: the backup units not showing up at the steel mill. They repeatedly called for backup, and the dispatcher kept either giving them meaningless E.T.A.s or telling them that backup units were unavailable. This wasn't coincidence: In the preceding scene, Bob Morton told his boss that they'd moved prime candidates for the RoboCop program to other areas according to risk factor...which is likely why Murphy wound up getting transferred to that precinct in the first place. He even mentioned to another cop that OCP was "moving a lot of guys around". The lack of backup units could well simply be because of the out-of-control crime in that district...but it's just as likely that OCP engineered such circumstances to provide suitable casualties that can be used for the RoboCop program, as Morton suggested.

In Total Recall, his next movie, the director subverts the idea of product placement. The movie had in fact an happy ending, with Murphy regaining his humanity. They don't show Lewis after being shot, but Murphy did say they'll fix her, implying that her injuries were not fatal.

While I'm an unashamed fan of Paul Verhoeven much of the anti-corporate-ness was already in the script. His take on it was turning RoboCop into the tale of a modern Jesus Christ. Seriously, all of his movies are great. They can be enjoyed on their face, or they can be considered for their deeper meanings. One will never go wrong in watching a Verhoeven movie.

I also look at Clarence and his gang as another form of law enforcement since they were technically employed by OCP (by the second in charge Dick Jones) to enforcement of OCP's agenda for Mega City 1 just as the police on their payroll, they were no different despite being the "criminals". Also did you notice Murphy's memories of his marriage were altered from when he was dying and when he was walking through the house as Robocop? Like maybe his marriage wasn't so rock solid, and he was remembering an idolized version, and I always liked that he and Anne didn't have some romance, yet there was very much love there. Lately I've been re-evaluating what it means to be "in love" or someone being the "love of your life" as it doesn't have to be romantic, involve physical attraction or blood relation

@Shree Nation Hey, just returning the favor, you got me to look at Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom from a different and fascinating perspective with your review of it. Like I said in my original comment, there was always something a little off about Murphy's memories of his family life to me. I saw this movie when I was 10 back in 1990, and even then I noticed it all being weird. Why was their house in such disarray, photos burned, why was context only added to his memories after becoming a machine, while going through his house, an added contextual cue that faded away as he passed through his wife's face. Paul Verhoven is pretty good at unsaid clues in these movie's, that if you think about it recontexualizes parts of the story, or at the very least opens them up to reinterpretation. And not to spoil anything, the second movie doesn't really do much to follow up on any of this aspect of Murphy's marraige unfortunately, but it had a different director with Verhoven not being involved, so that's fine, what we do get in part 2 as far as his wife is concerned is fine, I guess, Lol

Somewhat disagree. The crooks were not employed to enforce OCP's agenda but rather Dick Jones (the Second in Charge) agenda. OCP's agenda would not include killing Bob Morton for example. The President of OCP wanted Crime GONE from Detroit - Delta City. Dick Jones was the one with the Criminal Connection. In all honesty I prefer it that way, I mean the President is not exactly a moral paragon (look at how he reacts to the "Glitch" at the start) but he is not an out and out evil character either. The President and OCP embody GRAY Evil (Corpo Evil) or just unfettered Capitalism , Dick Jones and Clarence embody BLACK - Evil ( Criminal Evil).

If that attracts you, I recommend his magnum opus “Starship Troopers”. You laughed about the ads in this movie - “Starship Troopers” brings that to another level. P.S.: Responding to your comment at 54:37: The humour is most clearly not unintentional. Verhoeven is a Dutch director known for his leftist views; on his visit to Hollywood, he could make movies that basically no one else could pull off, and he trusted the intelligence of the viewers to find out what the movie was about.

Peter Weller trained with a mime teacher for 6 months to invent movement for Robocop, but the suit was late so when they tried it on, none of it worked, it was so bulky and heavy Peter could barely move.. so last minute at the start of shooting... they had to start from scratch... it shut down shooting for a week. It was gonna be a very fluid, snakelike, breakdance kind of style. They had to slow it waaaay down and make those tight accent-stops to each movement.

You're right Shree about this movie and it's political message. Paul Verhoeven was born in Holland in 1938 and being a young boy during the Nazi occupation he saw first hand the horrors of fascism. His most famous American sci-fi/action movies from the 80s and 90s all had an under current about American society's flirtation with fascism through capitalism. In fact, right around the time his sci-fi epic "Starship Troopers" came out in the late 90s he said in an interview he saw little difference in the fascist society of Nazi Germany and the capitalistic society of modern-day America. Bold words, but I tend to agree as an American myself. The U.S. has never really been in danger of being overtaken by a leftist, socialist movement but slowly turning to the far right of the political spectrum and secretly embracing fascism.

In many of his movies Verhoeven does bitting social commentary. In Starship Troopers it's that a militaristic society will eventually turn fascist, and here it's extreme consumerism. Also, he is known for not shying away from either gore nor nudity and his movies are pretty violent, but there also a ton of dark humor as well. Others of his American movies worth the watch are Total Recall, Starship Troopers and Basic Instinct. Seriously, the scene where Robocop shoots the rapist in the nuts through the woman dress is super badass. Also, props to Ronnie Cox and Kurtwood Smith (the dad in That 70's Show) who do wonderfully sleazy and ruthless vilains while Miguel Ferrer does a wonderfully devious, coke sniffing protagonist. Peter Weller is great as Robocop.

“Robocop” came out during an interesting time in U.S. cinema. Hollywood started satirizing yuppies, consumerism, and corporate culture more explicitly during in movies like this one, “Gremlins 2,” “They Live,” “Die Hard,” “Secret of My Success,” “Bright Lights, Big City,” and “Wall Street,” among others. However, “Robocop” might have been the funnest ride. It took a non-American director to help bring this biting satire to life, someone outside the gates with a fresh perspective. As for the Essential Verhoeven, his only other films that are must-see to me are “Total Recall” (which also has some corporate satire) and “Basic Instinct.” “Starship Troopers” satirizes the military nicely, but as sci-fi, it’s Sy-fy Channel-caliber dreck, i.e., a bunch of model-turned-actor 20-somethings running around trying to look like adults.

The girl did not die. She is in the sequel. I got to know Nancy Allen just a bit in the eighties. Her career went nuts after Dressed to Kill or Blow Out or whatever. She took it all in rather sublimely, like a kid on an old-fashioned playground. Total Recall is a very good Verhoeven film.

They did call for backup but they were gonna be there in 15 minutes or so. He recognized him from the line "Dead or alive, you're coming with me" (which has become an iconic line today). To be fair, If I saw a real life cyborg as a kid I would think that would be freaking awesome too! 😃😉 This is one of my favorite movies, love it! Shree, you need to check out the trailer for the upcoming Robocop: Rouge City video game, it looks awesome & it has Peter Weller voicing Robocop himself! 😃 You need to watch Paul Verhoeven's Total Recall 🙂 Basic Instinct is a good movie & Starship Troopers has its moments. Also, ironically the secretary became Kurtwood Smith's (Clarence Boddicker) wife. The remake sucks, not worth watching, lame PG-13 piece of sh*t! The 2nd sequel still have some pretty cool gore moments & action, but it's not good. The problem is the script, which got heavily rewritten. The 3rd movie is ok, but it's very tame & not good either, in fact Peter Weller turned that movie down to be in David Cronenberg's Naked Lunch instead, which was a much better move & you should react to it, it's really good 🙂

Robocop is kind of how Europeans saw American at that time. A movie like Independence Day is how American sees it's self. I saw this in theatres aged 15. This was a big hit in the UK at the time. It is a reflection of future shock that the Republican party is going full OCP at the moment. The story does address more corporate mentality and emotional fallout in Robocop 2. Not as well executed but still worth a watch. Weller developed a full set of 'robo' movements for the character over months. 6 weeks before filming, the armour was scrapped in favour of the one we see in the movie, forcing him to re-work all the movements in a short time. Director said that he regretted doing that to Weller. It's a good movie that if you just want an action movie, it has it. If you look a little deeper it's insightful and cutting. 10/10

Great reaction. What this depicted was Murphy was a cop at heart he wanted to make the place safe for people. Nancy was a great female character she was strong and compassionate. She saw Robocop as he truly was a MAN, not a machine. Also, the computer didn't override him it just reminded him of deep down who is he when it said Uphold the law. Murphy still had free choice to kill. Murphy chose to let him live and remained a cop. Also, yes OCP bought the cops, but cops like Sergeant Read and Nancy were cops to the bone. The didn't give a crap about OCP. You will see more of Sergeant Read (who I loved as a character in these as he was good mentor to the other cops). Overall, this movie is about if man is mixed with machine do we treat them like hardware. As you saw Nancy didn't think so and that is how she got through to Murphy. She cared about him as a man.

Robocop... always stand in the shadow of the Terminator movies.. and unpopular opinion: I like Robocop way more. (Yes, even more than the still amazing Terminator sequel) Throughout the years, killer robots have dominated the silver screen AND other mediums such as comics, video games, novels, and even album covers. From Mechagodzilla and GUNDAM to more niche names like Cyrax and Fulgore, along with more pleasant androids like C-3PO and the URKEL BOT! Robots have entertained us, frightened us, and given us some of the best friggin’ action us human counterparts could ask for. But there is no doubt that the two most prolific robots that hardwired our imaginations are the unstoppable T-800 from the TERMINATOR franchise portrayed by the greatest action hero of all-time Arnold Schwarzenegger and the cybernetically-enhanced police officer ROBOCOP played by the fantastic Peter Weller. A lot of it is depressing, but seeing Murphy regain his humanity after this horrible struggle is very powerful stuff. Get goosebumps just thinking about that ending, amazing stuff.

You've got it right! Most of people will see Robocop as film about vengance and so on, but actually that film is about full out uncontrollable capitalism without any control from government. Film was made in Reagan era, and we all know about Reagan's administration policy about economics, that's where inspiration came. Also Verhoven was born in occupied Netherlands, he have seen many things. Also Robocop as 2 other classic Verhoven films don't have happy ending actually, the evil is still wins, egoistic, elitist and stratoctratic evil. The main character is actually just another kind of instrument of that evil. OCP does everything so police will be eradicated from the streets and more loyal servants (robots and cyborgs) will replace them, they even bought news, gangs and so on. The main target is total control of the city.

Regardless where the story takes place, they filmed it in Dallas, Texas. During the early bank robbery chase, you can see the distinctive Reunion Tower in the background (looks like a ball on a stick). I've driven the same road. That tall OCP office building is actually Dallas City Hall with a painting on top. The front of the building is really at a sharp angle like that, and so they didn't have to build a set for the front of the building when Robocop arrives for the final showdown. The blonde news anchor is Leeza Gibbons, who had a Dallas magazine show on WFAA-TV in the early 80's, but by the time this movie came out she was the face of a popular national show called Entertainment Tonight.

There are so many great things about this movie. I was 14 when it came out, and my grandfather took me to see it. He was into classic science fiction (Isaac Asimov, Poul Anderson, etc), and he HATED Robocop. Me? I couldn't get enough. It works on so many levels. It's a fantastic science fiction film, it's a great action movie, it's a tragic revenge story, and it's an absolutely hilarious satire.

Seeing the medical team trying to save Murphy through his eyes triggered my PTSD once. Back in 2015, I spent 7 months in hospital because of a bleed in my small bowel. I needed a unit or two of blood every other day for MONTHS. One night I fell asleep and I wake up thinking I had to sit on the throne, but I found I was way too weak to even sit up on my own, so I called for help and a bedside commode. I don't remember getting back into a normal position on the bed rather than my legs dangling uselessly over the ledge and the lights were still dim. Next thing I became aware of was I was screwing my eyes shut as I had been in so much pain and I thought I was having an accident on my bed, but no, it turned out to be ALL blood. It's horrifying to know exactly what is happening to you (dying) and not have anything you can do about it except trust those who are trying to save you. Once I was stable enough to be moved into the ICU, I asked the lead nurse of the Rapid Response Team that saved me how close I had been to dying. He was reluctant to answer but I convinced him to spill, and he said when my nurse had come into take my blood pressure, the machine failed to find one 4 times so they had to find it manually. He said when that happens, it could have gone either way, and had it not been for the fact that I had been playing tennis like a fanatic as I had when I was 19-21, which at 32 put me in the best shape of my life. My resting heart rate was 40. The nurse said had my heart stopped, they doubt I'd have been revived. I needed 7 units of whole blood, another 4 or blood products like platelets and the like. The first friend who came to visit me after I let everyone know what happened and I was alive was then and is still an EMT and when I told him what the nurse had told me about right on the edge, my EMT buddy confirmed it. I know it was PTSD as I had seen the movie several times and was never bothered by that scene... Well one day I was watching it again and out of nowhere, when seeing it through his eyes really brought back those memories I want to forget. It hit me like a Mack Truck. I broke down and cried and it almost felt like I was still back there fighting to stay alive. On a different note, This movie was an excellent satire. Robocop was also a Christ figure and he was murdered, and resurrected, and "walked" on water near the end after That 70s Drug Lord, flipped his car and shot Officer Lewis and had a ton of steel beams dropped on him.

Something maby people don't know about Robocop is that it was heavily inspired/influenced by the British comic book character Judge Dredd (started in 1977 and still going). Robocop even uses some of Dredd's phrases, such as "Your move creep", "Dead or alive, you're coming with me", "Stay out of trouble" and "Come quietly or there will be trouble". So far, the most "true" Judge Dredd movie is the 2012 "Dredd". The 1995 "Judge Dredd" has more of the comic's aesthetic, but lacks it's soul (quickly becoming a by-the-numbers Stallone movie).

Blade Runner originally came out in 1982 The Final Cut was released in 2007 This was approved by the director Ridley Scott as the definitive cut of the film. “Planet of the Apes” (1968) “Videodrome” (1983) “Gattaca” (1997) These are all brilliant science fiction films with volumes to say about society and humanity.

RoboCop is one of my top favorite films just because of the pacing, and perfectly executed storytelling. It's very rapid, and precise giving every bit of information as needed. No time is wasted, pure gratification. The follow up RoboCop sequels, remakes, and TV series weren't nearly at good as this. Not worth watching, in my opinion. Paul Verhoeven struggled to do anything as good as this. RoboCop remains to be one of the most satisfying revenge stories ever. It's over the top satire demonstrates all of the problems with corporations, and greed running everything for profit margin.

It's one of my favorite movies from the 80s. Being that I am an eighty's brat myself. I was 5 years old when this movie. The first came out in theaters and I saw it when I was 7. I thought it was just a cool movie. Because I'm into all fantasy stuff of science fiction and superheroes and comic books and things like that. So it worked for me as I got older and continued to watch this movie. I saw a lot of the themes from corporate greed to how they used news. And commercials as a means of distract in you. From the real problems, things like that. It's it really sends a really good message. Out of the 2 other sequels, they're not so good. Compared to the first, the second one is OK. The third one Peter Weller is not even robocop. In that 1 that 1 just became straight kinda garbage, there was a short live. TV series and there was also a cartoon series of robocop as for the remake. I will say this. It wasn't bad wasn't bad at all. What I love about the remake is they put more spotlight on how his family is dealing with his transition as a sidework. Then what they did in the original.

On Robocop: one of my favorite films of all time. I've seen it maybe 20 times and I've see every reaction to it i can find. The sequel is great. The remake isn't as bad as people say, but it should have been R, gory, slightly more dirty/satirical, or renamed. As pure scifi it's excellent but tackles slightly different issues. On Verhoven: all 3 of his famous scifi films are timeless masterpieces of scifi satire and excess. They're witty, cool, thoughtful and highly rewatchable. Starship troopers needs a remake though, because despite how strangly iconic the film is, Verhoven never read the source material and severely misrepresented the society Robert A Heinlein was describing from a limited unreliable narrator. Before the film was made it was a beloved scifi book written in the 50s and was often recommended reading in military academies because of the informed presentation of futuristic tactics and the personal growth of the main character as he faces horror and takes on responsibility for others and sheds his boyish naivite. Verhooven changed a lot, cast the main character (who was probably Latino in the source material) as a blonde blue eyed looking Aryan, and pumped up the fascist imagery and added certain details contrary to the more libertine society in the book (like needing a license to reproduce... made up). This future his oen hard anti fascist axe to grind, but heinlein wasn't advocating or lampooning such a fascist state, only the limits on voting and the extreme danger of military service are accurate. We know heinlein wasn't a fascist as he personally was highly socially liberal, and wrote Stranger in A Strange Land which was one of the key inspirations for the hippie lifestyle and philosophy. What I think confuses people is that Heinlein critiques an aspect of democracy as an inevitable western source of decadence and decay: and that's the wanton excess of the power to vote yourself whatever you want if it means the corrupt can buy off the public and trade circumspect problem solving for mob rule popularity and a quick buck. So they made voting accessible to all... so long as they sacrifice themselves for public service first. But it's not just a jingoistic war machine, in the book public service takes many forms, but the main character foolishly volunteers for the very worst because he doesn't understand what he's in for.... and it changes him forever.

Robocop is a banger as it's got a message but doesn't sacrifice being a badass action movie to tell it. It shows how impersonal and dehumanizeing corporations can be, how outmof control greed leads to tragic outcomes, and has a protagonist trying his best to be a good guy within a broken system. It doesn't tell you the solution because the director isn't so arrogant to think he knows what it is. Robocop himself is a tagic hero, a good cop, sacrificed to a broken system, brought back against his will and tring to retain and regain his lost humanity by doing the right thing while still stuck in the broken system. Someone mentioned Starship Troopers, this is a recommend but I'd be remiss if I didn't saynthe messages there are more complicated than a lot of people realize. On one hand it is very much is anti-war and reflects on the dehumanizing power of war Propaganda. But what a lot miss is it's also about people sacrificing to become soldiers and humanity face a foe that IS inhuman, IS single minded ad CAN'T be reasoned with and how War Propaganda lies about losses to promote a narrative of victory.

Hi Shree, I don't want to unsettle you, but many of these things (4:55) are already reality: SpaceX is doing the supply flights to the ISS, hospitals are private, more and more prisons in the U.S. belong to private companies and mercenaries working for states are nothing new either. Back in the 80s, the society as shown in "Robocop" was pure fiction, for me it's a vision. 10:24 They called for backup, but the HQ couldn't send it in proper time, so they walked in alone. 11:26 He's wearing a body armor, so the bullets didn't kill him instantly. But they still cause massive damage and pain. When Murphy got his hand shot, he's probably in shock. That's why he's not screaming at that moment. 12:08 Yes, you can survive a shot in the head, althought you wouldn't be the same after that. 21:26 Well, kind of. He's the former mayor 😉 47:00 As mentioned earlier in the movie, Murphy still got some organs left, so he needs to eat. An important aspect of Robocop is the lead-poisoning. Because of the leaded fuel, everyone in the 1980s was going crazy. Scientists theorise that this is what caused the huge spike in crime rate, school bullying, etc. Movies from that era are sort of unique, because they are like time-capsules.
