I do not see how this "feels sarcastic". It's honest praise with a few insights on modern day culture and the way it changes formerly established theories on popular culture. Furthermore, it reinforces the idea that the original Shrek is a great film, despite the meme culture surrounding it.

In the anime fight scene parody, there was a moment where Shrek looked at the cheering crowd and looked shocked at all the positive attention he received. You are right when you said the artists added additional emotional elements within the story that not only adds more weight to it, but it comes from a place of understanding and love from the original. Something remakes should do. Don't kill the past, understand and grow from it.

Shrek Retold is a project where the creative side of KZbin really shines and shows off their love for Shrek. Even when they turned a dramatic scene into a comedic scene, it still keeps in what makes the scene important to the story. Everyone involved with it has done an amazing job with their contributions. I really hope they get to do one for Shrek 2. It would be amazing to see their version of the climatic "I Need a Hero" scene.

At surface value, Shrek seems like a spite-fueled mockery of the Disney films of its time. Beneath that layer, though, is a story that still continues to resonate with generation after generation, immortalized by a diehard fanbase who aren't ashamed of their love for that big lovable ogre
@RedFloyd4695 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't even say it's like that on at surface value. It's a parody of fairy-tales and some tropes. I wouldn't call that "spite-fueled mockery".
@darkmyro Жыл бұрын
It's not surface lvl, just about every big name who had something to do with the original Shrek had some beef with Disney. Though I think good art can come from raw emotion, even is that emotion is anger. I think good comedy can come from that too. I think that's why it resonates. It's because it comes from a genuine place. I do think it's kinda telling the closest movie Disney has ever made to something like Shrek is wreck it Ralph though cause how similar, but how very different they are.

I actually met the guy behind this film, he is truly that passionate about Shrek and wants to spread that love with others. I have to say it was very interesting talking to him about Shrek as he recognized how much the memes have influenced how people see the film and franchise but he also sees that there are many others like him who just genuinely love the movie for what it is. I can wholeheartedly recommend checking out the channel he and his friends run as it holds a great deal of free form creativity and everything they put out is something they truly enjoyed making and that's something that is lacking lately on this platform. Thanks for making this video it reminded me of the time I met a man who openly loves something people regularly use for cheap laughs but doesn't care if you think it's dumb, because that shouldn't matter, all that matters is that its important to you and you alone.

I personally loved shrek retold. I thought that shrek becoming a meme just made the movie more enjoyable. It allowed me to enjoy the great movie and satirical breakdown of fairytale tropes while also enjoying the meme fodder, thus adding to the experience. Shrek retold adds further layers to this beautiful onion by 1.changing the context of scenes which creates a more interesting dual meaning to them 2. Adding more satirical breakdowns of other genres and mediums 3. Experimenting with often times amazingly well done different types of animation and film 4. More meme fodder 5. The heart that was put in to making this passion project a reality Honestly shrek and shrek retold are amazing and should be given more credit.

Your essay had several good points especially with the discussion on "ironic" enjoyment. There are plenty of pieces of mediocre media that are mostly memed. However, these same films/songs/books/games etc have a large following of people that not only enjoy them unironicaly, but are themselves inspired to act and create. So even if there seems to be a group consensus that x movie/song/book/game is overrated or just bad, if people are inspired by them to become creators themselves, then regardless of the flaws or vapidity of the original work, its artistic merit cannot be denied.

I realized something the other day about why Shrek Retold feels so beautiful and heartening. Shrek the original is about turning something sacred and beloved (i.e., Disney movies and fairy tales) into something intentionally stupid and crude (i.e., shitposting.) Shrek Retold is about turning something intentionally stupid and crude (the original Shrek) and treating it like something sacred and beloved. In short, Shrek the Movie is about turning myth and legend into shitpost. Shrek the Remake is about turning shitpost into myth and legend.

I like the connections you make between Shrek Retold and popular culture, especially at 5:40 where you explain the significance behind the use of Eddie Murphy's picture. When the whole sequence happened in the remake, I found myself going back to it. It was so well done and I actively looked out to find it afterwards. Also, some the animations in this retelling are AMAZING visually. To the point where I kind of wished that Shrek had been told in those styles instead of 3D. Like, for example, during the scene where Shrek and Donkey are heading to the castle and they're coming across the field of sunflowers. The animation for that segment is so cute and stylized, and I want to see more movies done in that simple, charming style.
