What happens to Styrofoam cups in the bottom of the ocean? We are going to try that out with our deep sea / high pressure chamber 10 000 000? Will the pressure shrink the cups? Will they stay small when they are returned to normal air pressure? Hydraulic Press Channel goes Mythbusters on this experiment.

I have a friend who is a marine biologist who studies the sea floor in the Monterey area. Before he goes to sea, he had a BBQ and invites everyone to decorate various Styrofoam items that he collects between excursions. He then takes them to sea with him, placing them in mesh bags and attaches the bags to his sample line. After he returns from sea, he has another bbq and invites everyone back to eat & get their Styrofoam art.

@@robinblackmoor8732 yup, did that on my first boat, we all signed one, and the LPO of our division (sonar) put the cup in a mesh bag, it started out 3 inches, we went all the way down "greater than 800 feet" and when we came back it was less than 2 inches. 🙂

Have you guys thought about trying to freeze water in something like a steel sealed vessel? I have read that this has been tried in things as thick as old canons and the freezing water still split the canon barrel open. I was thinking it would go along with the theme of your channel in that it’s on the topic of pressure. You might also be able to use it to crush things with more force than a hydraulic press.

Water expand when it freezes to ice. Ice is about 10% lighter than water, compared to volume. That means it expand about 10%. So if you forget a full bottle of water in the freezer, it will explode.

I would expect the following material dependence: Wether a soft foam material reinflates to the previous size or not, depends on how open-pored or closed-pore the material is. - If it is open-pored, the gas out of most pores will be somewhat compressed but then displaced by water. Since water is almost incompressible, it has the same volume at all pressures (if it does not freeze or evaporate). Therefore after release of the pressure, water keeps the same volume and thus the pores and the sample, too. Depending on the elasticity of the pore wall material, it might slowly reinflate again (elasting) or not (unelastic). - If the material is closed-pored, the gas will stay in the pores. It just compresses or deflates, depending on pressure. Thus the sample reinflates to the previous size. In case of hard (and thus likely inelastic) foam materials, even for closed-pore materials it probably won't return to previous size, because the pores break, when the material is compressed. It makes sense, that the shoe would be closed-pored and highly elastic, because you want to protect the pores from filling with dirt over time, and the shoes have to be elastic, to walk comfortably.

That lure is a 10 cm Rapala Husky Jerk if I'm not mistaken, and that one isn't meant to be a floating one. It's actually supposed to keep its depth when stationary, but in my experience that kind of lures sink ever so slowly. And yes, there is a hollow chamber inside with little rattling balls, but it is pretty small and thus probably won't give in in that kind of pressure. If you had some balsa lure instead of a plastic one, like Rapala Original, it could have given in to the pressure because balsa is a very soft wood. But even those have quite a strong layer of lacquer on them, so the pressure resistance could prove to be pretty surprising.

Test the imploding submarine issue! Supposedly, if a submarin implodes the crew will not be drowned but instead will be turned into ash as the air in the submarine is suddenly compressed so much and heats up so much that they burn up. To test this, put a small doll in a container that can withstand a kilometer of pressure before it implodes then expose it to much more than a kilometer of pressure so that it will implode. Once this container has imploded, open it up and see if the doll was burned or melted.

Cool! I wonder-- if you sealed the foil ball inside of a mylar or teflon bag? Heat sealing, I'd think, or a really solid clamping method, such that until the mylar or teflon skin failed, the pressure would be all on the foil ball (and trapped air, of course). I think you'd get some good compression on the foil itself. Then, keep going until the plastic skin fails, releasing all the air, but maintaining the pressure on the foil. Slow release, and you could possibly keep the foil small. I dunno. Or sudden release, and the foil explodes?

I have an idea for the foil ball: Seal it in something, like a bag, a balloon, or something. See if the external pressure of the bag (which I would try squeezing most of the air out of, but not crushing the ball) will do the trick. Would the introduction of a weaker pressure vessel surrounding it cause it to compress? Also- with the penguins- what about needle holes in them? A few holes that would go to the middle, but not all the way thru- would that relieve some of the internal pressure?
